Best Savings Accounts for Kids and Teens: How to Choose the Right One

The best savings account for a child depends on ownership, fees, access, location and balance-based APY tiers—not just the highest advertised rate.

There is no single best savings account for every child or teenager. The right account depends on where you live, who can own or control it, the child’s age, minimum deposits, fees, access options and how the interest rate applies to the expected balance. The examples below show how materially these terms can differ; verify current disclosures and local eligibility before opening any account.

What makes a kids’ or teen savings account different?

“Kids’ savings account” is a marketing description, not a standardized product type. Banks set their own rules for age limits, joint ownership, adult access, opening deposits, balance requirements, fees and rate tiers.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) says families can consider a savings account at an FDIC-insured bank. Its consumer guidance says a parent or legal guardian generally needs to be added until the child reaches adulthood, and states that deposits are insured up to $250,000. Ownership structure matters, so confirm how the account is titled and insured with the bank and the FDIC before relying on that protection.

Key questions to answer before comparing accounts

Who owns and controls the money?

Some accounts require an adult joint owner for a minor; others may be opened only in a branch or managed primarily by the parent. Ask when the child gains independent access, who can make withdrawals, and what changes when the child reaches the bank’s age of majority.

What does it cost to open and keep?

Compare the minimum opening deposit, any minimum ongoing balance, monthly service charge, excess-withdrawal fee and other account fees. A high advertised APY can be outweighed by charges if the balance is small or irregular.

Which balance earns the advertised APY?

Tiered accounts can pay one APY on the first portion of a balance and a much lower APY on the remainder. Match the tiers to the amount the child is likely to keep, rather than comparing the headline rate alone.

How will the child use the account?

Digital and mobile banking can help an older teen monitor deposits, while a branch-based account may suit a family that wants in-person teaching. Check whether the bank serves your state or community and whether online access is available to both the adult and child.

Account Eligibility and adult involvement Opening, balance and fee details found Published rate and access details
Civista NexGen Savings Account holders are under 25; a minor needs a joint owner aged 18 or older. No minimum opening deposit. The result page stated no monthly service charge or balance requirement. The page describes digital and mobile banking tools but did not state a youth-account APY.
CRBT Rookie Cookie Savings Designed for children 18 and under. $1 minimum to open; no minimum balance was listed in the result. APY as of March 1, 2026: 4.00% on balances up to $2,500 and 0.05% on the portion above $2,500. The rate may change.
First Bank Kids Cash Savings For children under 18. $5 minimum deposit to open; opening is in a branch. Variable APY as of September 27, 2026: 4.00% on the portion up to $500 and 0.01% on the portion above $500. The rate is subject to change.

The two dated rate examples demonstrate why balance tiers matter. A child saving more than the top tier will not earn the headline APY on the entire balance. Neither example establishes a national winner, and availability may be limited by location.

How to choose by age and saving pattern

Young children

Prioritize an adult-controlled structure, low or no fees, a small opening requirement and a simple way to review deposits together. A branch option can support hands-on lessons if that fits your family.

Older children

Look for shared digital access, clear transaction visibility and an APY tier that still rewards the amount the child is building. Confirm the withdrawal rules before encouraging regular deposits.

Teens

Consider whether the account supports independent monitoring while preserving the adult’s required legal role. Mobile tools, alerts and straightforward statements can make budgeting practice more useful than a slightly higher rate that applies only to a small balance.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Confirm eligibility: Check age limits, state or local availability and whether an adult must be a joint owner.
  2. Read the fee schedule: Record the opening deposit, minimum balance, monthly charge and withdrawal-related fees.
  3. Map the rate tiers: Estimate the child’s likely balance and identify which portions receive each APY.
  4. Check access: Compare branch, online and mobile options, plus who receives login credentials, statements and alerts.
  5. Review ownership and insurance: Ask how the account is titled, when control changes and how FDIC coverage applies to that structure.
  6. Recheck before opening: APYs, fees and requirements are variable; read the bank’s current account agreement and disclosures.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the highest headline APY without checking the balance tier.
  • Assuming every “kids” account has the same ownership or withdrawal rules.
  • Ignoring a minimum balance or monthly fee because the opening deposit is low.
  • Assuming an account is available nationwide without confirming the institution’s service area.
  • Treating a dated APY as guaranteed for the life of the account.

Bottom line

Start with ownership, access and fees, then compare the rate on the balance your child is actually likely to hold. Civista NexGen, CRBT Rookie Cookie and First Bank Kids Cash show three different combinations of age rules, opening requirements, access and rate tiers. Verify current terms directly with the institution and confirm FDIC-insurance treatment before making a decision.
