British Airways Baggage Allowance: 5 Things to Know Before You Fly

British Airways baggage rules vary by fare, cabin and booking. Check the general bag limits, possible fees and special-item rules before you fly.

British Airways does not have one checked-baggage allowance for every passenger: what you can check depends on your fare, cabin and booking, and can also be affected by route, loyalty status or another airline operating part of your trip. For the exact allowance on your itinerary, check the baggage calculator or the details in Manage My Booking. The general rules below help you plan and spot potential extra charges.

1. Cabin bags: one hand bag and one cabin bag

British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer passengers may bring one hand bag and one cabin bag, including on Basic fares. The hand bag is intended to fit beneath the seat and is guaranteed to travel in the cabin. The larger cabin bag may be placed in the hold if needed.

Piece Maximum dimensions Maximum weight What to know
Hand bag 40 × 30 × 15 cm 23 kg Keep medicines, passports, phones and other essentials here; BA says the hand bag is guaranteed in the cabin.
Cabin bag 56 × 45 × 25 cm, including wheels and handles 23 kg May be put in the hold.

BA’s baggage guidance advises keeping electronic devices and essential medicines out of the cabin bag and in the hand bag instead. If you bring more than two cabin pieces, or a piece exceeds the permitted size, BA may require larger items to be checked.

2. Checked baggage depends on your fare and cabin

These are British Airways’ general published allowances, not a guarantee for every itinerary. The number of bags or applicable allowance can differ based on booking, route or Club status; a flight operated by another airline may also have different rules.

Fare or cabin General checked allowance
Economy Basic No checked bag
Economy with a checked bag 1 bag, up to 23 kg
Premium Economy 2 bags, up to 23 kg each
Business 2 bags, up to 32 kg each
First 3 bags, up to 32 kg each

Each traveller’s allowance is individual: you cannot pool or combine baggage allowances with another passenger. Check the allowance shown for your booking before deciding how to divide your belongings.

3. Check each checked bag’s weight and size

British Airways’ standard maximum checked-bag dimensions are 90 × 75 × 43 cm. The weight limit applies to each bag, not to the total weight spread across several bags. BA states that it does not accept checked bags weighing more than 32 kg.

  • Economy and Premium Economy: 23 kg per bag.
  • Business and First: 32 kg per bag.
  • Over the standard dimensions: Special handling rules may apply; see the oversize guidance below.

BA’s baggage essentials page gives the overweight charge as £65, €75, US$100 or C$100 per overweight bag, each way. These are British Airways’ published figures surfaced on 3 October 2026; local-currency conversion and local taxes may apply. Some airports accept card only for this payment. Extra-bag prices depend on destination and number of bags, and carriage is subject to availability. BA recommends adding extra bags online through Manage My Booking before check-in. A digital luggage scale can help you weigh each bag before leaving home, but it does not change the airline’s per-bag limits.

4. Children, infants and loyalty status can change the allowance

Children and infants

Children aged 2–11 generally have the same checked allowance as an accompanying adult in the same cabin, subject to the child’s ticket. A lap infant under 2 generally has one 23 kg checked bag in any cabin, except when the infant and accompanying adult are travelling on a hand-baggage-only Basic fare. An infant or child with their own seat has the adult allowance.

BA also permits up to two listed essential extras per child or infant, including items such as a fully collapsible pushchair, car or booster seat, travel cot or baby back carrier, even on Basic fares. Check the rules against the actual booking.

British Airways Club and partner-airline travel

Eligible British Airways Club Gold and Silver members, along with corresponding oneworld or AerClub tiers, may receive extra checked baggage under BA’s stated restrictions. The member must be travelling on the booking, and the described benefits do not apply to Basic fares. If another airline operates any part of the itinerary, its limits may differ, so use the allowance shown for your booking.

5. Oversize items and musical instruments need advance planning

Sports equipment and other oversize baggage

BA says oversize baggage within 190 × 75 × 65 cm is usually accepted within the checked allowance, subject to restrictions. Notify BA when booking or at least 48 hours before departure, particularly for items such as bike boxes, skis or golf bags. Some oversize items must be taken to an out-of-gauge baggage drop at least 90 minutes before departure. Items beyond BA’s maximum checked dimensions or weight must travel as cargo, according to its sports equipment guidance.

Musical instruments

For hold carriage, BA advises using a rigid protective case. A small instrument up to 80 cm may be carried instead of the second hand-baggage piece if it fits BA’s stated instrument dimensions. Instruments from 80 cm to 140 cm are not permitted as hand baggage; the options are hold baggage or a separately purchased cabin seat, subject to limits and availability. BA asks passengers to contact it in advance about larger or heavier instruments and states a 45 kg maximum for instruments it can carry. Confirm the rules for the specific instrument and journey using BA’s musical-instrument guidance.

How to confirm your allowance before departure

  1. Open the British Airways baggage calculator or sign in to Manage My Booking.
  2. Check the number of checked bags included, the weight limit for each bag and any special-item conditions shown for your itinerary.
  3. If you need an extra bag, check its price and availability for your destination, then add it online before check-in if possible.
  4. Weigh and measure every checked bag individually. If you are travelling with a partner airline, a child or infant, or an oversize item, verify that case with BA before going to the airport.

For departures from Heathrow, Gatwick, Geneva, Zurich and Vienna, BA names Airportr as a doorstep baggage collection and check-in service. Confirm airport eligibility, terms and current availability with the service before relying on it.
