Best New Android Phones Under $200 in 2024: What to Buy and What to Check

The Moto G 5G (2024) led for everyday value, while the Galaxy A15 5G offered a better screen and longer support. Here’s how to compare 2024 phones around $200 without confusing unlocked prices with carrier deals.

For a new Android phone around $200 in the U.S. during 2024, the Motorola Moto G 5G (2024) was the strongest all-around pick for buyers who wanted responsive everyday performance, 5G, 128 GB of storage and a large battery. The Samsung Galaxy A15 5G was a better choice for its AMOLED screen and longer software support. The CMF Phone 1 offered impressive screen and performance hardware for about $199 in review-era coverage, but regional compatibility and warranty checks mattered more.

These are 2024 launch or review-era price positions, not verified prices or availability today. “Under $200” here means the phone itself, before tax and accessories, at an unlocked U.S. retail price or a clearly identified 2024 sale price—not a carrier offer whose low upfront cost depends on a plan or bill credits.

Quick picks: the best options under $200 in 2024

Pick Phone Why it stood out Main trade-off
Best overall value Motorola Moto G 5G (2024) Responsive everyday use, 5G, 128 GB storage, 5,000-mAh battery and a relatively uncluttered interface. Shorter software support than Samsung’s A15 5G.
Best for display and support Samsung Galaxy A15 5G 6.5-inch AMOLED panel, 90-Hz refresh rate and a reported commitment of four Android upgrades and five years of security updates. Some reviews found it slower than the Moto G 5G.
Best performance-and-screen hardware, where compatible CMF Phone 1 120-Hz AMOLED display and unusually capable performance for its approximately $199 entry price in review coverage. Exact U.S. model, carrier compatibility, NFC, warranty and seller need verification.
Best camera alternative Refurbished Pixel 6a or 7a May provide better still photos and processing power than a new phone at this budget. Used condition, battery health, lock status, returns and remaining updates vary by device.

Prices for the Moto G 5G and Galaxy A15 5G were positioned around $199.99 at launch; WIRED’s review-era coverage placed the CMF Phone 1’s entry configuration around $199. Those figures describe 2024 price positioning, not a continuously available price or a current offer. See Tom’s Guide’s Moto G 5G review, Android Authority’s Galaxy A15 5G review and WIRED’s budget-phone coverage.

What counts as a phone under $200?

A $199.99 sticker price can still exceed a strict $200 budget once sales tax, shipping, a case, a screen protector or a charger is added. Set the comparison around the unlocked handset price before tax, then calculate the total you will actually pay.

  • New and unlocked: The clearest comparison for a buyer choosing a phone independently of a carrier. Confirm the exact model and compatibility with your carrier.
  • Carrier-locked or subsidized: A phone advertised for $0 or $49 may require a new line, a qualifying plan, financing, bill credits, continued service or fees. Compare the full required cost over the offer period, not just the amount due on day one.
  • Refurbished or used: A separate category, with condition, battery life, warranty and update support that depend on the individual device and seller.

Do not treat a monthly installment as a phone price unless you include the plan and all required payments. A phone near the ceiling can also leave no room for the accessories or fees that make it usable and protected.

Best overall: Motorola Moto G 5G (2024)

The Moto G 5G (2024) is the best overall choice here for buyers who value a quick-feeling daily experience, a large battery and generous base storage more than a long update runway. It pairs a Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 platform with 5G, 128 GB of storage, a 5,000-mAh battery and a 120-Hz display. Android Central’s review coverage assessed its performance favorably against the Galaxy A15 5G in everyday use; that is review-based comparative judgment, not a claim that every task or configuration will behave identically. Android Central’s review and Tom’s Guide’s review discuss its usability and price positioning.

Why it makes sense for everyday use

  • 128 GB gives more breathing room for apps, photos and downloads than many entry-level configurations.
  • The 5,000-mAh capacity is substantial, though capacity alone does not establish how long a phone will last. Screen brightness, network use, software and workload all affect endurance.
  • Motorola’s interface was described in reviews as relatively uncluttered, with useful gestures; it is not stock Android.
  • Its roughly $199.99 launch positioning left little headroom in a strict budget, so check the total after tax and whether a charger is included before purchase.

Where the savings show

Motorola promised one major Android-version upgrade and three years of security updates, a shorter commitment than Samsung’s for the A15 5G. Review coverage also noted the lack of an official IP rating and cameras that were not class-leading, particularly in low light. Do not infer water protection from the phone’s price or appearance. Android Authority’s review covers its update policy and rating, while Digital Trends’ review discusses support and other limitations.

Who should buy it—and who should skip it

Choose it if you want a new, broadly capable phone for calls, messaging, streaming, browsing and everyday apps, and expect to replace it sooner rather than keep it for many years. Skip it if extended security support, strong low-light photography or an official water-resistance rating is a priority.

Best for screen quality and longer ownership: Samsung Galaxy A15 5G

The Galaxy A15 5G is the safer pick for buyers who plan to keep a phone longer and value screen quality over the snappiest performance at this price. It launched with Android 14, a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a 90-Hz refresh rate, 5G and a 5,000-mAh battery. Review coverage reported Samsung’s commitment as four Android upgrades and five years of security updates—two separate kinds of support, not a promise of five Android-version upgrades. See Android Authority and PhoneArena for review details.

The trade-off: smoother content, less speed

AMOLED makes this a strong option for video, reading and social feeds, and its 90-Hz panel can make scrolling feel smoother than a standard 60-Hz screen. Some comparative reviews found its performance below the Moto G 5G’s. The design has noticeable bezels and an inexpensive feel; cameras are adequate rather than exceptional, and Samsung’s One UI includes more preinstalled apps and visual overhead than Motorola’s interface.

Check that it is the 5G model

The Galaxy A15 name also covers a 4G version. The variants can look similar while using different processors and connectivity, so verify the listing’s exact model and that it explicitly says 5G before paying. A comparison review is available from PhoneArena.

Choose the A15 5G for streaming, reading, familiar Samsung software or a longer planned ownership period. It is also a sensible choice for a child or basic user if paired with parental controls and a protective case.

Best performance and display package, with caveats: CMF Phone 1

The CMF Phone 1 stands out for buyers who want the strongest screen-and-performance combination they can find near $200 and are comfortable checking the details before ordering. Review coverage highlighted its 120-Hz AMOLED display, capable processor, clean software, modular styling, 5,000-mAh battery, 33-W wired charging and 50-megapixel main camera. Its entry configuration was positioned at about $199 in review-era coverage from WIRED and Android Central.

Those hardware strengths do not make every listing a safe U.S. purchase. Regional specifications and availability matter, and imported devices may not have the same bands, features, service or warranty as a U.S.-market model.

Verify these details before ordering

  • Confirm the exact regional model and check its LTE and 5G bands against your carrier’s requirements.
  • Ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling support for that model; check eSIM needs if relevant.
  • Verify whether that exact variant has NFC rather than assuming tap-to-pay support.
  • Identify whether the seller is Nothing/CMF or an importer, and read the warranty and return terms.
  • Check the storage configuration and microSD support for the exact version being sold.

Imported listings can differ in carrier certification, emergency calling, update region and warranty service. If a seller cannot establish the exact model, support and return path, choose a more straightforward U.S. unlocked option instead.

Other choices: sale-priced Moto G Power and refurbished phones

Moto G Power 5G (2024)

Consider this model only if you find a legitimate 2024 offer at or below $200 and confirm whether it is unlocked or tied to a carrier. Its larger battery and upgraded features may appeal to buyers who prioritize endurance, but sale prices fluctuated, and support and camera limitations still deserve attention. The available evidence does not establish a continuously available unlocked price under $200, so it does not displace the main picks.

Refurbished Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a or older Galaxy flagship

A refurbished older phone may deliver better cameras or more processing power than a new handset at this ceiling. It is not equivalent to a new phone: battery wear, repair history, water-resistance condition and remaining software support vary by unit. Before buying, confirm the phone is unlocked and free of activation locks, ask for battery-health information, inspect for screen burn-in, check the warranty and return window, and verify how much update support remains. This route suits buyers willing to accept used-device uncertainty in exchange for stronger imaging or performance.

How to choose in 60 seconds

  • Want a responsive everyday phone with roomy storage? Start with the Moto G 5G (2024), accepting its shorter update commitment.
  • Want AMOLED and longer software support? Choose the Galaxy A15 5G, after confirming the 5G variant.
  • Want the strongest screen and performance hardware near $200? Consider the CMF Phone 1 only after checking the exact regional model, carrier support, NFC and warranty.
  • Want better photos above all? Compare a refurbished Pixel, but assess the individual device’s battery, condition, unlock status and support.
  • Need a dependable carrier fit? Prefer an unlocked U.S. model from a returnable sales channel and verify compatibility before purchase.

What to check before you pay

  1. Confirm the full price. Add tax, shipping, required plan costs, activation fees and any required financing payments. Treat a carrier’s advertised upfront price separately from an unlocked retail price.
  2. Read the exact model number. Check that the Galaxy A15 listing is 5G, and that any CMF or imported model is the regional version you intend to buy.
  3. Verify carrier compatibility. Check LTE and 5G bands, unlocked status, VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling support with the carrier. Do not assume all versions of a phone work on every U.S. network.
  4. Compare support promises. Separate major Android upgrades from security updates, and consider how long you expect to own the phone.
  5. Check storage and accessories. Confirm base storage, expansion support if needed, and whether a charger is included. Budget for a case and screen protector if you need them.
  6. Read the warranty and return terms. This is especially important for marketplace-refurbished or imported phones; make sure you can return a device that fails activation or does not match its listing.
