$1,400 stimulus check

Can You Still Claim the $1,400 2021 Stimulus Credit? What to Know

The advertised $1,400 was part of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, not a new payment. The ordinary deadline to claim it has passed.

No general $1,400 stimulus-check claim is currently open. The amount refers to the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, tied to the third Economic Impact Payment. The ordinary deadline to claim it by filing a 2021 federal tax return was April 15, 2025, and that date has passed. The IRS says it has issued all first, second and third Economic Impact Payments.

What the $1,400 amount referred to

The third Economic Impact Payment was an advance of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. People who received less than the amount for which they qualified could claim the difference on a 2021 federal income tax return; it was not a separate application for a new payment. The IRS describes the credit as up to $1,400 per eligible individual, plus up to $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, subject to eligibility rules and reduced by the third payment already received.

Those figures were maximums, not guaranteed payments. IRS examples published in 2022 included a maximum of $1,400 for a single taxpayer with no dependents and $5,600 for a joint return claiming two qualifying dependents. The amount for an individual depended on eligibility, dependents and prior payments. IRS: 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit — Topic A

Why the ordinary claim deadline has passed

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, the IRS required a 2021 tax return—even from people who otherwise did not have to file. IRS Publication 5486-A gave April 15, 2025, as the filing deadline for eligible people to claim the credit. That deadline has passed. The IRS program-status page says all three rounds of Economic Impact Payments have been issued and points people with missing amounts to the relevant 2020 or 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit information.

Accordingly, filing now should not be presented as a way to obtain this credit. The cited IRS guidance does not resolve whether an unusual individual circumstance, such as a disaster-related postponement or a prior filing, affects a particular limitation period. For a case-specific question, check current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional; that is not evidence that a general claim window remains open. Who could qualify under the 2021 rules

These were historical rules for the 2021 credit, not eligibility criteria for a new payment. The IRS said eligibility generally required U.S. citizenship or resident-alien status in 2021, that the taxpayer could not be claimed as another taxpayer’s dependent, and a valid Social Security number, with specific rules for spouses and dependents.

The amount was calculated using 2021 tax information and reduced by the third Economic Impact Payment received, including any plus-up payment. The IRS’s 2022 guidance set these adjusted gross income phaseout thresholds for the 2021 credit:

2021 filing status Phaseout began above Credit fully phased out at
Single $75,000 $80,000
Married filing jointly $150,000 $160,000

Other thresholds applied to other filing statuses. These are 2021 eligibility figures, not current income limits for a new stimulus payment. IRS: 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit — Topic C

How people checked or claimed the credit at the time

The historical claim route was to file a 2021 federal tax return and calculate any remaining credit after accounting for the third payment received. The IRS advised taxpayers to use their payment records, including IRS Online Account or IRS notices, to determine the amount already paid. That process does not create a current general application for a $1,400 payment.

For the IRS’s explanation of the former filing method and calculation, see Topic D: Claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit and Topic E: Calculating the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

Be wary of claims about a live $1,400 application

The IRS’s stated status—that all three Economic Impact Payments have been issued—does not support claims that a general IRS application for this $1,400 credit is open. A separate benefit would need its own current official authorization and eligibility rules; the IRS sources cited here do not establish such a program. Use IRS.gov for official information, and do not treat a third-party “stimulus claim” service as an IRS application.
