If you save PDFs, videos, newsletters, podcasts, or social threads alongside articles, the best app depends on what you want to do with them. Choose Readwise Reader for a broad reading-and-annotation workflow, Raindrop.io for a searchable library of varied bookmarks and files, Instapaper for a focused offline reading queue, or Matter if its iPhone, iPad, and web availability fits your devices and you want transcript and listening features. These are recommendations based on each product’s documented features, not a controlled test.

First decide: reading queue or searchable archive?

A read-it-later queue is built around getting to saved material and reading it with less distraction. A bookmark manager is better suited to collecting different kinds of links and files, then finding them later. Some apps overlap, but that distinction is a useful starting point: Instapaper foregrounds reading and offline access, while Raindrop.io emphasizes saving, organizing, and searching a varied library.

Before choosing, consider the formats you actually save, the devices you use, how reliably your sources can be captured, and whether you need annotation, audio, search, or export. A format list does not guarantee every page will import in full, particularly when a source limits access to its content.

Compare the four apps by workflow

App Documented material and features Best fit Key qualification
Readwise Reader Articles, newsletters, RSS, PDFs, EPUBs, videos, and tweets or threads; highlights and annotations sync to Readwise. Its product page also lists offline access, text-to-speech, and sending documents to Kindle. A broad reading and annotation library with a review or export workflow. Some sources may import only a URL or parse incompletely; podcast support is transcript-oriented, not a full podcast player. Subscription pricing and terms can change.
Raindrop.io Bookmarks, articles, videos, PDFs, images, and other files. Its product page describes searching saved page, PDF, and YouTube content and automatically creating copies of saved pages and files. A mixed-media bookmark archive organized for later retrieval. The product page does not establish that its reading and annotation workflow suits every reader’s needs. Check plan limits and archival details.
Instapaper Articles, blog posts, videos, and long emails in a distraction-free reading experience, with offline access. Its docs describe syncing across web, iOS, Android, Kindle, and Kobo. A clean reading queue, especially if offline reading or an e-reader workflow matters. PDF reading and Kindle digests are listed among Premium features. Check current plan details and supported device workflows.
Matter Articles, threads, PDFs, YouTube videos, and podcast episodes; its page also describes newsletters, RSS, text-to-speech, highlights, and time-synced podcast transcripts. Readers who value listening and transcript features and use the listed platforms. The product page lists iPhone, iPad, and web. Confirm that platform coverage works for your devices.

Which app fits each kind of saver?

Choose Readwise Reader for breadth and annotation

Reader documents support for articles, newsletters, RSS, EPUBs, PDFs, videos, and tweets or threads. Highlights and annotations sync to Readwise; its product page also lists web, desktop, iOS, Android, browser extensions, offline access, text-to-speech, and sending documents to Kindle. That combination makes it the broadest documented option here for readers who want one library for reading and annotation. See the Reader product and pricing page for current subscription terms; its FAQ lists a 30-day free trial followed by $9.99 per month billed annually or $12.99 per month billed monthly, with some stated discounts. These terms can change, so verify them before subscribing.

Capture quality depends on the source and how you save it. Readwise says its browser extension is its most robust capture path because it can access rendered page content. Its documentation gives examples where mobile sharing passes only a URL, resulting in partial parsing when content is blocked. It also says a paywalled article can be fully captured only through the iOS Safari share path while logged into the site. These are documented conditions, not a guarantee that every paywalled page will work. Read the saving-content guidance when a particular source matters to you.

For podcasts, Readwise describes saving a link to produce a transcript that can be highlighted or used with Reader features; it explicitly presents the feature as a companion, not a full podcast player. Its adding-content documentation explains that workflow.

Choose Raindrop.io for a varied reference library

Raindrop.io is the clearest match if your saved collection mixes links with files and media. Its official page describes organizing books, songs, articles, and other discoveries; reading articles and viewing videos from the library; uploading PDFs, images, videos, and other common files; and searching the content of saved pages, PDFs, and YouTube videos. It also says it automatically creates copies of saved pages and files. Because the product page does not establish every plan limit or the exact behavior for every file and page, check those details against your own requirements at Raindrop.io.

Choose Instapaper for a focused, offline-friendly queue

Instapaper describes a distraction-free reading experience for web content, blog posts, videos, and long emails, with offline access and syncing across web, iOS, Android, Kindle, and Kobo. Its Premium overview and Premium page list full-text search, a PDF reader, and Kindle digests among Premium features; the Premium page also lists unlimited articles, videos, and other pages. Check the current plan page to confirm which tier includes a feature you need.

Choose Matter if its platform scope and transcript workflow suit you

Matter combines articles, threads, PDFs, YouTube videos, and podcast episodes, with time-synced transcripts for podcasts. Its page also describes newsletters and RSS, text-to-speech, highlights, and sending material to Kindle. The listed platforms are iPhone, iPad, and web, so it is a plausible choice when those fit your devices and listening features matter. Confirm platform coverage on Matter’s official site rather than assuming support for another operating system.

Check capture, devices, and plan limits before moving your library

  • Test your important sources. Save examples of the pages, newsletters, PDFs, or media you rely on. A service may support a format in general but still capture a particular source incompletely.
  • Match the app to your devices. Matter’s product page lists iPhone, iPad, and web; the other apps describe broader device or reading workflows in the linked documentation. Check current platform details if you depend on a specific device.
  • Check feature gating. Instapaper lists PDF reading and Kindle digests under Premium. Readwise Reader subscription terms can change. Confirm current plans before paying or importing a large collection.
  • Separate transcripts from playback. Matter describes time-synced podcast transcripts; Readwise frames podcast support as a transcript companion rather than a full player. If you need to listen in the app, verify the specific playback workflow.
  • Decide whether you need an e-reader. Kindle is an optional destination: Instapaper documents Kindle availability, and Readwise Reader lists sending documents to Kindle. It is not a prerequisite for using either service.

How to make the choice

  1. List the formats you save most: for example, articles and newsletters, PDFs and EPUBs, video, podcast episodes, threads, or general files.
  2. Choose the main job: use a reading-queue mindset if you want to read saved material offline; use an archive mindset if organizing and searching a mixed collection is more important.
  3. Verify capture for your sources: paywalls, mobile sharing paths, and source-specific restrictions can affect what arrives in the app.
  4. Confirm devices and paid features: check the official product and plan pages for platform coverage, PDF features, Kindle workflows, and current pricing before committing.
