BT announced on 31 May 2013 that it would close the BT Yahoo portal and move customers to its own BT Mail service. The change was intended to preserve customers’ existing email addresses and stored messages, although some users might have to reset their passwords. The original plan called for completion by the end of 2013, but BT’s later reporting shows that the migration continued in phases through 2014.
What BT announced
BT’s announcement covered three related changes, rather than an immediate deletion of BT Yahoo accounts:
- The BT Yahoo portal would close during summer 2013. Customers would initially reach BT Yahoo Mail through a link from BT.com.
- Mailboxes would later move to BT Mail. BT planned to transfer customers from the Yahoo-supported platform to a service operated under the BT brand.
- BT.com would become a unified customer portal. Email and other BT services were to be managed from one online destination as part of a broader website and services revamp.

What changed—and what did not

The practical implication was that customers did not initially need to create a replacement mailbox or tell contacts that their address had changed. The likely changes were the login route, the interface, possible password credentials and, for some users, mail-app settings.

Why BT removed Yahoo from the service
The evidence points to a branding and service-consolidation decision. BT wanted one destination for email, account management and other online services, while reducing the prominence of Yahoo’s platform and branding. The move was tied to a planned relaunch of BT.com and a wider consumer-services overhaul.
It is not established that BT acted because of a particular Yahoo security incident, outage or performance failure. Nor does the announcement show that Yahoo consumer services such as Flickr or Yahoo Answers were being closed. BT-provided email and unrelated Yahoo accounts were separate products.
The timetable was longer than the headline suggested
The 31 May 2013 report said the Yahoo portal would close in summer and that customers would be moved later that year. That was the intended timetable, not the final completion date.

- 31 May 2013: BT announced the portal closure and planned migration to BT Mail.
- 2014 annual report: BT said BT Mail and the new portal had launched, but that all remaining customers on the Yahoo-supported service were still expected to move during 2014. Read the annual report.
- October 2014: BT was still addressing customers who had not yet been transferred and published guidance for checking whether migration emails were genuine: BT’s migration-email verification page.
“Ditches Yahoo” therefore describes a phased platform and portal transition, not an overnight shutdown of every BT Yahoo mailbox.
What customers needed to watch for
Migration messages
BT said it would contact customers about the timing and process. A genuine message should be checked rather than trusted automatically, because an account migration is an obvious phishing opportunity.
- Check that linked pages use a bt.com address.
- Confirm that the message identifies the customer’s BT email address.
- Hover over links and inspect their destination before opening them.
- When possible, type BT’s address manually instead of following an unsolicited login link.
BT’s historical verification guidance is preserved at bt.com/static/includes/account/portal/email_genuine/. It should be treated as evidence of the 2014 process, not as a current login instruction.

Password and mail-app changes
Some users might have been required to choose a new password. Anyone using Outlook, Apple Mail, an Android mail app or another client would then need to update saved credentials and, if BT supplied new settings, the incoming and outgoing server details. The announcement did not publish a universal switchover date or one set of instructions for every account.
Other Yahoo products
BT warned that Yahoo might contact users separately about other Yahoo services associated with an account. Moving BT email to BT Mail did not automatically migrate or terminate those unrelated services.
Industry and BT business context
BT’s move came during a broader period of webmail modernisation. Microsoft was replacing Hotmail with Outlook.com, but BT’s project was different: it was an ISP moving a customer email service and portal to its own branded platform.

The 2013 report also situated the announcement in BT’s competitive broadband push. At that time, BT was reported to have more than 1.5 million customers on its high-speed broadband services and 270,000 fibre connections added in the preceding quarter. Those are point-in-time 2013 figures, not current BT statistics. The company was competing with providers including BSkyB and Virgin Media, had announced free access to its sports channels for BT Broadband customers, and planned to relaunch BT.com in June 2013.

For customers, the important distinction was between continuity of the mailbox and discontinuity of the platform. Addresses and messages were initially promised to stay, while the portal, branding, login process and potentially passwords changed. For Yahoo, the move reduced its role in a major UK internet-service-provider relationship, but the available evidence does not establish a specific user count or revenue loss.
Later events should not be confused with the original reason for the migration. BT’s 2017 annual report said records from BT mail accounts in 2013 and 2014 were included in the Yahoo breaches disclosed in 2016, and noted that some users had not changed passwords. That is retrospective security context, not evidence that the 2013 migration was caused by those breaches.

What applies to BT email now
Current BT email rules are separate from the 2013 migration promise. BT currently identifies @btinternet.com, @btopenworld.com and @talk21.com as BT email addresses. Its present support material distinguishes between active BT Broadband email, Basic email and Premium email, with retention and deletion rules that can differ from the historical migration terms. A 2013 assurance that messages would remain intact should not be read as a permanent guarantee that a mailbox can never be closed or deleted.
The Bottom Line
BT’s 2013 “Yahoo” change was a phased move from a Yahoo-supported portal and mail platform to BT Mail. Customers were initially promised the same addresses and messages, but the rollout extended into 2014 and involved new access arrangements, possible password changes and a unified BT customer portal.
