It combines a large home market with growing high-tech exports and a substantial electronics trade deficit. For companies and investors, the opportunity is to build capability in telecom, IT, industrial equipment, energy systems and other areas where domestic demand is strong and imports remain important—not to assume that market size alone guarantees success.
Is Brazil becoming a technology powerhouse?
Brazil is gaining ground, though “technology powerhouse” would overstate what the available figures show. The clearest positive signal is that exports of high-technology goods grew 11.5% in 2024, the fastest growth among the industrial technology groupings reported by Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) and Agência Gov. Highlighted products included aircraft, measuring and verification instruments, communications equipment and parts, and medicines.
On 10 January 2025, Vice-President and MDIC Minister Geraldo Alckmin described the performance as evidence of “uma evolução das exportações brasileiras, com maior valor agregado”—an evolution toward exports with greater added value. That is a meaningful direction of travel, but it does not mean electronics has already become a major export strength: the sector’s 2025 imports far exceeded its exports.
The country has the scale to support further development. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) put Brazil’s 2024 GDP at US$2.179 trillion and its population at 211.999 million. Its figures for that year show merchandise exports of US$337.046 billion and imports of US$277.954 billion, a US$59.092 billion surplus. Those broad national figures establish economic scale; they should not be mistaken for electronics-sector performance.

What electronics does Brazil export, and how large is the market?
Brazil exports electronics, but it imports much more than it exports. ABINEE, the Brazilian Electrical and Electronics Industry Association, reports that the sector exported US$8.146 billion in 2025 and imported US$48.734 billion, leaving a US$40.588 billion deficit. Its figures say imports equaled 38.2% of the internal market for final goods, while exports equaled 16.7% of sector sales.
ABINEE’s 2026 panorama reports R$272.038 billion in electrical-and-electronics sales in 2025. Its sector-performance page rounds this to R$272 billion and reports 4% real growth that year. The sales figure captures a broad industry, not just consumer devices: telecommunications, industrial equipment, computers and IT, appliances, energy systems, components and other electrical and electronics activities all contribute.
For product-level export questions, the sector-wide total is only a starting point. MDIC’s Comex Stat can be used to check specific products by Harmonized System (HS) code; a broad industry aggregate and an individual customs product category do not necessarily use the same scope or denominator.

What are Brazil’s strongest electronics opportunities?
The largest 2025 sales categories in ABINEE’s 2026 panorama point to sizeable domestic demand. Their sales values are useful for comparing market scale, not as forecasts of growth or proof that the full value is available to a new entrant.

| Category | 2025 sales | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Telecommunications | R$65.615 billion | The largest listed category; a substantial market for communications equipment and related capabilities. |
| Industrial equipment | R$52.012 billion | A large base for equipment and technology supporting industrial productivity. |
| Computers and IT products | R$46.563 billion | Significant demand for computing and IT products in a market where imports are material. |
| Household appliances | R$35.010 billion | A large consumer-facing category within the broader electronics sector. |
| Generation, transmission, distribution and storage of electrical energy | R$31.659 billion | A sizeable market tied to electrical infrastructure and storage needs. |
These categories suggest three practical opportunity lenses:
- Reduce import exposure: Products, components or services that can compete with imported supply address a clear gap, although import share alone does not prove a local substitute is technically or commercially viable.
- Support infrastructure and productivity: Telecom, energy and industrial equipment combine large reported sales with needs that extend beyond consumer electronics.
- Build exportable capability: Brazil’s high-tech export growth offers evidence that higher-value exports are possible. Turning that signal into electronics exports would require product-level validation rather than assuming the broader trend applies to every electronics category.
Why does Brazil import so many electronics?
The trade figures show the scale of the gap, but they do not identify its causes product by product. They do establish that Brazil’s electronics market is more import-dependent than export-oriented: the 2025 import bill was about six times the sector’s export value, based on ABINEE’s reported figures.

That dependence exposes buyers and producers to exchange-rate, freight, tariff and supply-chain shocks. It also means market demand does not automatically translate into domestic production: companies must assess whether local capacity, inputs, financing and commercial conditions support a competitive offer. ABINEE’s figure that imports represented 38.2% of the internal market for final goods is a specific measure of that exposure, not a claim that 38.2% of every electronics product is imported.
Keep the national trade series distinct as well. MDIC reports 2024 goods exports of US$337.0462 billion and imports of US$262.8696 billion; for 2025, it reports exports of US$348.2785 billion and imports of US$280.2084 billion, yielding a US$68.0700 billion surplus. UNCTAD’s 2024 figures instead report imports of US$277.954 billion and a US$59.092 billion balance, alongside exports of US$337.046 billion. Because the 2024 import values differ, do not combine the two sources’ figures into one year-on-year series; their reported scopes or statistical treatments are not established here.

Can companies manufacture electronics in Brazil?
The market size and import gap make local manufacturing a credible question, not a guarantee of a good investment. ABINEE’s figures demonstrate demand and import exposure at sector level; they do not establish the viability, costs, tax treatment or expected returns of a particular factory or product.

A company evaluating production should test its case at product level before committing capital:
- Define the product and trade category. Use MDIC Comex Stat and the relevant HS code to examine the product’s trade pattern rather than relying only on the electronics-sector aggregate.
- Validate the addressable market. Separate expected sales in Brazil from export prospects, and check whether the relevant buyer segment matches the broad category data.
- Model import and input exposure. Identify which components or equipment would still depend on imported supply, then test the business case against exchange-rate, freight and supply-chain changes.
- Check policy and financing conditions directly. Confirm eligibility, local-content rules, tax treatment, application requirements and execution timelines for any incentive or financing program before including it in projected economics.
- Stress-test execution risk. ABINEE’s 2025 business-confidence index was 48.5; the association defines readings above 50 as confidence. This cautious signal matters alongside, rather than instead of, market demand.
New Industry Brazil, launched in 2024, is a federal policy described by BNDES as aiming to modernize industry through 2033. BNDES’s 2024 annual report also describes financing and connectivity initiatives relevant to technology-intensive sectors. The policy context may support investment, but it is not evidence that any particular company or project qualifies for funding.

ABINEE’s 2026 survey found that 72% of respondents expected sales or orders to grow, 72% intended to invest and 67% intended to hire. These are survey expectations and intentions, not measured outcomes or guarantees of sector-wide expansion.

Read those responses alongside the 48.5 business-confidence index for 2025. Because ABINEE’s threshold for confidence is above 50, the index indicates caution even as many respondents reported positive plans. For a decision-maker, the combination says that expansion interest exists, but confidence in the operating environment remains a relevant constraint.
Which Brazilian industries are growing globally?
The strongest evidence in the figures here is export growth in high-technology goods overall, not a ranking of every Brazilian industry. MDIC and Agência Gov report 11.5% growth in those exports in 2024 and identify aircraft, measuring and verification instruments, communications equipment and parts, and medicines among the highlighted products.
That mix shows why Brazil’s global technology profile should not be reduced to consumer electronics. It includes several higher-value sectors, while electronics combines broad domestic sales with a large trade deficit. Companies assessing a global opportunity should distinguish Brazil’s ability to export selected high-tech products from the separate question of whether a specific electronics product can be produced competitively for domestic or foreign buyers.
