Boeing has not confirmed an aircraft officially called the 797, or said that a new airplane would be built in Washington. The company’s latest located public statement on a potential future airplane, dated September 30, 2025, described continued market and technology evaluation—not a program launch or a production-site decision. Boeing’s July 2026 announcement about Everett concerns a 737 production line, not a 797.
Is Boeing building a 797?
No announced 797 program is established by the available Boeing and Reuters statements. On September 30, 2025, Boeing spokesperson Ryan Cudney said the company was evaluating the market and advancing technologies so it would be ready to move forward with a new product “when the time is right.” The statement described preparation and evaluation; it did not name an airplane, announce a launch, or provide a schedule.
The name “797” should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as Boeing’s official model or program designation. The evidence summarized here does not establish whether Boeing made a later announcement after September 2025.
Will a Boeing 797 be built in Washington?
There is no confirmed production location to report. Boeing has not named Washington—or any other state—as the site for a 797 in the statements covered here. Without an announced aircraft program and a site decision, claims that it “will be built in Washington” go beyond what the evidence supports.

What happened to Boeing’s New Midsize Airplane?
Boeing previously explored a New Midsize Airplane, or NMA, concept aimed at a market position between existing aircraft categories. In January 2020, then-CEO Dave Calhoun said the company would start again “with a clean sheet of paper” and assess what airplane the market needed. Reuters described the earlier NMA plans as effectively shelved in their then-current form.
That reassessment was not confirmation that a new NMA had entered production planning. Boeing’s later 2025 statement referred generally to evaluating the market and technologies for a future product; it did not revive the NMA under a confirmed name or specify its design, timing, or manufacturing site.

Is the 797 the same as the NMA?
Not on the evidence available here. The 2020 reporting discusses the NMA, while Boeing’s 2025 statement refers generically to a possible future product. Neither establishes “797” as the official name of the NMA or of a successor airplane. Treating the terms as interchangeable would imply a confirmed program identity that Boeing has not announced in these statements.

In July 2026, Boeing announced the opening of its Everett North Line for 737 production. That is evidence of a Washington production investment for the 737 program only. It does not show that a different, unannounced airplane would be built at Everett or elsewhere in Washington.
