Bitcoin Suddenly Plunges: What the September 24 Sell-Off Shows

A September 24 report put Bitcoin's pullback, low and long liquidations in context—and explains why those figures do not establish a crash or its cause.

Bitcoin fell sharply from around $87,000 to below $84,000 in the session covered by a September 24, 2026 report, then traded unevenly and briefly reached about $82,873. The report also counted more than $80 million in Bitcoin long liquidations. Those figures show a fast pullback and pressure on leveraged bullish positions—not proof that panic selling caused the move or that a broader crash had begun.

What happened to Bitcoin on September 24?

Bitcoin.com News reported on September 24, 2026, that Bitcoin had dropped from around $87,000 to just under $84,000 during the preceding session. It later traded choppily, with a reported low near $82,873 and a recovery toward $84,000. The report put Bitcoin’s month-to-date gain at just over 6% at publication time. These are dated market snapshots, not live prices; prices can vary by venue and time.

The figures describe a sharp retreat, but the cited report did not establish a definitive trigger. Calling it “panic selling” goes beyond what the price move and liquidation tally alone demonstrate.

What do the liquidation numbers tell us?

Bitcoin.com News said more than $80 million in Bitcoin long positions were liquidated, out of $110 million in total liquidated leveraged positions. A long position benefits when price rises; when the market moves against a leveraged long far enough, the exchange or platform may forcibly close it to limit losses. The concentration in long liquidations is consistent with downside pressure on bullish traders.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

It does not prove liquidations started the decline. Liquidation totals aggregate forced closures over a time window; they may reflect a price move already underway and can also add selling pressure as positions are closed. The September 24 report gives totals, but does not settle the sequence or identify a cause.

Why was the move difficult to read?

A rapid rebound came first

The decline followed a volatile stretch rather than a one-way market. The Block reported that Bitcoin briefly rose above $85,000 on September 21 after trading near $75,000 on September 15. It cited CoinGlass data showing $648.3 million in crypto short liquidations within more than $750 million in total crypto liquidations over 24 hours. That episode illustrates how quickly leveraged positions on either side can be squeezed; it does not explain the later September 24 drop.

Earlier September catalysts belong to earlier episodes

A Bitfinex Alpha update said Bitcoin closed September 15 at $75,702, down 3.2% that day, and linked that session’s pressure to macro concerns, weaker ETF flows, short-term-holder distribution, bond-market weakness, and news that the CLARITY Act had failed to advance. It characterized derivatives liquidations as reflecting the move rather than causing it. Those attributions concern September 15 and should not be carried over as an explanation for September 24.

Likewise, a separate Bitcoin.com News report dated September 10 connected an earlier decline to a U.S. Producer Price Index increase and interest-rate expectations, and cited $562 million in market-wide liquidations. It is context for a different session, not evidence of the September 24 catalyst.

What were traders watching next?

The September 24 report described two competing chart interpretations, not established outcomes:

  • Bullish interpretation: some traders looked for a move above $86,000 as a sign of renewed strength.
  • Bearish interpretation: the report described attention to the $80,000–$82,000 area and a possible confirmed break below $80,000.

These levels were reported analyst views at that time. A price touching a level does not by itself confirm a scenario, and the report did not provide a reliable forecast or a settled time horizon. Treat them as snapshots of market commentary rather than targets or guarantees.

How much volatility is normal for Bitcoin?

There is no fixed amount of volatility that makes a decline a crash. A dated risk disclosure offers perspective: a Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Form 10-Q filed June 30, 2026 reported that Bitcoin fell 32.43% from $87,463.03 on December 31, 2025, to $59,101.49 on June 30, 2026. The filing also gave average annualized one-year trailing volatility of 64.02% over the preceding ten years. These are historical figures for the stated periods, not a measure of today’s price or a prediction of the next move.

The same filing described a 77% drawdown in the 2021–2022 cycle, from a peak of $67,734 to a low of $15,632. It also said Bitcoin lost approximately 14% in mid-October 2025 amid wider digital-asset market turmoil, which some observers widely attributed to global trade tensions; liquidations across various digital-asset collateral reached as much as $20 billion. That figure was not Bitcoin-only liquidations, and the filing’s language preserves uncertainty around the attribution.

“The trading prices of many digital assets, including bitcoin, have experienced extreme volatility in recent periods and may continue to do so.”

— Bitwise Bitcoin ETF, SEC-filed Form 10-Q, risk factors section.

What can and cannot be concluded about a crash?

The available account supports three conclusions: Bitcoin made a sharp pullback from around $87,000; leveraged long positions were forcibly closed in substantial reported amounts; and near-term chart readings were uncertain. It does not establish that a market-wide crash was underway or identify a definitive macroeconomic, regulatory, ETF-flow, whale-sale, or exchange-failure cause for this particular move.

For a personal-finance decision, distinguish the market risk from custody risk. The SEC filing warns that loss, theft, or compromise of private keys can permanently deprive an owner of Bitcoin. Secure custody practices address access to the asset; they do not prevent price declines or protect a leveraged position from liquidation.
