The February 1, 2025, headline “Bing Gains Nearly 4% Search Share in Past Year” describes real momentum for Microsoft’s search business, but it does not define what “nearly 4%” means. Microsoft reported growth and gains on PC; that is not the same as a verified four-percentage-point rise in Bing’s worldwide, all-device share. StatCounter’s latest complete month in the data available here, July 2026, put Bing at 4.47% worldwide, far behind Google’s 91.31%.
What did “nearly 4%” refer to?
The original article, published February 1, 2025, links Bing’s performance to Microsoft’s AI-search push, but its headline does not specify whether the figure means a four-percentage-point gain, a 4% relative increase, or a share level near 4%. It also does not provide a reproducible comparison period and platform for that exact number. Those distinctions matter: a change in percentage points is not the same as a percentage change, and desktop share is not worldwide share across all devices.
The article also says Google lost 6.5% share in 2024 without defining whether that is a relative decline or percentage-point change, or identifying the geography, device grouping, and calculation. That figure is therefore not enough to establish how much Bing gained or that Bing took share directly from Google. Read the original report.
What Microsoft reported
The report quotes Microsoft executive Jordi Ribas saying the company’s search and news business grew 21% year over year, that Bing search had a record performance, and that since Bing Chat launched in February 2023 Microsoft had seen growth in users, engagement, and PC market share. These are Microsoft’s first-party descriptions of its business and product performance, not an independent measurement of a four-point worldwide search-share gain.

The scope is important. Search and news business growth is broader than Bing web-search share; user and engagement growth are different measures from searches; and a PC market-share gain does not establish the same change on mobile or across all devices.

Why platform changes the picture
Bing’s position is considerably stronger on desktop than its all-platform share suggests. StatCounter reports worldwide desktop share of 8.84% for Bing in July 2026. Its retrieved worldwide mobile annual view lists Bing at 0.70% for 2024; that is an annual figure for a different period, not a July 2026 mobile reading.

The platform gap helps explain how a PC-focused gain could be meaningful to Microsoft while leaving Bing with a much smaller all-device worldwide share. It does not, by itself, establish why the gap exists or prove that Windows or Edge distribution caused a particular share change.

How AI may have contributed—and what is not proven
Microsoft introduced an AI-powered Bing and Edge in February 2023, initially as a limited desktop preview, with plans to expand access and bring the experience to mobile. Microsoft’s launch presentation documents that rollout. The timing makes AI search a plausible contributor to greater interest and engagement, but the reported figures do not isolate AI’s effect from other factors or show that AI caused all of Bing’s growth.
Bing also appears through Microsoft products such as Edge and Windows, which can support distribution or incidental use. That is context, not a quantified explanation for the headline figure. Sign-ups, chat sessions, searches, market share, and business growth should not be treated as interchangeable metrics.

Does Bing’s growth threaten Google?
The July 2026 worldwide figures show a substantial difference in scale: Bing at 4.47% versus Google at 91.31%. Bing’s stronger desktop position makes it a more significant competitor on that platform, but these figures do not indicate that Google is close to losing worldwide leadership. The competitive stakes may also extend beyond traditional search share—to AI-assisted discovery, advertising, and the traffic publishers receive when users search.
What publishers, advertisers, and SEO teams should do
A broad market-share headline cannot predict whether an individual site will gain visits or revenue. Search share, a site’s impressions, clicks, referral traffic, and conversions are separate measures. AI-generated answers may also change click-through behavior even if searches or product engagement rise.
- Check Bing directly. Use Bing Webmaster Tools to review indexing, crawl issues, and search performance rather than assuming Bing visibility mirrors Google’s.
- Segment your analytics. Compare search traffic and conversions by engine, device, country, and landing page. A desktop-heavy audience may have a different Bing mix from a mobile-heavy one.
- Evaluate paid search with your own results. Advertisers can test Microsoft Advertising against their audience and campaign goals; worldwide search share alone does not establish whether a campaign will be profitable.
- Keep measurement tools in their lanes. Google Search Console provides a Google-search comparison, while analytics data can show visits and outcomes. Neither should be mistaken for a complete cross-engine market-share measure.
- Do not reallocate everything on one headline. Expand monitoring or testing where your own audience data supports it; a rise in Bing’s general share does not guarantee a corresponding rise in your site’s traffic.
How to read the numbers
- 4% share means Bing accounts for approximately 4% of the measured activity in the stated market and period.
- A four-percentage-point gain means a share rose by four points—for example, from 1% to 5%.
- A 4% relative gain means a previous share was multiplied by 1.04; it is not a four-point increase.
- 4% desktop share describes a platform-specific measurement and may differ substantially from all-device share.
- 4% traffic growth describes a change in visits, not search-engine market share.
StatCounter’s market-share estimates and Microsoft’s business statements answer different questions. Monthly movements may also reflect seasonality, defaults, browser changes, or sampling. A higher share of searches does not automatically translate into the same share of advertising revenue or publisher traffic.
