The company reported approximately $836 million in 2025 sales, while the United States prohibited covered Kaspersky antivirus and cybersecurity transactions involving U.S. persons. Those facts point to a smaller, more Russia-centered and politically constrained company—not an imminent collapse and not a return to its former global position.
“Survival” has three different tests: corporate survival (continued operation and revenue), strategic survival (technical competitiveness and international relevance), and global-market survival (access to Western governments, enterprises, payment systems and trust-sensitive customers). Kaspersky appears capable of passing the first test. The second is uncertain; the third has already suffered a structural loss.
What the war changed
Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 intensified scrutiny of Russian technology companies. For a cybersecurity vendor, the concern is unusually acute: endpoint and network products can receive privileged access to devices, systems, telemetry and update channels.
The U.S. Department of Commerce concluded that Russian government influence and Russia’s offensive cyber capabilities created an unacceptable risk that could not be solved through mitigation short of prohibition. The determination was principally about potential coercion, access and national-security exposure—not a public finding that Kaspersky had used its products in a specific destructive attack. See the Bureau of Industry and Security determination and its frequently asked questions.

The war therefore created a market paradox: demand for cyber defense increased, but Russian ownership became a commercial liability in many Western markets.
How severe is the U.S. loss?
The United States did not simply issue a consumer warning. Under the Commerce Department’s ICTS action, new covered transactions were prohibited from July 20, 2024. Existing U.S. customers could receive certain updates only through September 29, 2024; that transition period has expired. The prohibition also addresses indirect sales, resale, integration and white-labeling. The relevant dates and scope are summarized in the Commerce Department announcement.
That removes more than a country’s direct sales. Kaspersky loses renewals, U.S. customer references, potential multinational standardization, and access to parts of the cloud, payment, distribution and partner ecosystems linked to U.S. companies. A global corporation may exclude Kaspersky everywhere because one fleet cannot legally or operationally use it in the United States.
“Banned in the U.S.” is still too broad as a legal summary. Kaspersky said certain informational, training, consulting and advisory services remained available after the final determination, while covered antivirus and cybersecurity products and services were restricted. The company’s compliance statement and current BIS guidance should be checked for a particular transaction.

| Measure | 2025 result reported by Kaspersky | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Total sales | Approximately $836 million, up 4% year over year | Indicates continued scale, but does not show that U.S. revenue was replaced. |
| B2B portfolio | Up 16% | Suggests business products are becoming more important. |
| Enterprise sales | Up 21% | Could support a shift toward larger organizational customers. |
| Small and medium-sized business | Up 7% | Positive growth, though geographic composition is not disclosed in the cited release. |
| Non-endpoint products | Up 29% | Points toward network, industrial and other products beyond classic antivirus. |
| Endpoint products | Up 1% | Much slower growth than the broader portfolio. |
| Russia and CIS consumer sales | Up 16% | Shows strength in the company’s regional home market; it is not independent market data. |
| Middle East consumer sales | Up 11% | Shows traction in one non-Western region. |
| Alternative “actual rates” result | $944.6 million, up 15% | Kaspersky’s exchange-rate presentation; it is not interchangeable with the consolidated $836 million figure. |
The company also reported more than 560 product releases and upgrades during 2025. That supports continued engineering activity, but revenue growth alone cannot answer how much came from volume, pricing, exchange rates, government-linked procurement or a particular geography. The full release does not establish that lost Western sales have been fully replaced.
Can Russia and nearby markets replace the West?
Why the regional base helps
- Western vendors’ withdrawal increases demand for locally available security products.
- Russian technological-sovereignty policies favor domestically controlled infrastructure.
- Kaspersky has an established brand, workforce, distribution network and installed base.
- Industrial, network and infrastructure protection can produce larger contracts than consumer antivirus.
Kaspersky says it has invested in operational-technology security for more than a decade and reported 20% growth for Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity in Russia in its Russian-language release. That is a company claim, documented at Kaspersky Russia.
Why substitution is incomplete
- Sanctions, export controls, payment restrictions and limited access to advanced components and services constrain the Russian technology sector.
- A domestic market may involve lower prices, a weaker currency and greater dependence on state or quasi-state procurement.
- Local competitors and state-backed alternatives can receive procurement preference.
- Products optimized for Russian requirements may be harder to export where customers fear sanctions exposure or interoperability problems.
- Concentration in Russia and the CIS increases exposure to one economic and regulatory environment.
Russia and the CIS can help Kaspersky survive. The available evidence does not show that they can reproduce the scale, margins, references or political neutrality of a broad Western market.

There is no basis here for saying that the European Union has enacted one blanket Kaspersky ban. Europe combines several different mechanisms:
- Legal prohibition: a regulation may make a transaction unlawful.
- Government procurement exclusion: a public body may refuse a vendor even when private use is lawful.
- Security warning: an authority may advise against use without creating a universal ban.
- Corporate risk policy: a multinational may prohibit Russian-origin software internally.
- Consumer availability: a product may remain technically purchasable while support, payments or renewals become uncertain.
EU sanctions and export controls target Russian economic, military-industrial, technology and cyber-related capacity, with additional measures concerning surveillance and repression. Consult the European Commission sanctions overview, Regulation 2024/1485, the Commission’s sanctions list information, and the Council’s cyber-attack sanctions regime. The EU’s July 2026 package is described by the European External Action Service. None of those sources, as cited here, establishes a single EU-wide Kaspersky prohibition.

Is Kaspersky still technically competitive?
Technical capability and strategic acceptability are separate questions. Kaspersky continues to publish threat intelligence, release products and operate across endpoint, enterprise, industrial and network security. Its 2025 release claims more than 560 releases and upgrades and strong growth in non-endpoint products.
A technically effective product can nevertheless be unacceptable to a government or enterprise if:
Recommended Free Tools
- the vendor may be subject to foreign-government pressure;
- update infrastructure or telemetry is controlled from a sensitive jurisdiction;
- legal, financial or technical support could be interrupted;
- insurers, regulators or auditors reject the product;
- sanctions or export controls could make the software unavailable.
Kaspersky’s Transparency Center and source-code review arrangements can provide evidence about code and governance. They cannot remove a government’s legal power to compel a company operating under its jurisdiction. Transparency reduces some uncertainty; it does not settle the geopolitical question.
Why the war can increase demand and reduce Kaspersky’s market
The conflict has increased attention to endpoint defense, critical infrastructure, industrial-control systems, threat intelligence, ransomware, destructive malware and supply-chain risk. That expands the market for capable vendors, including Kaspersky.
At the same time, the same conflict makes Western buyers more cautious about Russian-origin software. Kaspersky may gain demand in politically aligned or nonaligned markets while losing security-sensitive government and multinational customers. Higher overall cybersecurity spending therefore does not imply a larger addressable market for Kaspersky.

What could still make the company contract?
Geopolitical escalation
More countries could impose bans, procurement exclusions or restrictions on Russian cybersecurity products.
Sanctions and payment disruption
Restrictions on banks, currencies, intermediaries, software exports and financial services can make sales and renewals difficult even without a Kaspersky-specific designation. EU sanctions continue to evolve, as the Commission, Council and EEAS sources above demonstrate.
Technology isolation and talent loss
Reduced access to advanced chips, cloud services, development tools, research partnerships and international employees could erode competitiveness over time.
Customer concentration and brand bifurcation
A company strong in Russia and selected emerging markets may still be commercially healthy while becoming unusable in Western procurement. Once customers migrate to Microsoft, ESET, Bitdefender, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne or another approved vendor, winning them back would be difficult even after political normalization.
Compliance uncertainty
Multinational buyers may avoid Kaspersky where lawyers and procurement teams cannot confidently assess future restrictions, even if present use is technically lawful.

Which future is most plausible?
| Scenario | What it would look like | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Regional survivor | Russia, the CIS, the Middle East, parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America provide the core business; industrial and enterprise products expand. | Most likely on current evidence. |
| Global niche vendor | Kaspersky retains customers in countries prioritizing technical performance and remains active in threat intelligence, industrial and specialized enterprise security. | Plausible, but dependent on payment access, partners and local trust. |
| State-dependent national champion | Revenue becomes increasingly tied to Russian state procurement and sovereignty programs. | Can sustain operations while making Western re-entry less likely. |
| Long-term contraction | Sanctions, talent loss, payment barriers and cumulative distrust gradually reduce international scale. | Material downside risk. |
| Re-entry after geopolitical change | A settlement is followed by new ownership, governance, data, audit, distribution and regulatory arrangements. | Peace would be necessary for normalization in some markets, but not sufficient. |
What customers should do
Consumers
Check your country’s law, the product’s update and renewal availability, payment continuity, employer or government policy, and the sensitivity of data on the device. For U.S. users, covered Kaspersky products and services are subject to the Commerce Department prohibition; product quality is not the deciding issue.
Businesses
Assess ownership and jurisdiction, government-compulsion risk, telemetry, update infrastructure, incident response, insurance and regulatory acceptance, contract continuity, sanctions exposure and migration cost. Inventory licenses, operating systems, exclusions, uninstall requirements, overlapping agents and reboot windows before changing products.
Critical-infrastructure and industrial operators
Evaluate technical performance alongside long asset lifecycles, strict change control, limited patch windows, national-security procurement rules and the cost of replacing an agent in an operational environment. A product can be technically strong and still create unacceptable strategic dependency.
Common alternatives by use case
| Option | Likely fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender | Microsoft 365, Windows and Entra/Azure environments | Integration can deepen dependence on one ecosystem. |
| Bitdefender | Home users seeking a conventional antivirus suite | Features and renewal terms vary by region and promotion. |
| ESET | Consumers and organizations seeking a non-Russian-origin endpoint vendor | Check enterprise capability and local availability. |
| CrowdStrike Falcon | Medium and large organizations with security operations | Often excessive for home use and requires operational maturity. |
| SentinelOne Singularity | Businesses seeking automated endpoint detection and response | Designed more for managed enterprise security than casual consumer protection. |
| Windows Security | Lower-risk, well-maintained Windows systems | Not equivalent to every enterprise EDR or managed-security program. |
Do not choose solely by headquarters country. Examine telemetry, update control, ownership, support, incident response and procurement terms. Avoid gray-market licenses, which add legal, payment, malware and support risks.
Verdict
Kaspersky can survive as a company without surviving as the same company. Its reported 2025 growth and regional demand make near-term financial collapse unlikely. But the U.S. prohibition, European and allied risk policies, customer migration and continuing sanctions have probably ended its old model of broad Western trust. The most credible future is a technically capable, geopolitically partitioned vendor whose commercial center of gravity moves away from the United States and much of Western Europe.
