The right decision depends on the organization’s contract, required capabilities, infrastructure plans, and ability to manage migration risk.
What did Broadcom acquire?
The European Commission’s merger-file description says Broadcom acquired sole control of VMware. It describes VMware’s business as IT software that includes virtualization and related workload-management products for data centres and cloud computing, application-development software, and endpoint management.
That description was prepared by the parties notifying the Commission of the transaction. The Commission’s Competition Directorate-General states that it cannot be held responsible for incorrect or misleading information in that material. It is a description of the transaction and business, not a finding about the acquisition’s effects on customers.
What changed for VMware customers?
Support and account access moved to Broadcom
Broadcom says VMware Customer Connect and related support portals, services, tools, and assets moved to the Broadcom Support Portal on May 6, 2024. Broadcom’s support FAQ, updated May 20, 2026, directs customers there for accounts and Site IDs, license keys and entitlements, product downloads, support cases, education, alerts, and partner support.

Before a renewal or an urgent support need, check that the people who need access can sign in and have the right account roles, Site IDs, and entitlements. Confirm that the organization can find its license information, obtain the downloads it needs, and open a support case. Access that works for one administrator does not establish that every team member or business unit has the access it requires.
Portfolio and subscription terms need contract-level checking
A Broadcom-sponsored CCS Insight report dated October 2024 described a simplified VMware portfolio and a subscription direction. It discussed VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware vSphere Foundation, and said support for existing perpetual licenses would continue through the end of the associated support agreements. The report also discussed VCF portability across compatible endpoints.
Those statements describe a strategy and portfolio at the time of that report; they do not determine what a particular customer is entitled to buy, renew, use, or receive support for today. Product names, packaging, and terms can change. Check current official product and entitlement documentation alongside the organization’s own agreement. The available sources establish no single current price, minimum purchase, or renewal rule that applies to every customer.

How should you decide whether to renew or migrate?
Treat renewal and migration as alternatives to evaluate against the same workload requirements and time horizon—not as a simple comparison between a renewal quote and a competing platform’s headline price. Nutanix’s 2025 SEC-filed annual report says the company believes VMware by Broadcom’s portfolio, pricing, and partner-program changes led many customers to explore alternatives. That is a competitor’s characterization, not an independent count of customers leaving VMware or a forecast for any one organization.
The same filing identifies constraints that can make the timing difficult: multi-year agreements, hardware and software refresh schedules, migration and interoperability assessments, switching risks, existing investments, and contract obligations. Use these factors to structure the decision, then verify how each applies to your environment.
| Decision path | What to establish | Potential constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Renew | Whether the quoted products, support, and entitlements cover the workloads and capabilities you actually need over the chosen contract horizon. | Current price and terms depend on the organization’s offer and contract; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal renewal price or rule. |
| Remain temporarily while preparing a change | Whether contract rights, support coverage, and operational needs allow time for a measured assessment or alignment with a planned refresh. | Agreement length, expiry dates, support end dates, and refresh timing may limit flexibility. Nutanix identifies these as potential customer constraints in its 2025 annual report. |
| Migrate | Whether a candidate platform meets workload, operational, interoperability, and support requirements—and what transition and ongoing costs it creates. | Migration work, switching risk, existing investments, and contract obligations can affect feasibility and timing. Nutanix identifies these issues in its 2025 annual report. |
Compare the full cost over the same period
For each option, include more than license charges. Compare the required capabilities, support, infrastructure, transition work, and ongoing operating costs over the same contract horizon. Separate costs that are already committed from costs the decision would newly incur. Do not apply a reported price-change percentage or anecdote to your own renewal unless it matches your products, entitlements, region, contract, and quote.
Map workloads to required capabilities
List the applications and services that depend on the current environment, then identify the virtualization, storage, networking, security, management, and cloud functions each one requires. Compare those needs with the actual products under consideration, rather than comparing vendor names or broad platform descriptions. Where a dependency or requirement is unclear, treat it as an assessment task before setting a migration date.
Test interoperability and migration effort
Assess application dependencies, hardware compatibility, operating procedures, staff skills, and the work needed to move and validate workloads. Estimate how services would be maintained during cutover and what a rollback would require. The available sources identify interoperability assessment and migration as material constraints, but do not establish the effort or outcome for any particular organization.
Put the decision on the contract and refresh calendar
Review contract expiry and renewal provisions, applicable support end dates, and planned hardware or software refreshes before choosing a deadline. A multi-year agreement or a refresh already in progress can change the cost and risk of acting now versus later; neither automatically makes renewal or migration the better choice.

Include operational readiness in the comparison
Account for staff readiness, service continuity, support coverage, and the organization’s ability to manage a transition. Identify who owns the migration, how critical workloads will be tested, and what contingency is available if a change does not work as planned. These are organization-specific questions; vendor statements about customer interest in alternatives cannot answer them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you verify before a renewal or migration decision?
- Check your agreement: Confirm the products and entitlements covered, contract and renewal dates, support terms, and any obligations that could affect the timing of a change.
- Confirm portal access: In the Broadcom Support Portal, verify the relevant accounts, user roles, Site IDs, license keys, entitlements, and access to downloads and support cases.
- Get current terms for your situation: Confirm current product packaging, eligibility, pricing, and support rights against Broadcom’s official documentation and your account. Do not assume a portfolio description from October 2024 settles current terms.
- Build a workload-based comparison: Record the capabilities each workload needs and assess each real offer against that list.
- Estimate transition and operating costs: Include assessment, migration, validation, staff preparation, ongoing support, infrastructure, and continuity planning over a consistent time period.
- Choose a decision date tied to evidence: Align it with contract and refresh milestones, and make it conditional on completing the necessary compatibility and risk assessments.
What does the 2026 EU licensing case listing establish?
An EU Official Journal listing records an action brought by Broadcom and VMware International on May 6, 2026, against a Commission decision in a VMware software-licensing proceeding. The notice describes a challenge concerning the production of documents located outside the EU and certain non-EU privileged legal advice. The listing is procedural context: it is not a final ruling on the merits and does not establish a particular customer’s licensing rights or outcome.
How to use these facts in your IT strategy
The acquisition is a reason to examine VMware’s current terms and the organization’s alternatives, not a universal instruction to leave or stay. Make the decision from the actual agreement and quote, the access your teams need, the workloads and capabilities in scope, and the cost and risk of changing them on your organization’s timeline.
