Recommended Free Tools
Bitwarden announced on January 21, 2026 that its individual Premium plan now costs $19.80 per year (shown as $1.65 per month when billed annually). Families costs $47.88 per year for up to six users. The individual price is roughly double the long-standing $10 annual rate cited by users and community posts, but that comparison does not apply to every subscriber or legacy billing history. Bitwarden Free remains available with unlimited passwords and devices.
The change combines a substantial price increase with new or expanded security features. Whether Premium is worth renewing depends on whether you use encrypted attachments, the integrated authenticator, emergency access, enhanced reports or the newer protection tools.
What changed in Bitwarden’s plans
Bitwarden enhanced its paid plans and changed their annual prices. The displayed monthly figures are annual-subscription equivalents, not necessarily month-to-month rates. Prices below are in U.S. dollars, based on annual billing, and exclude taxes. See Bitwarden’s current plan details at Bitwarden’s pricing page.
| Plan | Current price | Billing basis | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No charge | Unlimited logins and devices |
| Premium | $1.65/month equivalent | $19.80 annually | One account |
| Families | $3.99/month equivalent | $47.88 annually | Up to six users |
The commonly cited former Families price was $40 annually, making the new $47.88 price roughly a 20% increase rather than a doubling. Historical prices and legacy plans can vary, so an individual account’s renewal history is more reliable than a headline comparison.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
New and expanded Premium features
- Vault health alerts: Reports identify weak, reused or exposed passwords so you can prioritize replacements. They do not change passwords on the affected services automatically. Details are documented at Bitwarden’s reports guide.
- Password coaching: In-context prompts guide users toward stronger credentials. This is most useful for people working through a large backlog or who want help while changing passwords.
- Phishing blocker: The January announcement called this feature “coming soon.” A March 18, 2026 Bitwarden article describes checking a phishing database and requiring extra confirmation before opening a known phishing site. Bitwarden has not established in the supplied material a universal rollout date, complete platform matrix or full false-positive policy. It can help with known malicious domains, but it cannot identify every newly registered or lookalike site. See Bitwarden’s phishing explanation.
- Encrypted attachments: Storage increased fivefold, from 1 GB to 5 GB. It can hold backup codes, identity documents and other sensitive files, but it is supplemental encrypted storage, not a complete backup system.
- Security keys: The account limit increased twofold to 10. The limit covers supported hardware keys, native biometrics and passkeys used for two-step or passkey login; compatibility still varies by device, browser and authentication method.
What existing subscribers should expect
Bitwarden said the higher price applies at renewal rather than necessarily immediately. Its stated policy is to provide 15 days’ notice before renewal. Existing Premium customers and eligible legacy “Families 2019” customers were promised a one-time 25% loyalty discount on the first renewal at the new rate. The discount is not an annual entitlement.
As an illustration, $19.80 multiplied by 75% equals $14.85 before tax. That is a calculation, not a guaranteed invoice: eligibility, currency, tax, legacy-plan treatment and the billing channel can change the amount. Apple App Store and Google Play subscriptions may display different tax-inclusive totals.
Some users reported learning about the change through Bitwarden’s blog or community forums, while Bitwarden stated that renewal notices would be sent 15 days in advance. Individual notification experiences do not establish a universal failure or success rate.

What remains free
Bitwarden’s Free plan still covers the core password-manager job:
- Unlimited passwords and devices.
- Passkey management, password generation and autofill.
- Zero-knowledge encryption.
- Sharing with one other user.
- Data-breach scanning and two-step login.
- Limited hardware-security-key support.
- Bitwarden Send and email-alias integrations, according to the current personal-plan comparison at Bitwarden’s personal plans page.
Premium adds the integrated authenticator (TOTP), encrypted file storage, emergency access, expanded reports, priority support, secure file sharing and a higher security-key allowance. Someone who only needs cross-device storage, autofill and syncing may not need to pay.
Who gets real value from Premium?
Basic individual user
Stay on Free if you do not need attachments, emergency access or Bitwarden’s authenticator and are comfortable reviewing weak or reused passwords yourself. Paying solely because the plan was enhanced is not necessary.

Security-focused user
Premium is easier to justify if you want guided remediation, expanded reports, emergency access or phishing-related protection as it becomes available. The tools identify problems; you still must change passwords at the underlying websites and maintain recovery methods.
User storing sensitive documents
The move from 1 GB to 5 GB matters if you keep backup codes, insurance records or identity documents in Bitwarden. Treat the feature as secure supplemental storage and keep an independent, tested backup for irreplaceable files.

Household
Families can be the stronger value when two or more people need paid features. At $47.88 annually for six places, the simple full-capacity calculation is about $7.98 per user per year before taxes. A solo customer who does not need organization features should not buy Families.

Compare standard renewal prices and included services rather than temporary introductory offers. 1Password lists Individual at $2.99 per month and Families at $4.49 per month when billed annually, with a 14-day trial, at its personal pricing page. It emphasizes polished family administration, vault sharing and Watchtower alerts.
Dashlane’s personal pricing page lists paid Premium and Friends & Family plans with unlimited devices and passwords, secure sharing, dark-web monitoring, phishing alerts and VPN functionality, but the supplied page does not provide a reliable numeric price. Do not compare it with Bitwarden on an unverified figure.

Before you cancel, downgrade or switch
- Open your Bitwarden account and record the current plan and next renewal date.
- Check the displayed renewal total, including tax and currency.
- Review Premium-only attachments and move anything you will no longer be able to access.
- Check whether Bitwarden’s authenticator is generating codes for any account.
- Review emergency-access contacts, waiting periods and permissions.
- Export your vault or prepare the supported migration process before deleting or downgrading.
- Test the destination password manager, including imports, autofill and family sharing, before closing Bitwarden.
- Keep recovery codes and spare security keys accessible throughout the change.
The decision
Bitwarden Free remains compelling for password storage, autofill, passkeys and syncing. Premium is still inexpensive relative to major paid competitors, but the percentage increase is large for customers coming from the old $10 rate. Renew if you will use the authenticator, encrypted attachments, emergency access, enhanced reports or the added security capacity. Downgrade if those features are irrelevant. For two or more household members, Families may cost less than separate Premium subscriptions. Switch only after accounting for migration work, attachments, authenticator data, emergency access and the destination service’s renewal price.
