Its supply chain runs from a small number of geographically concentrated deposits through mining and refining to products such as borax, boric acid and boron oxide. That concentration matters to industrial buyers because ore, refined products and product specifications are not interchangeable—and supply concentration alone does not prove a shortage or predict a price change.
What moves through the boron supply chain?
The chain is best understood as a sequence: deposit and mineralogy, extraction, processing, product specification, then transport to customers. Boron is commonly recovered from borate-bearing minerals and brines; it is not ordinarily mined as elemental boron. The resulting products include borax, boric acid, boron oxide and other borates.
“Borax” is a particular refined borate, not a synonym for every boron product. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identifies borax as sodium tetraborate decahydrate and says it occurs naturally as the mineral tincal. Eti Maden, Turkey’s state-owned producer, lists borax pentahydrate and decahydrate among its products. Retail borax powder is one downstream form; it should not be treated as a stand-in for the industrial materials, grades or specifications used throughout the supply chain.
Products also differ in chemistry and physical form. USGS notes that boron products are often compared on a boron-oxide basis, while sodium and calcium content also matter. For a buyer, a material’s grade, impurities, form and compatibility with the downstream process can be as important as the word “boron” on a product description.

Where are borate deposits found?
Commercially important deposits are unevenly distributed. USGS associates borate deposits with volcanic activity and arid climates, and identifies the Mojave Desert near Boron, California, the Alpide belt through southern Asia, and the Andean belt of South America as areas containing the largest economically viable deposits. Deposits also occur in parts of southern Asia.
The United States and Turkey are the world’s largest boron producers, according to USGS’s National Minerals Information Center. USGS identifies California as the only U.S. state with production. In Turkey, its country report names three main deposit areas:
- Emet: colemanite, ulexite and probertite.
- Kirka: tincal.
- Bigadic: colemanite and ulexite.
In the USGS country report’s 2024 reserve distribution for Turkey, Emet accounted for 56%, Kirka 25% and Bigadic 19%. These are shares of Turkey’s reported boron reserves, not shares of global production.

How does ore become a product customers can use?
Extraction depends on the deposit
USGS describes U.S. production as drawing on surface mines, underground mines, in situ production and brine. The available method depends on the deposit and the material being recovered; there is no single extraction route that applies to every source.
Processing turns different feedstocks into different products
Ore chemistry determines what processing can produce. Eti Maden lists borax pentahydrate and decahydrate, boric acid, Etidot-67, boron oxide, zinc borate, calcined tincal, anhydrous borax, ground colemanite and ground ulexite. These products serve different industrial needs, so a mine’s output is not automatically a substitute for a specified refined product.
Refining capacity is therefore a distinct part of supply from having ore or reporting mine output. To compare suppliers meaningfully, distinguish the material and chemistry, grade and physical form, the stage being measured (mine output, refined capacity or actual sales), location and logistics, and the year and basis used for the figures.

How concentrated is supply?
USGS describes the United States and Turkey as the largest producing countries. Turkey’s 2024 figures show why it is important to distinguish a country’s mine production from its refined output and from a company’s sales:
| Measure | Reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey run-of-mine boron production | 5.95 million metric tonnes in 2024 | USGS 2026 country report; run-of-mine material, not refined-product tonnes. |
| Turkey refined-borate production | 2.35 million metric tonnes in 2024 | USGS 2026 country report; refined borates, a different measure from run-of-mine output. |
| Eti Maden refined-borate market share | 61% in 2024 | USGS 2026 country report, attributing the share to Eti Maden. |
| Eti Maden borate sales | 2.5 million tonnes worth $1.32 billion in 2024 | USGS 2026 country report; company sales, not total global sales. |
| Rio Tinto California operation’s share of global refined-borate demand | Approximately 30% | Rio Tinto’s undated company product page; a company-reported approximation, not directly comparable with Eti Maden’s 2024 market-share figure. |
USGS cautions that differing forms of boron make some country-to-country production shares difficult to state precisely. The figures above therefore should not be combined as if they measured the same thing: tonnes of run-of-mine material, refined output, company sales and a company-reported share of demand have different bases.

The reported export destinations were Asia (63%), Europe (20%) and the Americas (16%). Those percentages describe Eti Maden’s exports, not all global borate trade.

Why does this matter to manufacturers and households?
Concentrated deposits and processing capacity can make supply more exposed to events affecting particular producers, facilities or transport routes. A country may have ore without producing every refined product locally, and a customer may need a specific grade or form rather than any borate. That creates practical sourcing questions for industrial buyers: whether a qualified alternative exists, how much refining occurs near the mine, and how dependent a product is on one producer or route.
This structure is relevant to costs across industries, but the available production and market-share figures do not establish a current shortage, a particular price direction or a direct effect on household prices. Those outcomes depend on factors beyond concentration, including product specifications and actual market conditions.
USGS’s Mineral Commodity Summaries 2025: Boron reported that a California facility began producing boric acid in April 2024 and was expected to focus on specialty products relevant to defense, electric transportation, food security and decarbonization. That is the status and expectation reported in the 2025 summary; it does not, by itself, establish the facility’s current operating status.

What industries use borates?
Rio Tinto’s company overview lists applications including glass and fiberglass, ceramics, flame retardants, detergents, wood protection, fertilizers, nuclear energy, batteries and capacitors. The list shows how borates connect to several materials and process industries; it is not a ranking by market size, and not every boron product is suitable for every use.
For procurement or supply analysis, the useful question is not simply “Where does boron come from?” It is which mineral or brine feeds the product, where that product is refined, what specification the customer needs, and how concentrated the qualified supply is.
