No reliable evidence shows that affiliate links themselves improve AI search visibility. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO practices as Search, with no special AI optimization required. A page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link, but that eligibility does not guarantee it will be selected.
Affiliate links can appear on pages that AI systems cite, but that association does not show the links caused the citations. Treat affiliate links as a way to earn commissions—not as a visibility tactic—and measure results separately.
What Google says about affiliate links and AI search
Google’s guidance does not identify affiliate links as a ranking signal or an AI-citation boost. It says the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” See Google’s guidance on AI features and your website.
For a page to be eligible as a supporting link in those features, it must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Eligibility is not a promise of crawling, indexing, or display. Google recommends making pages crawlable and discoverable through internal links, providing important information in text, maintaining a good page experience, and ensuring structured data matches visible content. It does not require special schema or new AI-specific machine-readable files.

Affiliate links are a separate matter: they are paid links and should be qualified appropriately. Google recommends rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" for paid links and says affiliate links should be tagged. Improper qualification can lead to manual or algorithmic actions; that is a link-quality and compliance concern, not evidence that correctly tagged affiliate links boost AI visibility. See Google’s link best practices and its July 2021 reminder on qualifying links.
Why affiliate links on cited pages do not prove a boost
A 2026 Glass Digital study found that 87.7% of editorial pages retrieved by AI assistants carried affiliate links: 420 of 479 retrieved pages that could be classified as editorial and commercial. The study analyzed roughly 1,270 AI answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. It used 25 prompts in each of three UK retail categories—kitchenware, automotive parts, and designer furniture—run daily from August 26–28, 2026. See Glass Digital’s study and methodology.
That percentage describes the sampled pages that were retrieved; it does not compare otherwise equivalent pages with and without affiliate links. The short window and narrow UK category sample also limit how far the result can be generalized. It cannot establish that adding affiliate links caused a page to be retrieved.

A 2026 preprint by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal, and Jacob M. Montgomery analyzed 55,393 trending queries across 19 categories over 40 days. It reports that 13.7% of those queries returned an AI Overview during its March 13–April 21, 2026 observation period, and that some cited domains were absent from co-displayed first-page results. This suggests AI Overview source selection can differ from ordinary visible rankings; the study did not test affiliate links as a cause. Its activation rate is specific to that query sample and period, not a universal rate. Read the study preprint.

How to measure AI visibility without mistaking a snapshot for a trend
For Google features, begin with Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance reporting when available. Google says its reporting can help publishers understand discovery through Google Search and Discover AI features. Pair that view with ordinary Search performance and page-level checks: a page that is not indexed or snippet-eligible is not eligible as a supporting link under Google’s stated criteria. Google also cautions that third-party vendors do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems; vendor scores are external observations, not Google metrics. See Google’s AI features guidance.
Rank #3
- Set a baseline. Record the pages, queries, countries, devices, dates, and Google AI feature you care about. Keep AI Overviews and AI Mode distinct rather than treating them as one surface.
- Check eligibility. Verify indexing and snippet eligibility, crawl access, internal discoverability, and that important page information is available as text.
- Track first-party reporting over time. Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report where available, alongside ordinary Search data. Compare the same pages and query groups across consistent time windows.
- Inspect answers repeatedly. Check actual answers for your target query set on the relevant platform and record whether your page is linked, merely mentioned, or absent. Note the date and location for each run because results can vary.
- Evaluate third-party monitors as samples. Ask which platforms and AI surfaces they cover, which countries and queries they sampled, whether runs are repeatable, whether they report page-level citations or only brand mentions, and how transparently they describe their limits.
A one-off prompt check is not a dependable visibility trend. Separate platform, date, country, device, query, page, and feature in your records so a change in one does not get mistaken for an effect of affiliate links.
How to test whether affiliate links make a difference
A credible causal test needs more than adding links and watching a dashboard. One possible design is to compare matched pages or make controlled changes while keeping content quality, topic, technical access, and query set as stable as possible. Track outcomes across repeated searches and enough time to distinguish a durable change from normal variation.
Rank #4
- Use comparable pages or a controlled change rather than changing many elements at once.
- Keep the target queries, platforms, page content, and technical conditions as consistent as practical.
- Record link placement and qualification, and monitor both Google reporting and repeated answer observations.
- Do not attribute a change to affiliate links if content, site structure, indexing, or other conditions changed at the same time.
This is a testing approach, not an established finding that affiliate links improve visibility.
How to handle affiliate links responsibly
Qualify paid links for Google
For paid affiliate links, use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" as appropriate. Write descriptive anchor text that accurately sets expectations for readers and Google. Do not hide links or use them to manipulate rankings.
Disclose commissions clearly to US readers
If you earn commissions, the FTC says to disclose that relationship clearly and conspicuously so readers can evaluate the endorsement. Put the disclosure near the relevant recommendation or link. The FTC gives “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post” as an example and notes that “affiliate link” alone may not tell consumers that the publisher is paid. This is consumer-transparency guidance, not a search visibility technique. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

What to prioritize instead
Build pages that are useful, reliable, and accessible to both readers and search systems. Google’s people-first guidance emphasizes original value, clear sourcing, and trust; its AI guidance points back to technical accessibility and helpful content rather than a special AI markup or affiliate-link tactic. See Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.
Quick Recap
- Make the page crawlable, indexable, and internally findable.
- Answer the reader’s question with original, accurate information and transparent sourcing.
- Use structured data only where appropriate and keep it consistent with what readers can see.
- Qualify and disclose affiliate links for their proper purposes, then judge visibility using repeated, clearly scoped measurements.
