Re:

Blue Origin Has Not Bought ULA: What a Possible Deal Could Mean for SpaceX

No Blue Origin-ULA acquisition has been confirmed. Boeing and Lockheed Martin remain equal owners, while the companies’ engine partnership and national-security launch awards explain why a possible deal could matter to SpaceX.

Blue Origin has not bought United Launch Alliance (ULA), and no signed or active acquisition was publicly confirmed in the latest status review, dated July 20, 2026. Boeing and Lockheed Martin still owned ULA in equal 50% shares. A future sale remains possible, but the reported sale process appeared stalled or dormant—not completed.

Why Blue Origin is connected to ULA

The companies already have a significant supplier relationship. ULA says it and Blue Origin established a long-term partnership and teaming arrangement, and jointly funded development of an engine compatible with ULA’s future launch-vehicle needs and Blue Origin systems. Two Blue Origin BE-4 engines power the first stage of ULA’s Vulcan rocket.

That relationship could give Blue Origin an industrial reason to consider ULA, but it is not evidence of a purchase agreement. The distinction matters: supplying a critical component is different from owning the launch company, its contracts, or its operations.

Why a deal could put pressure on SpaceX

The strongest strategic case for a deal is the combination of Blue Origin’s emerging heavy-lift capability with ULA’s government-launch infrastructure and national-security work. That combination could make Blue Origin a stronger competitor for government missions. It is a potential effect of a hypothetical acquisition, not a reported transaction fact.

National-security launch awards show why the comparison matters. Reuters reported in 2025 that Space Force Phase 3 Lane 2 awards covered roughly 54 missions through 2029:

Provider Missions awarded Award value
SpaceX 28 $5.9 billion
ULA 19 $5.3 billion
Blue Origin 7 $2.3 billion

Reuters reported that Falcon 9 was launching at a far higher rate than ULA and Blue Origin at the time of those awards. ULA CEO Tory Bruno said the company was “very pleased to be awarded 40 percent of the Phase 3 procurement.” That quoted procurement share is not the same measure as the mission counts in the table.

What ULA’s financial and operating position could mean

Ars Technica reported that ULA’s inflation-adjusted shareholder equity, or book value, fell from approximately $2.28 billion in 2016 to $1.11 billion in 2025. The same report described an approximately 80-mission Vulcan and Atlas V backlog. Book value and backlog provide context for a possible sale, but neither figure by itself establishes a company’s sale price or the profitability and timing of its future launches.

Execution is also central. Ars identified Vulcan’s return-to-flight execution as a near-term test. Boeing’s and Lockheed Martin’s 2026 filings continued to show their equal ownership, and the July 2026 status analysis warned that Vulcan launch interruptions could affect ULA’s financial condition and require owner support. Those risks would matter to any prospective buyer evaluating the business, but the available reporting does not establish a valuation or sale terms.

How to tell whether the story has materially changed

A headline about a possible sale is not the same as a completed ownership change. To assess whether a future deal would materially alter competition with SpaceX, watch four distinct questions:

  • Ownership certainty: Has a buyer and seller announced an agreement, and has it closed? Until then, Boeing and Lockheed Martin remain ULA’s owners.
  • Launch capability and cadence: Can Blue Origin and ULA execute launches reliably and at a pace that supports additional missions? A partnership or combined ownership alone does not demonstrate that capability.
  • National-security contract position: Do future awards change the relative mission and dollar shares among SpaceX, ULA, and Blue Origin?
  • Vulcan execution and finances: Do launch interruptions, return-to-flight performance, and any need for owner support change ULA’s ability to deliver its backlog?

For now, the evidence supports treating a Blue Origin-ULA combination as a possible competitive development—not an announced takeover or an established change to SpaceX’s position.
