Google removed the Google Pay Balance Card on June 22, 2026. If you still have money in a U.S. Google Pay balance, Google says you can transfer it to a linked bank account or debit card; the balance card can no longer be used for tap-to-pay purchases.
What Google Pay changed in 2021
In July 2021, Google introduced a virtual card linked to a user’s Google Pay balance. The feature was intended for eligible U.S. Android users, and its rollout was gradual. It gave users another way to use money they had received through Google Pay: the balance could be spent at stores accepting Google Pay contactless payments and online at merchants offering “Buy with Google Pay.” The original rollout was reported by Droid Life on July 8, 2021.

That card was a way to spend stored Google Pay funds, not a credit card and not a new bank-issued card number. It was distinct from an ordinary debit or credit card in Google Wallet, a Google Play balance, a stored gift card, and a virtual number issued for an existing bank card.
Why the old instructions no longer work
Google says it removed the virtual Google Pay Balance Card as a payment method on June 22, 2026. The change ended the card’s in-store and online payment function; it did not, according to Google, remove users’ access to money already held in their Google Pay balance. Old screenshots or instructions telling you to add the balance card and tap your phone at checkout describe the former feature, not a current payment method.

Google Wallet contactless payments still work with supported debit and credit cards, subject to card, country, device, and issuer compatibility. They require an NFC-enabled Android phone and a supported payment method. Those general Wallet requirements do not make the discontinued balance card usable again. See Google’s contactless-payment requirements and its tap-to-pay instructions.
How to transfer a remaining balance
Google’s current instructions direct users to transfer the balance out rather than spend it with the former card:

- Tap the balance profile button.
- Select Transfer out.
- If prompted, choose a linked bank account or debit card, then complete the transfer.
Labels can vary slightly with app version or account state. If you have no eligible destination linked, you may need to add or verify one before transferring. Google does not promise that every transfer method is available to every account, or that a transfer will be instant or fee-free; check the options and terms shown for your account. Google’s current help page says there is no stated deadline to withdraw remaining funds. It also says users currently cannot add money to Google Pay; see Google’s balance and transfer guidance and its information about adding money.

Google says the current available balance is visible in Google Wallet. For complete transaction history and downloadable monthly records, use the profile on the Google Pay website. Make sure you are signed in to the account that received or holds the funds; a different Google account can make a balance appear to be missing. Google’s balance help page explains where to view the balance, history, and statements.

Google Pay, Google Wallet, and similar-sounding balances
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Google Wallet | Google’s app for storing and using payment cards, passes, tickets, keys, IDs, and other digital items. See Google’s description of Wallet. |
| Google Pay | The payment service and checkout branding used for supported transactions. |
| Google Pay balance | A U.S.-only stored balance. The former virtual payment card was discontinued June 22, 2026, but Google says existing funds remain accessible and transferable. |
| Google Play balance | Credit for Google Play purchases, not general-purpose money for ordinary in-store purchases. |
| Bank-issued virtual card | A virtual number associated with an eligible debit or credit card, generally used for online or in-app purchases. It is separate from the old Google Pay Balance Card; Google says its virtual cards are tied to eligible underlying payment cards. See Google’s virtual-card information. |
If you cannot find the balance or transfer option
- The balance card is missing or a tap is declined: The balance card was discontinued, so adding it again, reinstalling the app, or changing NFC settings will not restore its payment function. Transfer the funds out instead.
- You cannot see a balance: Check that you are signed into the correct Google account and look in Google Wallet. A Google Play balance is separate and is not the Google Pay balance discussed here.
- “Transfer out” is unavailable: Confirm the account and balance are supported for this U.S.-specific feature and check whether a bank account or debit card needs to be linked or verified. If it remains unavailable, consult Google’s account-specific help rather than treating the balance card as a workaround.
- You are outside the United States: The original balance-card feature was U.S.-only; do not assume it applied to other countries.
