Yes. You can generally create a regular Amazon.com customer account without adding a credit card. Registration normally uses your name, an email address or mobile number, a password, and any verification Amazon requests. You can browse without a payment method and add an eligible way to pay later. A card or other payment method may become necessary for an order, Prime, a subscription, Amazon Pay checkout, or seller registration.
What you need to create a basic Amazon account
For ordinary Amazon shopping, account creation and payment-method storage are separate steps. Amazon’s customer-facing help describes account access independently from adding payment instruments; Amazon Pay also says an existing Amazon customer can sign in with those credentials, while a new customer can create an account at sign-in.

- Your name
- A valid email address or mobile number
- A password
- An email or phone verification code, if requested
Amazon can change the fields and button labels by country, device, or account-risk status. A payment prompt during registration does not necessarily mean a credit card is required for a basic account; it may indicate that you entered a Prime, subscription, Amazon Pay, or other specialized flow.
How to sign up without adding a card
- Go to Amazon.com or open the official Amazon Shopping app.
- Select Create your Amazon account (the wording may vary).
- Enter the requested name, email address or mobile number, and password.
- Complete the email or phone verification step.
- Do not select a Prime trial or paid service unless you want it and have reviewed its payment requirements.
- Finish registration. Add payment information later only when you need to buy or subscribe.
To add a method later, Amazon’s current payment-management path is Account & Lists → Your Account → Your Payments → Add a payment method; labels can change. See Amazon’s instructions at Amazon Pay payment-method management.

Can you browse Amazon without a card?
Yes. The public storefront can be searched without an account or payment card. You can read reviews, compare prices, and view product pages. An account is useful for saving a cart, addresses, preferences, and orders, but browsing itself does not require checkout information.
Can you buy without a credit card?
Usually, yes, if the order accepts another eligible payment method or your Amazon account balance. Amazon can restrict methods by transaction, seller, location, product type, or fraud-prevention review, so no alternative is guaranteed for every order.
Debit cards
A bank-issued Visa or Mastercard debit card is often the simplest substitute. Amazon Pay identifies Visa and Mastercard debit cards among accepted methods (current accepted-payment guidance). A debit card is still a card—not a credit card—and it may need online purchases enabled. The issuer’s billing address, cardholder details, expiration date, and security code may need to match its records.

Amazon.com Gift Cards
You can redeem an Amazon.com Gift Card to your account and apply the balance to eligible Amazon.com purchases. Obtain one from a legitimate source, redeem its claim code, confirm the balance, and select the balance at checkout. Official gift-card information is available at Amazon’s gift-card page.

Gift cards are not universal cash substitutes. Amazon limits them to eligible Amazon.com and related-site purchases (gift-card restrictions), and they cannot be used to pay third-party merchants directly through Amazon Pay. Anyone asking for a claim code to “verify” an account, release a package, or issue a refund is displaying a major scam warning sign (Amazon Pay gift-card safety guidance).
Prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards
A general-purpose prepaid Visa or Mastercard may work for some Amazon.com orders, but acceptance depends on the issuer, available balance, online-use settings, and whether the card supports a billing address and authorization. Common failures include an unregistered address, an authorization that exceeds the remaining balance, online or recurring payments being blocked, or country restrictions. Do not assume a prepaid card will work for Prime, subscriptions, or every order.

Bank-account payments
Amazon’s payment-account documentation recognizes cards, bank accounts, and account balances in some circumstances, with availability and verification requirements (payment-account terms; bank-account verification help). A bank-account option may not appear for every customer or purchase, and it is not the same as entering bank details simply to create an account.
Other financing or store products
An Amazon-supported store or financing product may be available only to eligible applicants and is not needed to open a normal customer account. Availability and approval are transaction-specific.
| Method | Typical use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card | Ordinary purchases | Issuer and transaction authorization still apply. |
| Amazon.com Gift Card balance | Eligible Amazon.com purchases | Not direct payment for third-party Amazon Pay merchants. |
| Prepaid Visa/Mastercard | Some one-time purchases | Billing-address, balance, recurring-payment, and verification failures are possible. |
| Bank account | Some payment flows | Availability and verification vary. |
| PayPal | Not a general Amazon.com replacement | Amazon’s seller documentation excludes it as an alternative charge method. |
Prime, free trials, and subscriptions
Creating an account without a card does not guarantee that every Amazon service can be started without one. Prime trials, recurring Prime memberships, and other subscriptions may request a valid backup payment method so renewal can be authorized. The available choices vary by country, offer, account, and payment balance.

Review the payment options shown on your own Prime or subscription screen before accepting a trial. A “free” trial can still require payment verification and may renew later unless canceled under its stated terms.

Amazon.com shopping
This is the ordinary retail marketplace. A basic customer account generally can be opened without a credit card.
Amazon Pay
Amazon Pay is a checkout service on participating third-party websites and apps. Customers can use existing Amazon credentials, but the merchant’s checkout and Amazon Pay rules apply. Amazon.com Gift Cards cannot be used as direct payment to those third-party merchants. See Amazon Pay customer help and its merchant-method guidance at https://pay.amazon.com/help/201212240.

Seller Central
Opening a seller account is a major exception. Amazon’s U.S. Seller Central documentation requires an internationally chargeable credit or debit card with a valid billing address in an eligible country. It excludes prepaid cards, gift certificates, checks, PayPal, and similar alternatives for that registration charge method (Seller Central requirements). This requirement does not prove that a normal shopping account needs a credit card.
Amazon Business
Business purchasing accounts and payment features can have additional verification or payment rules. Do not assume that a personal customer-account rule applies to every business feature.
What if Amazon asks for a payment method?
First identify which flow you are actually in. A payment request may mean you selected Prime or a subscription, opened Amazon Pay checkout, started Seller Central registration, or triggered account or transaction verification. It can also be a location-specific requirement—or a fake page.
- Exit the payment or membership flow.
- Return directly to Amazon.com or the official app and choose ordinary account creation.
- Complete email or phone verification.
- Add a payment method only when an intended order or service requires it.
- If the request came from an unsolicited email, text, or call, do not use its link. Open Amazon directly and check your account.
Fixing a rejected debit or prepaid card
- Recheck the card number, expiration date, security code, cardholder name, and billing address.
- Ask the issuer whether online, international, recurring, or merchant-authorized purchases are enabled.
- Make sure the available balance exceeds the full authorization amount, including possible tax or shipping.
- Replace an expired or canceled card with the current one.
- Try a standard bank-issued debit card if a disposable or restricted prepaid card fails.
- Check whether the order contains a subscription, digital item, or other service with payment restrictions.
- Contact the issuer if it is declining authorization; contact Amazon through the official app or account if a valid method is repeatedly rejected.
Amazon’s detailed card-verification factors—matching billing data, CVV, expiration, cardholder name, currency support, and adequate available credit—are documented specifically for seller registration, so they should not be treated as universal customer-account rules.

Lacking a credit card does not determine whether someone may independently use an Amazon account. Children and teenagers should follow Amazon’s terms, applicable law, and a parent or guardian’s instructions; do not bypass age or parental controls to avoid a payment requirement.
