Short answer: HotHardware’s Prime Day 2024 parts list did not quite make a $1,000 tower. Using its lowest listed prices, a coherent Ryzen 7 7700X/Radeon RX 6750 XT build totaled about $1,023 before tax; HotHardware rounded its own estimate to roughly $1,030. Those prices were observed on July 16, 2024, and are historical—not current August 2026 offers.
The roundup was a menu of alternatives rather than one finished configuration. The practical lesson for a 1440p gaming build is to keep the CPU sensible, retain 32GB of memory, and direct as much of the budget as possible to the graphics card.
The baseline build and its real cost
This parts list recreates the least-expensive sensible combination from HotHardware’s July 16, 2024 Prime Day roundup. Prices below are historical deal-day observations for tower components only.
| Component | Model | Historical price | Why it belongs |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 7 7700X | $245 | Eight Zen 4 cores; a balanced gaming choice on AM5 |
| Cooler | Cooler Master Hyper 212 Spectrum V3 | $15 | Low-cost tower cooler; confirm AM5 hardware and height |
| Motherboard | Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX | $160 | AM5 platform, three PCIe 4.0 M.2 sockets, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi‑Fi 6E as described in the source |
| Memory | 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 | $85 | Dual-channel capacity and speed commonly paired with Zen 4 |
| SSD | Acer Predator GM7000 1TB | $68 | Lowest-cost storage option; the source also once called it “MG7000,” apparently a typo |
| GPU | Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB | About $290 | More conventional gaming choice than the similarly priced Arc A770 |
| Case | Cooler Master HAF 500 | $70 | ATX airflow case with two 200mm front fans and a dedicated GPU-cooling mount |
| PSU | Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 850W | $90 | Modular, ATX 3.0-rated unit with substantial headroom |
| Calculated subtotal | About $1,023 | Before sales tax, shipping, rebates and accessories | |
Replacing the RX 6750 XT with the $287 Sparkle Arc A770 produces a similar total of about $1,020. The arithmetic explains why the original headline’s “$1,000” should be read as approximate rather than a strict cap.

Choose the CPU without starving the GPU
Gaming-first: Ryzen 7 7700X
HotHardware selected the 7700X as its gaming-value option. At the historical $245 price, it leaves more of the budget for the GPU than the higher-core-count alternatives. For a gaming-first machine, that allocation is more logical than buying a premium processor and settling for a weaker graphics card.
Productivity variant: Ryzen 9 7900X3D or 7950X3D
The roundup listed historical prices of $328 for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D and $465 for the 7950X3D. Those chips make more sense when heavy rendering, compiling, video work or other threaded workloads matter alongside games. They also require a stronger cooling plan and push the total well beyond a strict $1,000 gaming budget.
Cooling: treat the Hyper 212 as a budget option
The Hyper 212 Spectrum V3 was listed at $15, with the Thermaltake UX200 at $20 as another low-cost choice. HotHardware suggested the dual-fan ID-Cooling SE-225-XT at $30 for the Ryzen 9 parts. These prices do not establish particular temperatures or noise levels. Check that the exact cooler includes AM5 mounting hardware and fits the case. Sustained all-core productivity loads are more demanding than typical gaming, so a higher-power CPU may justify a more capable tower cooler.
Motherboard choices on AM5
| Board | Historical price | Reported distinction | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX | $160 | Three PCIe 4.0 M.2 sockets, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi‑Fi 6E | Lowest-cost balanced build |
| ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi | $170 | One PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, USB4-capable Thunderbolt connector, Wi‑Fi 6 and apparently stronger power delivery | Expansion or overclocking-oriented builds |
These are specifications reported in the 2024 article. Board revisions and regional variants can differ, so verify the exact manufacturer page before buying. Confirm CPU support and BIOS compatibility; use BIOS Flashback if your board provides it.

Memory and storage: spend where it changes the experience
32GB is the sensible gaming baseline
The recommended kit used two 16GB modules, preserving dual-channel operation without filling all four slots. DDR5-6000 CL30 is a commonly recommended Zen 4 target, not a guarantee for every processor, BIOS or four-DIMM arrangement. Enter the firmware and enable AMD EXPO (or the board’s equivalent profile) to request the advertised settings. If training fails, power down, clear CMOS, boot at defaults, update the BIOS if needed, and retry with a lower memory speed or conservative settings.
The listed 96GB DDR5-5600 kit cost $220 historically. Reserve that capacity for unusually large mod sets, virtual machines, content creation or other memory-heavy work rather than ordinary gaming value.
1TB versus 2TB and 4TB
| Drive | Historical Prime Day price | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Acer Predator GM7000 1TB | $68 | Cheapest entry point, but Windows, applications and several large games can fill it quickly |
| ADATA XPG Gammix S70 Blade 2TB | $119 | Best capacity compromise if it does not require downgrading the GPU |
| Samsung 990 Pro 2TB | $149 | Premium option; gaming load times usually do not justify sacrificing graphics budget |
| HP FX900 Pro 4TB | $233 | Large-library choice |
| Samsung 990 Pro 4TB | $299 | Premium high-capacity choice |
Some 990 Pro offers included an attached heatsink. Select the bare or heatsink version to match your motherboard’s M.2 cover and clearance. Storage prices and availability have changed since Prime Day 2024.
GPU decision: the part that sets the gaming tier
Near the original budget: RX 6750 XT or Arc A770
The Arc A770 16GB was listed at $287 and the RX 6750 XT 12GB at about $290. The Intel card offers more VRAM and XeSS support, while HotHardware favored the Radeon as the more familiar mainstream gaming choice. Actual results depend on the game, settings and driver version; the source did not provide a complete benchmark table.

- CPU: AMD Ryzen7 5700X (up to 4.6GHz) 8-Core 16-Thread to easily handle multi-line tasks
- Main board: MSI B550M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and stability
- GPU: Geforce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7 Graphics Cards (Brand may vary) Support DLSS 4 multi frame generation, ray tracing, and Reflex 2 delay optimization
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (16GB*2) SSD: 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe
- Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance
More 1440p headroom: RX 7800 XT
The PowerColor RX 7800 XT was $450 historically. Substituting it for the roughly $290 card adds about $160, taking the otherwise identical system to approximately $1,180 before tax. It is the more substantial graphics upgrade, but it is no longer a $1,000-class build.
Nvidia alternative: RTX 4070
The Gigabyte RTX 4070 Aero OC V2 was listed at $510. Consider it when Nvidia’s software, ray-tracing features or encoding support are priorities. Its extra cost leaves less room for a larger SSD or other upgrades, and no precise performance ranking should be inferred from the roundup alone.

The HAF 500 is an ATX case, but the same GPU model can have different lengths and slot thicknesses among board partners. Before ordering, check:
- Motherboard form factor and the card’s exact length, thickness and power connectors.
- CPU-cooler height and front-radiator clearance.
- Power-supply length and the locations of drive cages.
- Front USB, fan and lighting headers.
- Whether the included fan positions provide the airflow you want.
The GF A3’s 850W rating supplies useful headroom for many midrange and upper-midrange cards. Wattage alone is not a quality guarantee: verify the exact model, regional cable set, warranty and the GPU maker’s connector and power recommendations. The source described this unit as ATX 3.0-compatible with a 12V2x6 connection; that applies to the specific model and included cables, not every Thermaltake PSU. The listed be quiet! Straight Power 12 1200W at $144 is unnecessary for this baseline.

What the $1,000 figure leaves out
The subtotal excludes sales tax, shipping, rebates, operating-system cost, monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset or speakers, Wi‑Fi hardware if needed, extra storage, tools and possible additional fans. A strict all-in desk setup therefore requires a larger budget or used/open-box parts.
Who should follow this plan?
- Good fit: DIY builders targeting roughly 1440p gaming, buyers who already own peripherals, and shoppers comfortable checking BIOS, profiles and clearances.
- Use a different plan: anyone who cannot exceed $1,000 including tax and peripherals, needs a monitor, prioritizes heavy creator workloads, or specifically wants maximum ray-tracing performance.
Historical-price warning
Every dollar above was observed during Prime Day on July 16, 2024, as documented by HotHardware. Prime Day prices can expire or vary by seller, region, warranty and revision. Before publishing or purchasing in 2026, recheck live retailer listings and the manufacturer pages for the exact model; do not treat these figures as current discounts.
The Bottom Line
The honest reconstruction is an approximately $1,023 pre-tax tower built around the Ryzen 7 7700X and RX 6750 XT—not a guaranteed $1,000 system. Keep 32GB of RAM, verify every compatibility detail, and spend extra on the RX 7800 XT only if a roughly $1,180 total fits your budget.
