For U.S. shoppers, the strongest currently price-supported sports-car choices under $50,000 are the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, and selected Ford Mustang fastback trims. That is a shorter list than the original “10 best” promise: available current pricing does not substantiate ten distinct models, so this guide names four rather than filling the gap with unverified or outdated prices. Prices below are manufacturer starting prices, not out-the-door costs, and are tied to the listed model year and published price information.

Which sports cars under $50,000 are currently supported by price evidence?

The comparison below uses U.S. new-car pricing for 2026 models. Starting prices can exclude destination and other charges, and they do not guarantee a vehicle is available at that price in your area. Treat each figure as a way to shortlist cars, then check the exact trim and window sticker with a dealer.

Model Body and layout Starting price or supported price range What the available evidence establishes
2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata Two-seat roadster; soft top or retractable-fastback RF Sport soft top, 6MT: $30,430; listed trims extend to Grand Touring 6AT RF at $39,420 Mazda’s September 2026 announced MSRPs; see trim details below. Destination is additional.
2026 Subaru BRZ Two-door, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe $30,095 starting price advertised on Subaru’s page; trim-level range not established here Subaru states a 2.4-liter boxer engine rated at 228 hp. Confirm trim pricing and destination with Subaru.
2026 Toyota GR86 Two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupe $31,400 starting MSRP Toyota’s current model page lists this starting MSRP; higher-trim pricing is not established here.
2026 Ford Mustang Fastback coupe EcoBoost Fastback: $33,490; EcoBoost Premium Fastback: $36,345; GT Fastback: $47,795 Ford’s selector lists these named trims at starting prices. It does not establish that every Mustang trim fits the cap.

Car and Driver’s current under-$50,000 ranking includes the Miata, BRZ, and GR86 among its displayed top-ranked cars. It says its ranking weighs roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. That figure describes Car and Driver’s own evaluation process; it is not an industry-wide study. Its ranking is one useful perspective, not a universal answer to which car is best for you.

Which one fits the way you want to drive?

Choose the Miata for open-air, lightweight roadster driving

The Miata is the clearest match for a buyer who wants a two-seat convertible and values an open-top driving experience. Mazda’s 2026 lineup includes a conventional soft top and the RF, a retractable-fastback version. Car and Driver places it first in its displayed current under-$50,000 ranking.

Mazda announced these U.S. 2026 Miata MSRPs in September 2026:

  • Sport, six-speed manual soft top: $30,430.
  • Club, six-speed manual soft top: $33,930.
  • Club RF: $41,900.
  • Grand Touring, six-speed manual soft top: $35,730.
  • Grand Touring, six-speed automatic soft top: $36,650.
  • Grand Touring, six-speed manual RF: $38,450.
  • Grand Touring, six-speed automatic RF: $39,420.

Mazda lists the optional Brembo/BBS/Recaro package at $5,050 on the soft-top Club and says it is included on the RF Club. These figures are MSRPs, not purchase totals. Mazda said the 2026 MSRP increased by $300 effective September 15, 2026; that increase does not apply to existing dealer inventory or vehicles already carrying window labels. Destination and handling became $1,315 effective August 11, 2026, or $1,360 in Alaska. Confirm the specific vehicle’s label and charges before comparing offers.

Compare the BRZ and GR86 as rear-wheel-drive coupe choices

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 are two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupes suited to shoppers who want a fixed-roof sports car rather than a convertible. Subaru describes the BRZ as front-engine and rates its 2.4-liter boxer engine at 228 hp. Its page advertises a $30,095 starting price, but a full current trim-price range and destination treatment are not established here.

Toyota lists a $31,400 starting MSRP for the 2026 GR86. Car and Driver highlights its steering and chassis setup. The BRZ and GR86 are mechanically related, but that does not make their trims or equipment identical; compare the exact configurations and current official pricing rather than assuming one brand’s specification or price applies to the other.

Consider the Mustang for a larger fastback-coupe experience

Ford’s 2026 selector lists three fastback trims below the $50,000 starting-price ceiling: EcoBoost at $33,490, EcoBoost Premium at $36,345, and GT at $47,795. These are manufacturer starting prices for the named trims, not guarantees of a final transaction price. Options, destination and other fees, taxes, dealer pricing, and local inventory can change what you pay. Do not assume every Mustang version or configuration falls below the cap.

How to decide what “best” means for your budget

Horsepower alone does not settle which sports car is the best buy. Make a shortlist based on how you will use the car, then compare the same factors across the exact trims you can afford.

  • Driving feel: Consider steering, handling, acceleration, and how much you value an engaging drive. These are distinct qualities, not interchangeable measures.
  • Body style and seating: Decide whether a two-seat roadster, a fixed-roof coupe, or a larger fastback best suits your passengers and routine.
  • Comfort and everyday use: Think about ride comfort, the amount of space you need, and whether you will use the car for regular commuting or mainly for leisure.
  • Fuel efficiency and value: Compare the figures and equipment for the actual trims under consideration. Do not assume that a lower starting MSRP automatically means better value for your needs.
  • Transmission: Check which transmission is offered on the trim you want; the Miata prices listed above distinguish manual and automatic versions where specified.
  • Full purchase cost: Add destination, options, taxes, fees, and any dealer price difference. A starting MSRP is not an out-the-door price.

Why this guide covers four cars, not ten

The current price information supports a useful shortlist, but not ten fully verified under-$50,000 choices. Current official MSRP evidence is available here for the Miata, GR86, and named Mustang trims; Subaru’s page provides a BRZ starting price but not a verified trim-by-trim range in the available information. That is not enough to rank ten cars fairly or to claim every candidate remains below the cap.

Honda’s 2026 Civic Si and Civic Type R pages surfaced, and Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide listed the Civic Si and Volkswagen Golf GTI among sports-car entries. The available results did not establish current prices needed to confirm those models under $50,000. They are therefore not presented as verified budget picks. Check current manufacturer listings for any additional candidate before treating it as eligible, and do not rely on an older model year’s price.
