CAD to USD Exchange Rates: Bank Rate vs. Mid-Market Rate Explained

A reference rate is a benchmark, not a guaranteed customer price. Compare the final USD received or CAD charged after exchange rates and fees.

The mid-market or reference rate is a comparison benchmark, not a guaranteed rate for your transaction. To see what converting Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars will actually cost, compare the final amount of USD delivered—or the final CAD charged—after the provider’s exchange rate and any separate fees.

What does the CAD-to-USD exchange rate mean?

Always check the quote direction. A rate of CAD 1.4246 per USD means one U.S. dollar costs C$1.4246; it does not mean one Canadian dollar buys US$1.4246. The reverse quote, USD per CAD, is the reciprocal and will be a different number.

The Bank of Canada’s daily table expresses rates as units of foreign currency in Canadian dollars. Its USD observation for October 2, 2026 was CAD 1.4246 per USD. That is a dated indicative reference rate, not a current retail quote. Bank of Canada: Daily exchange rates

What is the mid-market rate, and why may a bank quote differ?

Mid-market or reference rate

“Mid-market rate” is commonly used for a benchmark between market buy and sell quotes. It helps compare prices, but it does not establish that an individual customer can transact at that price. The Bank of Canada describes its rates as indicative averages based on aggregated price quotes from financial institutions, not guaranteed consumer rates. It publishes daily averages once each business day by 16:30 ET. Bank of Canada: Daily exchange rates

The Bank’s methodology says its notional exchange-rate quotes are supplied by LSEG. Its published rate is useful as a reference point, but it is not necessarily the rate offered by a bank, card issuer, or transfer service for a particular transaction. Bank or provider customer rate

A customer quote applies to a particular amount, currency direction, channel, and time. It may differ from a reference rate, and separate fees can apply. The available official sources do not establish one typical markup that applies to every Canadian bank or transaction, so a generic “bank spread” percentage is not a reliable way to estimate your cost.

How to compare the actual cost of converting CAD and USD

Compare quotes for the same transaction—not just the rate displayed on a screen. Use the same starting amount, currency direction, and transaction type, and include fees that are charged separately.

  1. Set the transaction: record the amount, whether you are converting CAD to USD or USD to CAD, and whether this is a cash exchange, transfer, card purchase, or ATM withdrawal.
  2. Record each quote: note the offered rate and when it was quoted. A reference rate published on a different date or time may not be a like-for-like comparison.
  3. Add separate charges: include transfer, conversion, card, or ATM fees that apply to your transaction.
  4. Compare the result: for money sent, compare how much USD the recipient gets after fees. For a purchase, compare the final CAD charge after conversion and related fees.
  5. Consider practical differences: account for delivery or settlement time, access, and convenience alongside the total cost.

A rate that looks closer to the benchmark is not automatically the least expensive option if it comes with a separate fee. Likewise, a lower fee does not prove a quote is better if the conversion rate is less favorable. The final amount received or charged is the useful comparison.

How credit-card foreign-currency charges work

For a foreign-currency card purchase, the card issuer applies an exchange rate and may also apply a foreign-currency conversion charge. The issuer’s card agreement sets the applicable charge; rates and terms vary. Check that agreement rather than assuming one conversion-charge percentage applies to all cards. Financial Consumer Agency of Canada: How credit cards work

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) includes a 2.5% conversion charge in an illustrative example. That figure is an example calculation, not a claim about every card. Use your own card agreement and transaction details to estimate your charge. FCAC: How credit cards work

Should you pay in CAD or USD when travelling?

A merchant or ATM may offer to convert a transaction into your home currency, Canadian dollars. This is called dynamic currency conversion (DCC). The merchant or ATM applies the conversion, which may include its own exchange rate and additional fees; that is separate from the card issuer’s conversion process.

Visa advises cardholders to consider paying in local currency to avoid the merchant’s conversion markup. If a terminal or ATM offers a choice, review the displayed amount and currency before accepting; choosing local currency means the card issuer’s applicable terms govern its conversion. What to check before accepting a quote

  • Does the rate say CAD per USD or USD per CAD?
  • Is it a dated reference rate or a transaction quote for your amount?
  • Are transfer, conversion, card, or ATM fees separate from the displayed rate?
  • What final USD amount will be delivered, or what final CAD amount will be charged?
  • For card or ATM transactions, are you accepting a merchant’s DCC offer or paying in local currency?
  • Do timing, delivery, or access differences matter for this transaction?
