It is a company-wide set of initiatives using computational biology, artificial intelligence, data engineering and analytics across drug research, production, digital health and commercial operations. Public company reports show concrete projects and planned capabilities, but they do not provide an independent, enterprise-wide measurement of adoption or financial impact.
How is Boehringer Ingelheim using AI and data?
Boehringer Ingelheim says it is integrating computational biology, artificial intelligence and data excellence throughout pharmaceutical research and development. The stated aim is to combine human data, in-silico modelling and advanced analytics to connect therapeutic targets with disease, support patient selection and inform safety assessment.
That description refers to a capability spanning the innovation pipeline, not to a single software product. The public evidence also comes from different years and business functions, so each initiative needs to be read in its original context.
The main strands of the digital journey
Research data, biobanks and computational drug discovery
In its 2022 Group Management Report, Boehringer Ingelheim described work with biomedical data-analytics provider Lifebit on a scalable data, analytics and infrastructure platform. The intended use was to bring findings from large external biobanks into research workflows and accelerate drug development.

The same report described a grant programme with the University of Tübingen exploring artificial-intelligence and data-science methods for human and animal health. That report is historical evidence of the programme’s description in 2022; it does not establish that the programme remains active or quantify outcomes.
Production-process analytics
The 2018 annual report discussed Smart Process Design, a collaboration between biopharmaceutical production specialists and BI X data experts. The team was developing and testing a prototype focused on fermentation, using data analysis and modelling to identify improved production processes.
This was an initiative and a hypothesis about how analytics could improve manufacturing, not evidence that an end-to-end optimisation system had been completed. Project owner Dr Jochen Gerlach summarised the intended relationship between expertise and automation: “The best approach is for people and computers to research together.”
Digital therapeutics and software medical devices
Boehringer Ingelheim’s 2022 report described a second digital-health application being developed with Click Therapeutics for schizophrenia. It could potentially be used on its own or alongside drug therapy, but the report does not establish regulatory status, commercial availability or clinical effectiveness.
Rank #2
- Simple to Use Without a Subscription: No Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cords or PC needed. Place the device near your smartphone. Monitor your heart by placing your fingers or thumbs on the silver KardiaMobile EKG sensors. Know in 30 seconds whether your heart rhythm is normal.
The report also said BI X was expanding capabilities for software medical devices and developing digital-health products. BI X therefore appears in the public record as an internal digital-innovation and data-science organisation supporting multiple use cases, rather than as a consumer app or standalone product line.
Stroke rehabilitation in China
The 2022 report said the Consanas Cloud platform had recently launched in the Chinese market to support stroke patients and relatives with digital diagnosis and rehabilitation methods. That statement describes the platform’s status at the time of reporting; it should not be treated as proof of current availability in China or elsewhere.
Commercial-data modernisation with IQVIA
On January 29, 2026, IQVIA announced that Boehringer Ingelheim had selected its Data-as-a-Service (DaaS+) offering. The announced collaboration is intended to harmonise global commercial data and scale data products and analytics across therapeutic areas and regional teams.
IQVIA said the planned scope includes harmonised market, brand and franchise reporting across 59 countries. This is a stated implementation scope, not a measurement of benefits already delivered. Justin Gale, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Global Head of Data Excellence, said the company was “excited about the possibilities” of the DaaS+ platform. He described the goal as seamless ingestion of global commercial datasets into a unified platform integrated with Boehringer Ingelheim’s cloud infrastructure, which the company believes could create efficiencies in data operations and enable advanced analytics and new decision-making use cases.

What “data excellence” means in practice
Across these strands, data work serves several different decisions:
- Scientific decisions: which targets and disease mechanisms merit investigation, and which patients may be most relevant for a therapy.
- Development decisions: how computational evidence, human data and safety information can be assembled around a candidate molecule.
- Manufacturing decisions: how fermentation and other process variables might be modelled to identify better production conditions.
- Patient-care decisions: how software could support diagnosis, rehabilitation or treatment alongside medicines.
- Commercial decisions: how harmonised market and brand data can support reporting, analytics and regional planning.
The common thread is decision support. The public material does not show that every proposed use has reached the same level of deployment, validation or governance.

Evidence of ambition and implementation
Company reports and the 2026 IQVIA announcement establish that Boehringer Ingelheim has pursued data-intensive projects in research, manufacturing, digital health and commercial operations. They also show a progression from historical prototypes and applications in development to a newly announced commercial-data collaboration.

Limits on claims about results
The available public statements do not independently demonstrate enterprise-wide adoption, clinical benefit, manufacturing savings, revenue growth or a completed global data architecture. Announced objectives and company-reported activities are not the same as independently measured transformation outcomes.
A separate statistic in Boehringer Ingelheim’s 2021 annual report said that 84% of people with mental illnesses who owned a smartphone were willing to download an app that helps with their condition. The report excerpt does not identify the survey organisation, sample size, geography or field dates, so this should be read as a company-reported survey finding rather than a population-wide adoption rate.
Why the IQVIA collaboration matters
The IQVIA announcement is the latest specifically dated example in the public record reviewed here. Its focus is commercial data harmonisation rather than laboratory research or a patient app. A unified, cloud-connected data layer could make market, brand and franchise reporting more consistent across regions, while giving analytics teams a common basis for new use cases.
Whether those benefits occur depends on execution: data quality, common definitions, integration with local systems, access controls, privacy requirements and sustained adoption by regional teams. The announcement states the intended scope and expected benefits, but not realised performance.

Bottom line for readers
Boehringer Ingelheim’s digital journey is best understood as a portfolio of connected capabilities, not a single transformation launch. Its public examples span biobank analytics, AI research, fermentation modelling, digital therapeutics, stroke rehabilitation and a 2026 IQVIA commercial-data programme covering a planned 59 countries. The direction is clear; the scale and business impact remain only partly visible in public evidence.
