BrucePac Chicken Recall: Which Ready-to-Eat Products Were Affected?

The “over 300” BrucePac recall headline referred to pages in a product-list PDF, not a verified count of chicken products. Here’s how to check an exact package against FSIS guidance.

The “over 300” figure in headlines about the BrucePac recall referred to the length of a product-list PDF—not a verified count of 300 recalled chicken products. Announced in October 2024, the recall involved nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that may have been contaminated with Listeria. To determine whether a package is affected, match its exact details against the official FSIS recall listing; a familiar brand name alone is not enough.

What was recalled, and when?

The recall concerned ready-to-eat meat and poultry made with BrucePac products. Contemporary coverage reported that the affected items were produced from June 19 through October 8, 2024, and included prepared salads, burritos, frozen chicken meals, and other packaged meals containing chicken or deli meat. Prevention reported the total as nearly 10 million pounds in October 2024; that is a historical figure, not a current recall total. Prevention’s October 2024 report.

Products appeared under many consumer-facing brands, including Fresh Express, Dole, Trader Joe’s, Great Value, Marketside, and Amazon Fresh. A shared supplier can account for different retail brands appearing in one recall: cooked chicken or another ingredient may be incorporated into meals made and sold downstream under separate labels. The brand names reported in coverage are examples, not confirmation that every product from those brands was affected.

Does “over 300” mean 300 products?

No verified count of more than 300 individual chicken products is established by that wording. Gizmodo reported on October 15, 2024, that the FSIS product-list PDF was over 300 pages long. Page count is not product count: a long document may contain detailed entries and identifiers, and its length does not tell you how many distinct consumer products were recalled. Which chicken products were recalled?

The recall covered specific products, not every ready-to-eat chicken item or every item sold under a named brand. Reports about the USDA announcement identified establishment numbers 51205 or P-51205 inside or under the USDA mark of inspection. Those numbers can help with identification, but they do not replace checking the exact entry on the FSIS recalls and alerts page. The available reporting does not independently verify every affected SKU or whether the official list has since changed.

Was Trader Joe’s chicken recalled?

Trader Joe’s was among the brands named in contemporary coverage, but that does not mean all Trader Joe’s chicken—or all products from the retailer—were recalled. Check the official listing for the particular product and its package identifiers before deciding that it matches.

How do I know if my package is part of the recall?

  1. Open the official FSIS recalls and alerts page and locate the BrucePac recall notice and its product list.
  2. Compare the precise product name and description, brand, package size, and any lot or best-by code shown on your package with the corresponding listing entry.
  3. Check the establishment number printed inside or under the USDA mark of inspection where the listing provides one; reports cited 51205 or P-51205 for this recall.
  4. If the details do not match clearly, do not infer a match from the brand name alone. Contact the retailer or manufacturer for help identifying the item.

FSIS’s notice and linked list are the authoritative place to confirm a package. The identifiers reported in news coverage are not a substitute for the exact official entry.

What should you do with a confirmed recalled product?

Do not eat it. USDA guidance reported at the time was to discard a confirmed recalled product. Keep it away from people and pets, and follow any handling or return directions in the official notice or from the retailer.

What if you ate recalled chicken?

Eating a recalled item does not by itself mean you will become ill. CDC says people who ate recalled or outbreak-linked food and develop fever with other symptoms of listeriosis should contact a healthcare provider and mention the possible exposure. This is particularly important for pregnant people, adults 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. CDC guidance on Listeria symptoms and risk.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Invasive illness: fever, muscle aches or fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
  • Intestinal illness: diarrhea and vomiting.

Symptoms and severity vary. CDC notes that most experts believe people who ate possibly contaminated food but feel well do not need tests or treatment; anyone with questions can contact a healthcare provider.

What is known—and what the old headlines do not establish

This is a historical recall announced in October 2024, not a new recall announced in October 2026. A contemporaneous report said there were no adverse reactions associated with BrucePac products at that time; that statement describes the situation reported then, not a current case count. The product list, any later changes, and current official status should be checked through FSIS rather than inferred from 2024 coverage. Food Safety News’ October 2024 coverage.
