In Kiplinger’s comparison, using account data current as of early July 2025, Axos Bank’s Axos ONE package stood out for a high savings yield if you met its requirements; Capital One 360 Performance Savings offered a simpler no-minimum, no-monthly-fee option; and Bask Interest Checking paid interest on checking. These are historical 2025 examples, not current offers. Choose by comparing the terms that matter to your everyday banking: rate qualifications, fees, ATM and cash access, and the account features you will actually use.
Which online bank fits your priorities?
| If you prioritize… | 2025 example from Kiplinger | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| A potentially high savings yield | Axos Bank Axos ONE: up to 4.66% on savings, subject to requirements | Check every eligibility condition; “up to” is not a guaranteed rate for every customer. |
| Straightforward savings without a balance hurdle | Capital One 360 Performance Savings: 3.5%, with no balance requirement or monthly fee | Compare the historical yield with current terms and your need for cash access. |
| Interest on checking | Bask Interest Checking: 1% yield, described as having no strings attached | Confirm current yield, fees, ATM access, and any account conditions before opening. |
Kiplinger’s figures and terms above were current as of early July 2025, according to its 2025 internet-bank comparison. They should not be read as today’s rates or offers.
How to compare online banks
Kiplinger evaluated checking, savings, money-market, and CD accounts across national banks, credit unions, online banks—including online accounts from brokerage firms—and regional banks. Its criteria included rates, minimums, monthly fees and how easy they are to waive, ATM access and reimbursements, free or discounted services, overdraft fees, and online and mobile features such as peer-to-peer payments. Use those same categories to compare accounts rather than choosing a provider based on one advertised APY.
Rates and qualification rules
- Check whether the APY is variable, promotional, or limited to a balance tier.
- Look for qualifying direct deposits, required linked accounts, minimum balances, and other conditions. A headline “up to” rate may require several steps.
- Compare the rate on the specific product you need. Savings, checking, money-market accounts, and CDs serve different purposes; a CD also commits money for a term.
Fees and access to cash
- Review monthly charges and the exact balance or activity needed to avoid them.
- Check the ATM network, out-of-network fee reimbursement, and any limits on reimbursement.
- If you deposit cash, confirm how the bank accepts it. Some online banks provide in-person options, while others may not.
- Compare overdraft fees, any overdraft cushion, and how payments are handled when the balance is short.
Digital service and customer experience
Check whether the app and website support the money movement you need, including bill payments, transfers, and peer-to-peer payments, and how to reach customer service. J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Direct Banking Satisfaction Study measured customer service, ease of moving money, help growing money, trust, and account management through apps and websites. It surveyed 9,391 direct-bank customers, with fieldwork from December 2024 through March 2025. Satisfaction is a separate lens: it does not establish which account has the best rate or suits your circumstances. J.D. Power study PDF.

What the 2025 examples tell you
Axos Bank Axos ONE: potentially higher yield, more conditions
Kiplinger reported that Axos ONE could offer up to 4.66% on savings in early July 2025 if requirements were met. The article describes multiple conditions contributing to the potential yield, so verify each one in the account’s terms before treating the top rate as attainable. The figure is a dated snapshot, not a current offer. Kiplinger’s 2025 comparison.
Capital One 360 Performance Savings: no balance requirement in the 2025 example
Kiplinger listed a 3.5% yield and no balance requirement or monthly fee for 360 Performance Savings as of early July 2025. That tradeoff may suit a saver who values simpler requirements over chasing a conditional top rate. Capital One also offers in-person access through cafés, branches, and ATMs, and says customers can add cash in stores. Confirm availability and current account terms directly with the bank. Bask Interest Checking: checking yield in the 2025 snapshot
Kiplinger listed Bask Interest Checking at a 1% yield with no strings attached in early July 2025. That makes it a relevant example for someone who wants interest on checking rather than only on savings. The cited comparison does not establish current terms or provide enough information here to compare its fees and cash-access network with the other examples; check those details with Bask before deciding. How to use current account pages without confusing dates
Rates change, so treat historical recommendations as a shortlist rather than an application-ready offer. As a separate current-term example, Ally’s official rates page says its Savings APY was 3.1% as of October 1, 2026; the rate is variable, and there is no minimum opening deposit. Ally also says certain savings withdrawals and transfers are limited to ten per statement cycle. For its Spending Account, the page describes free Allpoint and MoneyPass ATM access and reimbursement of up to $10 per statement cycle for fees from other U.S. ATMs. These are Ally terms dated to that page—not 2025 comparison figures. Capital One’s account-comparison page lists 360 Checking with no fees or minimums and more than 70,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide, and 360 Performance Savings as fee-free with no minimums and FDIC-insured. The retrieved page did not provide a usable APY, so check Capital One’s live rate rather than inferring one from the 2025 figure. Capital One account comparison.

Confirm which bank holds your deposit and how it is insured; a brand name or fintech account label by itself does not establish a separate insurance limit. Capital One says deposits at Capital One or Discover Bank accounts opened on or after May 18, 2025 count with other Capital One deposits for FDIC coverage purposes. A practical shortlist before opening an account
- Decide whether you need checking, savings, a money-market account, a CD, or more than one. Keep everyday spending money distinct from savings you can leave untouched.
- Compare the live APY and read its qualifications, including direct-deposit, balance, and linked-account requirements.
- Calculate likely costs: monthly fees, out-of-network ATM charges, and overdraft-related fees.
- Confirm cash deposits, ATM access, customer-service channels, and the digital features you rely on.
- Verify the insured bank and aggregate your deposits at that bank when assessing FDIC coverage.
- Recheck the terms immediately before applying; 2025 rates and terms are historical, and current offers can differ.
