Cadence Design Systems announced on November 17, 2025, that Dr. Luc Van den hove would join its board of directors effective January 1, 2026. The appointment adds semiconductor research and industry experience to Cadence’s board; it was not an executive hire or an announced commercial deal with imec.
What Cadence announced
Cadence’s board appointed Van den hove on November 17, 2025, with his service effective January 1, 2026. The company confirmed the appointment and effective date in a Form 8-K filed under Item 5.02, which covers director appointments. Read the SEC filing.
Cadence chair ML Krakauer cited Van den hove’s technical expertise, ecosystem relationships and broad industry perspective. Cadence said those qualities would be valuable as artificial intelligence reshapes semiconductor and system design. That is the company’s stated rationale, not evidence that the appointment itself will change Cadence’s strategy or produce a particular financial result. Cadence’s announcement.

Why imec experience matters to Cadence
Cadence sells software, hardware and intellectual-property products used in chip and system design. Imec’s work in nanoelectronics and digital technologies places it within the semiconductor research ecosystem, giving Van den hove experience relevant to the technologies and relationships surrounding that industry.
It is reasonable to view his appointment as a way to add board-level perspective on semiconductor research, advanced process technology and industry ecosystems. That is an interpretation of his background and Cadence’s stated rationale, not a disclosed business outcome. The appointment announcement did not announce a new Cadence-imec contract, investment, technology transfer or joint product.
How his imec role changed in 2026
When Cadence announced the appointment, Van den hove was expected to remain imec’s president and CEO through March 31, 2026, then become chair of imec’s board on April 1. That transition has since taken place: Patrick Vandenameele became imec’s CEO on April 1, 2026, while Van den hove moved into the chair role and continued to provide strategic guidance and stakeholder support. imec’s leadership-transition announcement.

What the appointment means—and what it does not
This is a board-governance appointment, not a change to Cadence’s executive leadership. Van den hove joined as a director, not as a Cadence employee or operating executive. His imec background helps explain the relevance of his expertise, but the available announcement and filings do not say that he represents imec on Cadence’s board or that the two organizations entered a commercial partnership as a result.
