Braintree’s Bitcoin Offer Was a 2015 Private Beta—not a Current Feature

Braintree’s 2015 Bitcoin announcement was a private beta for U.S. v.zero merchants using a Coinbase integration—not a current promise of Bitcoin support across Braintree.

The headline refers to a real announcement, but not a current Braintree-wide feature. On January 22, 2015, VentureBeat reported that Braintree had opened a private beta for U.S. merchants using its v.zero SDK to accept Bitcoin through a Coinbase integration. Bitcoin is not listed among the payment methods in Braintree’s current documentation reviewed on August 16, 2026. That omission does not establish exactly when or how the historical integration ended, but merchants should not assume it is available today.

What Braintree announced in 2015

VentureBeat’s January 22, 2015, article described private-beta access—not an unrestricted launch for every U.S. business. The feature was for merchants integrating Braintree’s v.zero SDK, and it built on Braintree’s September 2014 announcement of a partnership with Coinbase. Braintree also named GitHub, Jane.com, ParkWhiz, and Chargify as v.zero users; those historical examples do not establish that those companies accepted Bitcoin through the integration, or that they remain customers today.

VentureBeat’s original report and Braintree’s Coinbase partnership announcement describe Bitcoin acceptance as part of an integrated checkout arrangement. The evidence supports calling it a partner integration, not a standalone Braintree Bitcoin payment rail.

What “all U.S. merchants” did—and did not—mean

The headline’s “all” needs the article’s private-beta qualification. A merchant needed to use or integrate v.zero and obtain access to the beta; the headline did not mean every U.S. business automatically had a Bitcoin option in its account. Nor did it establish worldwide availability, eligibility for every business category, or that Braintree itself held Bitcoin for merchants.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

The available announcements do not establish the operational terms merchants would need to rely on: settlement currency, fees, exchange rates, refund mechanics, confirmation requirements, or dispute protections. “Accept Bitcoin” alone does not tell a merchant whether it would retain BTC or receive another form of proceeds. Those details should not be inferred from the headline.

How the historical arrangement fit together

At a high level, the 2015 concept connected a Bitcoin payment option in a Braintree v.zero checkout with Coinbase’s Bitcoin-related services. Braintree supplied the broader merchant payment integration; Coinbase was the named Bitcoin partner. This is a conceptual description of the historical announcement, not a verified description of a live system today.

  1. The merchant integrated Braintree’s v.zero SDK and sought access to the private beta.
  2. The checkout could offer Bitcoin as an additional payment option.
  3. The integration involved Coinbase for the Bitcoin-related processing relationship.
  4. The merchant handled the transaction within its broader payment workflow.

The announcements do not document enough to specify settlement, refunds, customer wallet flows, or transaction confirmation rules. Merchants considering any crypto checkout should get those terms in writing rather than treating the phrase “accept Bitcoin” as a complete description of how money moves.

What Braintree documents now

Braintree’s current payment-method documentation, reviewed on August 16, 2026, lists cards, PayPal, ACH Direct Debit, digital wallets, and local payment methods, among other options; it does not list Bitcoin or Coinbase as a Braintree payment method. Availability of listed methods can depend on account, geography, processor settings, and approval. For example, the documentation says Visa Click to Pay support ended January 20, 2026.

The current U.S. Braintree Payment Services Agreement, last updated March 2, 2026, describes services broadly and subjects merchant use to eligibility and risk, legal, regulatory, and network controls. It does not identify Bitcoin as a guaranteed standard method. Taken together, these sources support a limited conclusion: Bitcoin is not presented in current Braintree documentation as an available standard payment method. They do not prove the precise date or mechanism by which the old beta may have ended, so it would be too strong to say from these sources alone that Braintree formally banned or discontinued it.

PayPal Pay with Crypto is a separate product

PayPal now documents Pay with Crypto, a service for eligible U.S. merchants accepting crypto payments from global buyers. PayPal says crypto conversion is near-instant and merchant payout follows PayPal’s normal funding schedule. This is a PayPal product; its existence does not establish that every Braintree merchant can use it or that it is the continuation of the 2015 Braintree/Coinbase beta.

What merchants should verify before building

Do not build against a decade-old headline or assume an old v.zero example still works. Before offering crypto checkout, confirm the product and its terms directly with the provider.

  • Is the feature available for your particular account, business category, and location?
  • Is it offered through Braintree, PayPal Pay with Crypto, or another separately contracted provider?
  • Which customer locations, wallets, and crypto assets are supported?
  • Are proceeds settled in fiat or crypto, and what conversion rate, timing, and fees apply?
  • How are refunds handled, including the refund denomination and exchange-rate movement?
  • What happens with delayed, underpaid, or unconfirmed transactions, and what dispute or fraud controls apply?
  • Does the current SDK/API support the intended flow, and does the merchant agreement cover it?
  • What records will be available for accounting and tax reporting?

Braintree’s documented method list, your account’s control panel, current SDK/API documentation, written confirmation from Braintree or PayPal support, and the applicable merchant agreement are more reliable bases for a build decision than the 2015 beta report.
