Choose Amazon when you need existing shopping demand for standardized products, Shopify when you are building a branded store and can generate traffic, Etsy for handmade or personalized goods, and eBay for used, collectible, refurbished, or one-off inventory. Square Online suits local and in-person sellers, WooCommerce suits WordPress users who want control, and BigCommerce fits more complex catalogs. Walmart Marketplace is usually a second channel after your operations are reliable.
The practical beginner path is to start with one channel that already matches your product and master fulfillment, pricing, and customer service before adding an owned storefront or another marketplace.
Marketplace or your own online store?
Amazon, Etsy, eBay, and Walmart Marketplace are marketplaces. They provide search discovery, checkout, payment collection, buyer trust, and sometimes fulfillment. You pay fees, compete beside similar listings, follow marketplace policies, and have less control over the customer relationship.
Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Square Online are primarily owned-store platforms. You control branding, merchandising, customer-data collection, and the buying experience, but you must create demand through search, social media, email, advertising, partnerships, or an existing audience.

Best online-selling platforms for beginners
Amazon: best for standardized products and built-in demand
Amazon is a strong starting point for private-label, wholesale, and other standardized products with clear search demand. Customers compare price, availability, reviews, and delivery speed on a common product page.
In the US, Amazon lists an Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold and a Professional plan at $39.99 per month. Referral fees vary by category and usually apply as a percentage of the total sales price. Examples on Amazon’s current table include 15% for Home and Kitchen, Sports and Outdoors, and Toys and Games; 8% for Consumer Electronics; tiered 5%, 10%, or 17% rates for Clothing and Accessories; and 20% up to $250 then 5% above $250 for Jewelry. The product’s fee category can differ from its customer-facing category. See Amazon’s current fee table.
With FBA, Amazon stores, picks, packs, and ships orders and handles certain customer-service and returns functions. FBA adds fulfillment, storage, removal, and possible surcharge costs. FBM leaves fulfillment with you. Use Amazon’s product-level Revenue Calculator rather than a generic margin estimate.
- Advantages: existing product-search traffic, familiar checkout, standardized listings, and optional fulfillment infrastructure.
- Risks: competition, advertising pressure, complex fees, review dependence, tied-up inventory, and possible suspension after policy, authenticity, intellectual-property, or account-health problems.

Shopify: best for building a brand you control
Shopify is usually the fastest route to a branded direct-to-consumer storefront. It works best when you already have an audience or a realistic plan for traffic from content, social media, creators, email, or advertising.
Shopify’s US pricing page currently shows Basic at $29 per month billed yearly or $39 billed monthly; Grow at $79 yearly or $105 monthly; and Advanced at $299 yearly or $399 monthly. Basic online card rates are displayed from 2.9% + 30¢ USD, with rates varying by plan and circumstances. Check Shopify’s pricing page for current terms.
- Advantages: branded design, email capture, flexible merchandising, multichannel selling, and a large integration ecosystem.
- Risks: no automatic customer demand, recurring subscription costs, app subscriptions, and responsibility for traffic, taxes, fulfillment, and support.
Budget for payment processing, apps, themes, domain registration, shipping, email, taxes, and advertising. A trial or introductory promotion does not make a full store free. Third-party payment providers can also create additional transaction fees under applicable plan terms.

Etsy’s buyer intent aligns with handmade goods, personalized gifts, craft supplies, qualifying vintage items, art, jewelry, and small-batch products.
Etsy lists a $0.20 listing fee per item; listings generally expire after four months. It also charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed listing price plus amounts charged for shipping and gift wrapping. Payment-processing fees depend on the seller’s bank location and Etsy Payments eligibility. Additional costs can include Offsite Ads, currency conversion, regulatory operating fees, shipping, and renewals. See Etsy’s fee policy.

Etsy’s rules require accurate handmade, vintage, and production-partner disclosures. Mass-produced goods cannot simply be labeled handmade.
eBay: best for resale, collectibles, and unique inventory
eBay is often better than Amazon when each item differs by condition, rarity, model, or completeness. It supports auctions and fixed-price listings and is useful for used goods, collectibles, refurbished products, parts, and one-off inventory.

Walmart Marketplace: a credible second channel
Walmart Marketplace can suit established sellers with reliable fulfillment, accurate catalog data, competitive prices, and everyday consumer products. Its pricing page publishes category referral fees, such as 5%, 10%, or 15% for Apparel and Accessories depending on price, 8% for Consumer Electronics, and 15% for Books. See Walmart’s current pricing.
There is no standard monthly subscription, but referral fees, fulfillment, advertising, returns, and operational costs remain. For many first-time sellers, Walmart is better after one primary channel is working.

WooCommerce’s core is free and open source, with no platform revenue share. You still pay for hosting, payment processing, security, backups, maintenance, and extensions. WooCommerce says hosting commonly ranges from $25 to $350 per month for most stores and extensions commonly cost $29 to $299 per year each. Details are at WooCommerce pricing.

BigCommerce: best for complex catalogs and B2B growth
BigCommerce provides more built-in commerce functionality than a bare storefront and can fit larger catalogs or wholesale requirements. Its current page shows Core at $29 per month annually or $39 monthly, with a trailing-twelve-month gross-merchandise-value threshold of $30,000 on Core. Published open-payment-provider fees are 2.0% on Core, 1.0% on Growth, and 0.6% on Scale under the current structure; eligible US card rates begin at 2.89% + $0.29. Review current plan, GMV, and payment terms at BigCommerce pricing.
Square Online: best for local and in-person sellers
Square Online is useful when you already use Square POS or need pickup, local delivery, and synchronized online and in-person inventory. Square’s current plan page lists a Free plan with no monthly subscription and online card processing of 3.3% + 30¢; Plus and Premium show 2.9% + 30¢. Plans and eligibility can vary by account and location. See Square’s plan details.
Amazon vs. Shopify
| Question | Amazon | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Marketplace search can expose a listing to shoppers, but visibility depends on relevance, price, reviews, inventory, and advertising. | You generate the traffic. |
| Brand control | Limited by shared listings and marketplace rules. | High control over design, merchandising, and customer journey. |
| Fulfillment | FBA or your own operation. | Your own operation, a 3PL, or connected services. |
| Customer relationship | Data use and off-platform communication are governed by Amazon policies. | Greater control over permitted customer-data collection and retention marketing. |
| Best first use | Validate standardized products where buyers already search. | Build a durable brand when you can attract visitors. |
Etsy vs. Amazon vs. Shopify for makers
| Product situation | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized wedding or gift item | Etsy | Buyer intent and visual discovery match the product. |
| Standardized private-label item | Amazon | Search-led shopping and repeatable listings fit the model. |
| Distinctive handmade brand with an audience | Shopify, possibly alongside Etsy | You can own the storefront and retention experience. |
eBay vs. Amazon for resellers
Use eBay when uniqueness, condition, rarity, or auction dynamics determine value. Use Amazon when the item is new, standardized, and eligible for a shared product page. On either platform, include sourcing records, accurate condition information, shipping costs, returns, and dispute risk in your margin.

How much does it cost to start?
Your real cost is:
Net profit = sale price − product cost − platform or marketplace fees − payment processing − shipping − packaging − fulfillment − refunds and returns − advertising − software − taxes.
For a narrow plan comparison, Amazon Professional’s $39.99 monthly fee divided by the $0.99 Individual per-item fee is about 41 items per month. That is only a subscription-versus-per-item comparison; referral fees and Professional-plan features still matter. Amazon presents the Individual plan as potentially suitable below roughly 40 items monthly in its FAQ.
Low-priced products are especially sensitive to fixed charges such as 30¢ payment fees or Etsy’s 20¢ listing fee. Bundles, multipacks, minimum order values, and lower-cost fulfillment can improve the economics. Oversized, fragile, and slow-moving products need dimensional-weight, storage, damage, and return calculations before using FBA or another warehouse.
A simple platform-selection quiz
- No audience and standardized product: start with Amazon if the category is eligible and the margin supports its fees.
- Handmade, personalized, craft, or qualifying vintage: start with Etsy; add Shopify when repeat customers and brand control justify it.
- Used, collectible, refurbished, or one-off inventory: start with eBay.
- Existing social, email, creator, or local audience: consider Shopify or Square Online first, depending on whether sales are national or local.
- Existing WordPress site: consider WooCommerce to avoid an unnecessary migration.
- Complex catalog or B2B requirements: compare BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and Shopify against your integration and volume needs.
- Operationally mature, multichannel seller: add Walmart after inventory, shipping, and support workflows are dependable.
The safest beginner launch plan
- Choose one product category and define the customer and use case.
- Check restricted-product, intellectual-property, safety, labeling, cosmetics, food, children’s-product, and brand-approval rules before buying inventory.
- Calculate landed cost, every platform fee, shipping, packaging, returns, advertising, and taxes.
- Choose one primary channel based on product fit and audience, not popularity.
- Create accurate photos, titles, specifications, handling times, and return terms.
- Decide whether you will self-fulfill, use FBA, use a 3PL, produce to order, or offer pickup or local delivery.
- Track net profit, conversion, refund rate, late shipments, cancellations, and inventory—not revenue alone.
- Build an owned storefront after the product and fulfillment process are proven.
- Add a second channel only when inventory synchronization, order routing, accounting, and customer-service capacity are ready.
Common beginner mistakes
- Choosing by platform popularity instead of product-market fit.
- Comparing only monthly subscriptions while ignoring payment, referral, fulfillment, advertising, and return costs.
- Launching Shopify without a traffic plan.
- Buying too much inventory before validating demand.
- Launching on five channels before mastering one workflow.
- Underpricing packaging, customer service, refunds, and returns.
- Assuming “free” means no hosting, maintenance, processing, or extension costs.
- Failing to retain supplier records, certificates, tax records, and backup sales channels.
Special cases to plan for
Regulated products
Food, supplements, cosmetics, children’s goods, batteries, alcohol, weapons-related products, and medical-related products may require approvals, documentation, special labels, or handling. Verify current rules before purchasing stock.
Dropshipping
Supplier fulfillment does not remove your responsibility for product quality, delivery promises, refunds, authenticity, and customer support. Retail-arbitrage or marketplace-to-marketplace dropshipping can violate policies and create shipping and authenticity problems.
Taxes and legal duties
Marketplace-collected sales tax does not eliminate every obligation. You may still need business registration, income-tax reporting, sales-tax registration outside marketplace-facilitated transactions, product-liability coverage, privacy terms, refund policies, and compliant labeling. Use a qualified tax or legal professional for fact-specific advice.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick the channel that already fits your product and demand. Amazon is the practical first test for many standardized products; Etsy and eBay win for their specialized inventory; Shopify is the stronger long-term home when you can generate traffic and want brand ownership. Start with one channel, prove your economics, then expand deliberately.
