Which iPhone 17 Pro deal is best for you?
Best headline deal: T-Mobile, if you already qualify
T-Mobile is the first offer to check if you are already on a qualifying plan and have an eligible trade-in. Its official promotion listings include several different credit amounts and eligibility paths, rather than one universal price. The surfaced offers include credits up to $12.50 per month or up to $37.50 per month for 24 months, and a separate new-line or port-in offer up to $26.25 per month for 24 months. Those figures belong to different offers; they are not interchangeable and do not establish that every iPhone 17 Pro buyer gets the maximum.
Some surfaced terms require a new voice line or a port-in, eligible trade-in, credit approval and a qualifying plan costing $85 or more monthly with AutoPay, before taxes and fees. The right promotion depends on your account, plan, trade-in tier and promo code. Review the specific offer at checkout and ask whether your current plan and customer status qualify. T-Mobile states that canceling can stop remaining credits and leave the outstanding financed device balance due. Its terms also identify a possible $35 device connection charge. See T-Mobile’s promotional terms and its iPhone 17 Pro listing.

Best AT&T offer: $0 after qualifying credits
AT&T advertises the iPhone 17 Pro for $0 with a qualifying trade-in. Its broader offer page describes up to $1,100 off eligible iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models through 36 monthly bill credits. One displayed iPhone 17 Pro offer specifies a trade-in value of at least $290. Treat the $0 as the device cost after qualifying credits, not as a guarantee of no payment due at checkout or no service cost.
Check the exact installment, eligible plan, trade-in model and condition, and whether the offer is available for an upgrade, a new line or a port-in. AT&T says the promotion is limited to one trade-in per qualifying purchase and one credit per line. A 36-month credit schedule can be a poor fit if you expect to leave or change eligibility before the credits end. Read the iPhone offer, wireless offer terms and trade-in eligibility information.
Best for flexibility: Apple unlocked
Apple lists the unlocked 256GB iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099 outright or $45.79 per month for 24 months, before tax and any trade-in adjustment. Buying the unlocked configuration avoids tying the device discount to a carrier’s promotional-credit schedule and gives you more freedom to choose or change service. Apple also offers trade-in and financing options, subject to its current terms. The Apple buying page shows available configurations; confirm the unlocked designation on the exact listing before purchase.

Apple’s cited listing is for 256GB. Do not assume a carrier’s offer makes a higher-storage model free: any amount above the promotional credit may remain payable. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a different model, and an offer mentioning both models may have different device prices or maximum credits for each.

The available Verizon source explains common promotion mechanics, but does not establish a specific current iPhone 17 Pro discount. Verizon says device promotions generally use monthly bill credits; some existing-customer offers require the trade-in phone to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. The model and condition must match the declaration, and Activation Lock or Find My iPhone must be disabled. Verify any exact offer, term and account requirements on Verizon’s live offer page before deciding.
Best Buy’s listing shows carrier-activation and trade-in paths, but no stable final price is established here. Compare the checkout total with direct carrier and Apple pricing. Confirm whether the phone is locked, whether activation requires a new line or upgrade, how trade-in credit is delivered, and whether a retailer gift card—not a bill reduction—is part of the advertised value.

How to compare the real cost
A low phone payment is not necessarily a low-cost deal. Compare the device credits separately from the service plan, then include fees, taxes and the value you could get by selling your old phone. For a new customer or switcher, compare the proposed service against what you would otherwise pay for a comparable plan.
- Existing customer keeping the same plan: device installments minus promotional credits, plus fees and taxes, minus trade-in value. If the plan cost truly stays the same either way, focus on the device and the commitment.
- New customer or switcher: add the difference between the new plan and a comparable alternative over the full credit term, along with device cost, activation fees and taxes; then subtract credits and trade-in value.
- Phone-only buyer: use Apple’s $1,099 unlocked 256GB price as the cited benchmark before tax and trade-in, then compare any unlocked retailer price that is clearly documented.
For a carrier deal, ask for the installment amount before credits, monthly credit amount, credit duration and total due today. A monthly credit reduces the effective device cost only while you meet its terms. An instant trade-in credit reduces the purchase or financed balance at once; a retailer gift card has value but is not the same as cash off the device or service bill.

What can make a “free” phone expensive?
Higher service charges
If a promotion requires a more expensive plan than you would otherwise buy, calculate that difference across the whole credit term. For example, compare the extra monthly cost of the required plan over 24 or 36 months with the device savings. A free-phone headline can lose its advantage if the added service cost exceeds the credits.

Leaving, changing plans or upgrading early
Promotional credits usually depend on ongoing eligibility. T-Mobile says canceling can stop remaining credits and make the outstanding device-finance balance due. Verizon’s FAQ likewise describes monthly credits and conditions tied to eligible service. Before changing plans, canceling, or upgrading early, ask the carrier in writing what happens to the remaining device balance and credits. An early-upgrade program is not automatically the same as a promotional-credit offer.
Trade-in condition, payoff and timing
Get the exact eligible-device list and condition rules for the specific promotion. Do not assume “any condition” applies across carriers or retailers. Ask whether your old phone must be paid off, when it must be surrendered, and how a lower condition assessment changes the credit. Take photographs, record the device’s condition and keep the trade-in receipt and tracking details. If you might sell privately, compare the expected sale proceeds with the carrier’s total trade-in value; do not count the same phone’s value twice.
Taxes, fees and returns
A zero net device price does not necessarily mean zero due today. Sales tax may be charged on the full device price, and carrier activation or connection charges may apply. Confirm the tax basis and all one-time fees at checkout. Before trading in an old phone, read the return and trade-in terms: returning the new device may not automatically undo a completed trade-in, and the carrier may reverse credits or bill a remaining balance under its terms.

- Decide whether you need an unlocked phone. If you expect to change carriers, use a lower-cost provider or travel with a local SIM, start with Apple’s unlocked configuration and verify its exact listing.
- Check your existing account first. Ask T-Mobile or AT&T whether your current line and plan qualify without adding a line or moving to a costlier plan.
- Get the offer in writing. Record the promotion identifier, eligible plan, trade-in model and condition, credit amount and length, and what happens if service changes.
- Calculate service as well as the phone. For a switcher, include the plan-cost difference across all 24 or 36 months, plus one-time charges and taxes.
- Compare trade-in with private sale. Use the net value you can realistically receive after effort and risk, and account for whether the carrier’s trade-in credit is immediate or spread across bills.
- Verify the final order details. Check storage, lock status, due-today amount, return window, and any state or ZIP-code restrictions before submitting payment.
Choose T-Mobile first if you already qualify and plan to stay through its 24-month credits; compare AT&T if its trade-in and plan rules fit, bearing in mind the 36-month term. Choose Apple if freedom to switch and a known unlocked price matter more than the largest headline discount. If neither carrier’s required plan is one you would otherwise keep, the unlocked price may be the more economical decision.
