A CA firm internship project report should document what you actually did or observed, explain the firm context relevant to your placement, and show what you learned. There is no universal college format established by the sources cited here: follow your institution’s brief first, and keep an academic project report distinct from ICAI’s formal practical-training records.

Before you start: confirm which report you need

“CA firm internship report” can mean an academic project submitted to a college or university, or documentation associated with ICAI practical training. They are not automatically interchangeable. Ask your institution for its required order, length, citation style, assessment rubric, and front matter before drafting. The report structure below is an adaptable outline, not an official universal template.

ICAI’s service-completion guidance identifies formal documentation by training category: Form 108 for articles, Form 105 for industrial training, and Form 114 for audit service. The page also refers to a practical-training report accompanying relevant completion documentation. Do not assume these records meet a college project requirement unless your institution confirms it. The page includes legacy durations, so consult current ICAI requirements for an individual compliance decision.

Suggested CA firm internship project report structure

  1. Title page and required certification: Give the project title, your name and programme details, the firm’s name, internship dates, and the guide or supervisor’s name. Add a declaration or certificate only if your institution requires it and the firm or supervisor approves the wording.
  2. Acknowledgements and contents: Acknowledge people who supported the placement or report, subject to any institutional conventions. Include a contents page and, where useful, lists of tables and figures.
  3. Introduction: Explain the placement context, the report’s purpose and objectives, its scope, and how you gathered information. Make clear whether details come from your own work, observation, approved firm materials, or public sources.
  4. Firm profile: Describe only details you can verify, such as the services relevant to your placement and the structure you were permitted to discuss. Avoid unsupported claims about the firm’s history or operations.
  5. Internship role and work: State your dates, team or department, supervision, assigned responsibilities, and representative tasks. Use records you are permitted to access; distinguish tasks you completed from tasks you observed or supported.
  6. Focused project or case study: Select one defined task or process. Explain its background, your method, the findings or output, and limitations. Remove identifying client details and confidential information unless the firm has explicitly authorized their use.
  7. Learning and reflection: Connect what you observed or did to concepts from your programme. Be specific about skills or ideas you developed, and accurately identify work performed by you, a supervisor, or the firm.
  8. Conclusion and recommendations: Draw conclusions from the work documented in the report. Make recommendations only when they are relevant and supported by your evidence.
  9. References and appendices: Cite public sources and include only permitted templates, anonymized examples, or supporting documents. Attach internship evidence only when both institutional and firm rules allow it.

A published VSIT student-project collection includes CA-firm internship examples covering firm operations and services, intern responsibilities, and applications used during placements. These examples illustrate possible content; they do not establish a required format for other institutions. See the VSIT student project collection.

How to describe your work accurately

Build the report around evidence you are authorized to use, rather than a generic description of what a CA firm might do. For each representative task, identify your role, the relevant concept or process, the output or learning, and the limits of what you can claim. If you observed a task rather than carrying it out, say so. If work was reviewed or completed under supervision, describe that accurately.

For trainees who fall within its scope, ICAI announced on 8 January 2026 that its E-Diary is mandatory for CA students commencing practical training from 1 January 2026. ICAI describes daily attendance and task recording, fortnightly task submission and review, and trainee access to prior entries. Those records may help substantiate a report’s timeline and work description, but use only entries you are entitled to access and share. The announcement quotes ICAI President CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda describing it as “a digitally approved and authenticated record of an articled trainee’s practical experience.” Read the ICAI E-Diary announcement for the stated scope and details.

Protect client and firm confidentiality

Do not include client names, financial data, tax records, audit evidence, or internal firm documents without authorization. Anonymizing a name may not be enough if dates, amounts, industry details, or a distinctive transaction could identify the client. Check the firm’s confidentiality rules and your institution’s submission requirements before including any example, screenshot, workpaper, or appendix. When permission is not available, describe the process at a general level without reproducing sensitive information.

Use audit templates only when they fit

ICAI’s Auditing and Assurance Standards Board lists audit working paper templates in PDF and Word formats, dated 3 July 2023 and last updated 12 July 2023. These are professional audit-work resources, not general internship-report templates. Use one only if it is relevant to your work and permitted by your firm and supervisor. The templates are available from the ICAI audit working paper templates page.
