The best startup websites do more than look polished: they make the product, audience, value, proof and next step obvious. The examples below are an editorial selection of patterns drawn from startup-site coverage, including a 12-example roundup updated January 5, 2023. Homepages change quickly, so treat the companies as design references rather than proof of current performance. The useful question is: what does each site make unusually clear or easy to do?

What counts as a startup website?

“Startup” describes the company context, not a visual style. A startup website might market SaaS software, a marketplace, a fintech product, a consumer subscription, hardware, robotics, climate technology, a service or a pre-launch idea. It can be minimalist, editorial, playful, technical, image-led or highly interactive.

Its primary job also varies. A site may ask visitors to book a demo, start a trial, join a waitlist, buy a product, download an app, request a quote, join a marketplace, learn about an unfamiliar category, or contact the company as an investor, partner or prospective employee.

12 startup website examples and the lesson behind each

Example Category Primary lesson Useful conversion path
Donut Software State the value plainly Learn more or start
Loom Workplace software Show the product in motion Start a free trial
Apothekary Consumer wellness Guide visitors to a choice Shop or take a quiz
Runner Mission-led service Use the founder story strategically Learn or join
UpCodes Professional software Build authority with evidence Search, subscribe or request access
Kohost Digital product Use motion to create energy Explore the product
Nuro Robotics and hardware Make a complex object tangible Understand the technology
Altar Consumer brand Let photography carry positioning Shop or discover
Choco Supply-chain software Pair a customer voice with purpose Book a conversation
Wardrobe Commerce Combine promotion with editorial hierarchy Shop a collection
NixCode Software or service Make the CTA and color hierarchy obvious Contact or get started
AngelList Startup marketplace Explain a two-sided network Join, hire or invest

The first 11 names were discussed in the Website Builder Expert roundup, updated January 5, 2023. AngelList is included as a marketplace pattern from a separate roundup; it is now a mature company, so do not treat it as a like-for-like early-stage peer.

1. Donut — clarity above the fold

Category: Workplace software.

Best lesson: Lead with a short, concrete explanation of the product.

What the site demonstrates: The roundup used Donut as an example of concise value communication paired with a product visual. A visitor can understand the category before reading a long feature list.

Why it matters: A first-time visitor is deciding whether the page is relevant. Plain language reduces the effort required to identify the problem being solved.

What to borrow: Write a headline that names the user and outcome, then place one product screenshot or workflow immediately beside it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy blindly: A short headline is not enough if it hides pricing, use cases or the next step. Add a secondary path for visitors who are still researching.

2. Loom — product-led storytelling

Category: Workplace video software.

Best lesson: Demonstrate the experience instead of describing it abstractly.

What the site demonstrates: Loom was highlighted for a memorable headline and video-led explanation. Motion can show how quickly a user moves from recording to sharing.

Why it matters: A short demonstration answers questions that feature copy cannot: what the interface looks like, what the workflow feels like and what the result is.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to borrow: Use a short, captioned screen recording or a sequence of annotated screenshots.

Do not copy blindly: Autoplay video can increase page weight and distract from the CTA. Provide a poster image, controls and a reduced-motion alternative.

3. Apothekary — interactive guidance

Category: Consumer wellness brand.

Best lesson: Help shoppers make a decision when the product range is unfamiliar.

What the site demonstrates: The cited example combined a quiz, consultation booking, product imagery and testimonials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matters: A guided question flow can turn a broad catalogue into a personally relevant recommendation while collecting useful intent information.

4. Runner — founder story with a job to do

Category: Mission-led service.

Best lesson: Use origin and mission to establish emotional credibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the site demonstrates: Runner was presented as an example of a founder story and mission being integrated into the page rather than hidden in an About section.

Why it matters: For a new company with limited track record, the reason it exists can help visitors understand motivation and differentiation.

What to borrow: Tell the origin in a short sequence: problem witnessed, insight gained, product created, action available now.

Do not copy blindly: Personal narrative cannot substitute for evidence. Pair it with a product explanation, specific outcomes or an invitation to try the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. UpCodes — authority and social proof

Category: Professional or regulatory software.

What to borrow: Use two specific testimonials with the speaker’s role, a clearly explained scope and links to documentation or representative use cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy blindly: Logos without labels can be misleading. Say whether an organization is a customer, partner, investor or integration, and date any usage statistic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to borrow: Animate one meaningful transition, such as a request becoming a completed workflow, and keep the CTA stable.

Do not copy blindly: Decorative effects can slow loading, obscure text and create accessibility problems. Respect reduced-motion settings and test with animation disabled.

7. Nuro — make hardware understandable

Category: Robotics and hardware.

Best lesson: Use product imagery and video to make an unfamiliar object concrete.

What the site demonstrates: Nuro was highlighted for product imagery and video that help visitors picture the technology in operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it matters: Hardware and robotics involve physical scale, context and behavior that are difficult to convey with a logo and a paragraph.

What to borrow: Show the object in a recognizable environment, add labels for the important parts and explain the user or community benefit beside the technical detail.

Do not copy blindly: A cinematic film is expensive and may hide practical information. A short demonstration with captions can be more useful.

8. Altar — brand through photography

Category: Consumer brand.

Best lesson: Make imagery express the product’s intended lifestyle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the site demonstrates: Altar was used as an example of photography aligned closely with brand positioning.

12. AngelList — explain a two-sided marketplace

Category: Startup marketplace; now a mature company rather than an early-stage peer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best lesson: Make each side of the network understand its role.

What the site demonstrates: Marketplace sites must explain who can participate, what transaction or connection occurs and what each side gains.

Why it matters: A founder, investor, recruiter and candidate may need different entry points. A single generic “Get started” button leaves too much interpretation to the visitor.

What to borrow: Put separate paths in the hero or navigation, then explain the handoff between supply, demand and the platform.

What makes a startup homepage effective?

Clear positioning

State what the company does, who it serves and the outcome it enables. Replace mission-only language with a plain-language subheadline that answers: What is it? Who is it for? What does it help them do? Why act now?

A visible, appropriate next step

Use one dominant primary CTA and one secondary path for lower-intent visitors. The “fold” varies by device, browser, zoom and accessibility settings; the goal is to expose the value proposition and next step without cramming every detail into the first screen.

Product communication

Show the interface, physical product, workflow or result. A logo communicates identity, not experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence with context

Use testimonials, customer stories, reviews, case studies or usage figures. Identify the speaker’s role and clarify whether logos represent customers, partners, investors or integrations.

Navigation, mobile usability and accessibility

Keep navigation predictable and test thumb-sized controls, readable type and page weight on phones. Check contrast, alternative text, keyboard access, visible focus, captions, form labels, error states and reduced-motion behavior.

Choose a design direction by business model

  • SaaS: Show the product interface, use cases and a demo or trial path.
  • Marketplace: Explain both audiences, the transaction and the trust mechanism.
  • Consumer brand: Prioritize product imagery, reviews, merchandising and a clear shop route.
  • Fintech: Make security, fees, eligibility and regulatory boundaries easy to find.
  • Climate or social-impact venture: Substantiate impact claims and define the measurement scope.
  • Pre-launch startup: Explain the problem, establish founder credibility and make the waitlist useful.

How should you build your startup website?

Route Best for Main advantages Main risks
DIY builder Validation and simple marketing sites Fast launch, templates, hosting and easy editing Template sameness, lock-in and plan limits
Independent designer Founders needing stronger positioning and UX Focused strategy and original design Upfront cost and reliance on one provider
Agency Funded teams and complex positioning Research, copy, brand and responsive production Higher cost, longer timeline and handoff risk
Custom development Specialized interactions and integrations Maximum flexibility and system control Highest maintenance and testing burden

Framer

Framer’s official page currently shows Free, Basic at $10 per month and Pro at $30 per month; billing cycle and taxes can affect the amount. Limits for domains, CMS, bandwidth, staging and editors vary by plan. It suits design-led marketing sites and launch pages more than large publishing operations or application-like products. See Framer’s pricing page.

Webflow

Webflow offers a free starting route, but its site plans and workspace plans are separate. Its documentation says each site hosted on a custom domain requires its own site plan. It fits teams needing detailed layout control and structured CMS workflows. Read Webflow’s pricing and site-plan guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wix

Wix provides free starting options, AI-assisted creation, templates, hosting, domain options and built-in business and marketing tools. Paid pricing depends on country and billing period, so check the displayed plan for your location at purchase. See Wix plans.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a practical choice for content-heavy startups. Its free plan uses a WordPress.com subdomain and does not include a custom domain. Details are on WordPress.com pricing.

Squarespace

Squarespace suits design-conscious service businesses, consumer brands and straightforward commerce. Plan names, prices, transaction fees and included features change, so use its official pricing page when deciding.

Startup homepage checklist

  • Can an unfamiliar visitor explain the product after one glance?
  • Is the target customer explicit?
  • Is one primary CTA visible and specific?
  • Is there a secondary path for visitors not ready to convert?
  • Does the page show the product or service in use?
  • Is relevant proof near the key claim?
  • Can visitors find pricing, features, use cases and contact options?
  • Does the layout work on a small screen with thumb-friendly controls?
  • Are contrast, focus states, labels, captions and reduced-motion behavior handled?
  • Are images compressed and videos optional?
  • Does the page remain understandable with animation disabled?
  • Has someone unfamiliar with the business tested the page and described the next step?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Product without customer: Replace abstract claims with audience, problem and outcome.
  • Too many equal CTAs: Choose one primary action and demote the rest.
  • Animation as decoration: Give every effect a communication job and provide an accessible alternative.
  • Uncontextualized proof: Identify relationships and source dated statistics.
  • Copying a funded production: Translate a 3D animation into an annotated screenshot, a brand film into a short demo, or a complex quiz into three useful questions.
  • Visual novelty mistaken for effectiveness: Judge comprehension, navigation, trust, accessibility and conversion clarity rather than originality alone.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
