Bitcoin (BTC) is quoted at approximately $84,410.17 per BTC, based on CoinGecko’s snapshot retrieved at . The same snapshot shows a 24-hour range of about $82,941.39 to $84,843.17 and roughly $23.02 billion in 24-hour trading volume. Treat this as a timestamped reference—not a guaranteed execution price—because Bitcoin trades continuously across independent markets.

Why there is no single Bitcoin price

Bitcoin.org states that “There is no single official Bitcoin price.” Bitcoin trades on many independent exchanges and markets, each with its own buyers, sellers, liquidity, order book and local-currency conversion. Bitcoin.org’s displayed figure is an aggregated market price powered by CoinGecko, with Blockchain.com as an automatic fallback.

An aggregate index is useful for reference, but it is not necessarily the price at which your order will fill. An exchange’s executable price depends on whether you place a market or limit order, the available liquidity and the size of the trade.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How to compare BTC quotes correctly

When two services show different numbers, compare the following details rather than assuming one is wrong:

  • Timestamp and currency: Confirm when the quote was captured and whether it is BTC/USD, BTC/USDT or another conversion.
  • Methodology: Determine whether the figure is an aggregated index, a last-traded price or a live order-book quote.
  • Liquidity and volume: Thin markets can move sharply and display wider spreads.
  • Spread and fees: The buy quote, sell quote and total transaction cost can differ materially from a headline price.
  • Execution conditions: A market order can fill across several prices; a limit order may not fill at all.

CoinGecko’s exchange table shows slightly different BTC/USD and BTC/USDT quotes across venues, which is normal in a fragmented, continuously trading market.

What Bitcoin’s market cap means

Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying Bitcoin’s current price by its circulating supply. Using the snapshot figures, approximately 20.09 million circulating BTC corresponded to a market capitalization of about $1.696 trillion. Market cap is a measure of the value assigned by the market at that moment; it is not cash that could necessarily be withdrawn at the quoted price.

Supply, satoshis and small purchases

The protocol caps Bitcoin’s maximum supply at 21 million BTC. One bitcoin is divided into 100,000,000 satoshis, so you do not need to buy a whole coin. An order can specify a fractional amount, subject to the platform’s minimum order and fee rules.

Where and how people buy Bitcoin

  1. Choose a venue: Review its jurisdiction, custody model, fee schedule, supported payment methods and withdrawal policy.
  2. Verify the quoted price: Check the BTC pair, timestamp, spread and whether the screen shows an indicative index or an executable order.
  3. Decide on order type: A limit order sets the maximum purchase price but may remain unfilled; a market order prioritizes execution but can incur slippage.
  4. Review the total cost: Include trading fees, payment fees, spread and any withdrawal charge before confirming.
  5. Secure custody: For holdings you intend to keep, consider a wallet whose backup and recovery process you understand. Bitcoin.org provides wallet education, and hardware or cold-storage wallets such as those offered by Ledger and Trezor are among the options listed by CoinGecko.

Risks to understand before buying

  • Price volatility: The 24-hour range alone shows that the quoted value can move substantially in a short period.
  • Execution risk: The displayed index price may differ from your fill price because of spread, slippage and latency.
  • Custody risk: Losing a private key or recovery phrase can permanently prevent access; a compromised exchange account can create a separate loss.
  • Operational and regulatory risk: Availability, payment rails, tax treatment and withdrawal rules depend on your country and can change.
  • Irreversibility: Bitcoin transfers generally cannot be reversed by a bank or exchange after confirmation.

Only commit money you can afford to lose, and verify the venue, wallet address and network details before sending funds.
