Use FPT Shop when convenience and a formal trade-in matter more than maximizing your sale price; check Thế Giới Di Động for returned-device stock; compare XTmobile for specialist used-phone listings; and treat Facebook Marketplace as the flexible but higher-risk option. The right choice depends on whether you value a lower price, a written warranty, a quick sale, or the highest possible proceeds.

Quick comparison: where to buy or sell
| Option | Best for | Buying protection or selling route | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| CellphoneS | Risk-adjusted used-phone purchase across multiple brands | Dedicated used inventory; published retailer warranty terms; trade-in valuation through its trade-in program | Retail pricing may exceed private listings; confirm the specific device’s condition and coverage |
| FPT Shop | Formal trade-in or returned-device shopping | Trade-in program for eligible devices; returned products listed online and in stores | Acceptance and valuation depend on inspection; branch stock may differ |
| Thế Giới Di Động | Returned phones from a large retailer | Product-level returned-device listings | Inventory and condition vary; compare the actual price, not just the advertised discount |
| XTmobile | Specialist used iPhone comparison and select Samsung devices | Used-phone listings and a conditional resale-right feature described in its extended-warranty terms | Check the exact warranty, eligibility, device region, parts history, and stock |
| Facebook Marketplace HCMC | Price flexibility and direct negotiation | Direct buyer-to-seller transaction; no standardized warranty | Highest verification, payment, and dispute risk |
Retailer trade-in is generally the simplest selling route; a private sale can yield more if you find a buyer and manage the inspection and payment safely. A shop’s offer is lower in part because it must inspect, prepare, warranty, and resell the device.
Best places to buy a used phone in HCMC
CellphoneS: strongest all-round starting point
CellphoneS has dedicated used-phone listings spanning Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Realme, Nokia, Infinix, TCL, Tecno, OnePlus, Sony, and other brands. Its published used-phone policy says qualifying hardware failures receive a 30-day one-for-one exchange, with six months of coverage for the power system and display. Those are retailer terms, not a manufacturer warranty; confirm coverage, exclusions, and the exact device condition before purchase. See CellphoneS used phones and terms.

It is a sensible first stop if you want an in-person inspection, listed prices, and a more structured route for after-sales support than an individual listing. For sellers, CellphoneS also offers trade-in valuation by product selection or IMEI through its trade-in service. Treat an online estimate as provisional until inspection.
Thế Giới Di Động: look for returned-device stock
The chain’s “máy đổi trả” category lists returned or exchanged phones, with inventory that changes by model and location. Its page has advertised discounts of up to 65% against listed new-device prices, but that is a product-specific headline, not a typical discount or a guarantee that a returned phone is cheaper than the current market. Some comparison prices may refer to a new model no longer sold. Compare the specific phone with current listings elsewhere, then check its condition and written warranty. Check the returned-phone catalogue.
XTmobile: specialist price comparison
XTmobile publishes used iPhone listings and says its price list is updated regularly. It is useful for comparing specialist offers, especially if you want to investigate a particular iPhone model. The retailer also describes a conditional resale-right feature for qualifying Apple and Samsung phones: it says it may buy back an eligible device at 90% of its used-device value at resale. Eligibility conditions include unchanged condition, no dents or water damage, no account lock, functioning fingerprint authentication where applicable, and complete accessories; the page says missing packaging may incur a 5% deduction. This is not a guaranteed future price or investment floor: the future used-device value and eligibility both matter. Read the full terms before treating it as part of the purchase value. Used iPhone listings · Resale-right and extended-warranty terms.
FPT Shop: consider returned stock, but especially for trade-in
FPT Shop describes its “máy đổi trả” products as viewable and purchasable in-store or on its website. It can also be convenient when replacing a phone: its trade-in program lists selected iPhone, Samsung, OPPO, HONOR, Xiaomi, and other brands, subject to the device’s condition and program eligibility. Check the actual model, branch availability, and final valuation rather than assuming an online listing or estimate applies everywhere. Returned-device information · Trade-in terms.

Facebook Marketplace: possible bargains, no retailer safety net
Marketplace has local HCMC phone listings and gives buyers and sellers room to negotiate. Listing prices are not verified completed-sale prices, and there is no standardized warranty. Copied or stale posts, account-locked or restricted phones, hidden damage, and payment disputes are reasons to use this route only if you can inspect the phone and are comfortable declining a deal. Where to sell or trade in your phone
Trade in at a retailer for speed and a paper trail
Start with CellphoneS or FPT Shop if you are buying a replacement and want fewer steps. CellphoneS supports device valuation by product or IMEI; FPT Shop accepts selected brands and models subject to inspection. Ask for the final offer in writing after the physical assessment, and compare it with at least one other valuation. A headline estimate or upgrade subsidy is not the same as cash proceeds: confirm whether the value is cash, a discount tied to a purchase, or subject to program conditions.
Sell directly to a shop for a quick exit
A local phone shop may make an immediate offer, but the amount and documentation vary. Ask how the shop assessed the battery, screen, repairs, and account status; whether accessories are required; how and when payment is made; and whether you receive a receipt recording the device and agreed amount. Get another offer if the first valuation is not explained.
Sell privately for a chance at more
A private buyer may pay more than a trade-in offer, but you take on listing, negotiation, no-shows, inspection, and payment risk. Set out the exact model, storage, condition, known repairs, and included accessories in the listing. Keep messages and evidence of the agreed amount, meet in a public place, and confirm cleared payment in your own banking app before handing over the phone.

How to inspect a used phone before paying
Use this checklist in person, whether you are at a shop or meeting a private seller. Apple’s used-iPhone guidance also recommends checking condition, battery, parts history, locks, and core functions.
- Confirm exactly what is for sale. Ask for the model number, storage, color, market region, and whether the device is new-to-you used, returned, open-box, repaired, or refurbished. These descriptions are not interchangeable: ask what inspection or repair was done and what the seller’s grade means. Request the IMEI or serial number, but verify it in Settings on the actual phone; a matching box alone proves little.
- Ask about history before testing. Ask whether the screen, battery, cameras, housing, or motherboard has been replaced, whether the phone is imported, and whether it is carrier-locked, financed, or managed by an employer. A replacement part is not automatically a reason to walk away, but its type and effect on functions should be disclosed and reflected in the price.
- Check for account locks and restrictions. The owner should remove Apple Account or Google account protection before the sale. Do not buy an iPhone showing “iPhone Locked to Owner,” or accept a promise to remove it later. For Android, do not proceed if a reset device still requires the previous owner’s Google account. Ask for evidence that a privately sold phone is paid off and free of carrier or workplace restrictions; a working phone today does not prove that it cannot later be restricted.
- Check iPhone parts and carrier status. On iOS 15.2 or later, where available, open Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History. An “Unknown” label can indicate an incomplete repair, non-genuine or previously used part, or a part not working as expected; it does not by itself identify which explanation applies. In the same About screen, check Carrier Lock; “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked iPhone. Apple’s coverage checker can help check remaining Apple coverage using the serial number, but do not assume that a retailer warranty or international service applies without written confirmation.
- Test the hardware and connectivity. Inspect display brightness, touch response, dead pixels, discoloration, and refresh rate if relevant. Test Face ID or Touch ID, fingerprint reader, buttons, mute switch, charging port, front and rear cameras, autofocus, flash, video, microphones, earpiece, speakers, vibration, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data, SIM or eSIM, and NFC if you need contactless payments. Check battery health where the phone reports it and observe charging behavior.
- Verify local-network fit before paying. For an imported model, confirm the exact model number supports the bands and SIM or eSIM setup you need with your Vietnamese carrier. Imported does not mean fake, but region can affect network bands, software, dual-SIM or eSIM behavior, shutter sound, accessories, and warranty route. Ask whether warranty is handled by the manufacturer or only by the seller, and get the answer in writing.
- Erase and activate before payment. Have the seller erase the phone and let it reach setup. Complete enough setup to verify that activation works, the prior account is no longer required, and a local network functions. Do not treat a “Hello” screen alone as proof that activation or account-lock checks have passed.
- Get the terms on a receipt. Keep a receipt or invoice identifying the model and IMEI, the written warranty duration and covered parts, the exchange or return deadline, and any disclosed repair or replacement history. Check whether returns cover a change of mind or only faults, and whether the warranty excludes water, accidental damage, battery wear, or third-party repairs.
How to sell safely and protect your data
- Back up and transfer first. Save photos, contacts, messages, authenticator codes, and passwords. Transfer eSIM service and remove physical SIM cards before handing over the device.
- Remove accounts and payment access. Sign out of Apple, Google, and Samsung accounts and messaging apps; disable Find My iPhone or equivalent protection; remove banking apps and payment tokens. Apple’s resale guidance explains the need to remove account protection before sale or trade-in.
- Document the condition and offer. Photograph the phone, identifiers, and accessories. Record the agreed amount, any condition deductions, and the retailer’s final offer. Factory-reset only after confirming the backup.
- Control payment and handover. For a private sale, meet in a busy public place such as a mall or café. Prefer an immediate bank transfer that appears as cleared in your own banking app; a screenshot is not proof. Do not ship before confirmed payment unless you use a trusted escrow or platform process. Let the buyer test the phone without surrendering control before payment is final. Keep the listing and conversation, and refuse unusual payment links, remote-delivery pressure, or courier requests for advance fees.
What determines a fair used-phone price?
There is no reliable universal percentage of the new price to expect. Compare the same model and storage, then adjust for condition, battery health, repair and parts history, local versus imported version, warranty, included accessories, and current stock or promotion. A shop’s resale price includes the cost of inspection, preparation, warranty, and resale; a private listing may be cheaper to buy or bring the seller more, but usually offers less recourse. Treat Marketplace asking prices as negotiation signals rather than confirmed sale values.
Retailer pages may show discounts, trade-in subsidies, or future resale percentages, but those figures are conditional and product-specific. For example, the “up to 65%” returned-device headline at Thế Giới Di Động is not a general saving, and XTmobile’s stated 90% resale feature depends on eligibility and the device’s future used value.
Buying as a foreigner or short-term visitor
Before paying, make sure the support route will still be usable for as long as you need it. Ask the store whether staff can assist in English, whether the price applies to your payment method or only to an online order or qualifying trade-in, and whether it can issue a receipt or VAT invoice. Confirm the return deadline, warranty location, and whether imported models are covered locally in writing. If you will leave Vietnam soon, a short return period or warranty requiring an HCMC visit may have little practical value.
Check the exact model’s compatibility with the SIM or eSIM you plan to use in Vietnam and at home. A retailer listing or a seller’s assurance is not a substitute for confirming the model number, network support, account status, and warranty terms.
Quick Recap
Choose by your priority
- I want the safest practical purchase: Start with CellphoneS, read the specific used-device warranty, and inspect the handset before paying.
- I want returned stock from a major chain: Compare the exact Thế Giới Di Động and FPT Shop listings against other current offers; confirm branch stock and device condition.
- I want to compare used iPhones at a specialist: Check XTmobile’s model-specific listing, then verify region, repairs, warranty, and any resale-right conditions.
- I need to sell with minimal effort: Request trade-in valuations from CellphoneS and FPT Shop, then compare the final written offers.
- I want the highest possible private-sale proceeds: Marketplace may provide more flexibility, but only proceed if you can manage inspection, a safe meeting, and confirmed payment.
- I am visiting briefly: Favor a device you can fully test, a clear receipt, and support terms usable after you leave; avoid relying on a local return or warranty you cannot practically claim.
