What Halloween candy should you hand out?
A mix of individually wrapped chocolate and fruit-flavored or chewy candy is a practical way to offer variety without betting on one supposed universal favorite. It reflects the range of categories households planned to hand out in Circana’s 2025 survey, rather than an independent taste test.
For examples of familiar options, Mars Wrigley’s seasonal 2025 list includes Snickers, M&M’s, Twix, Skittles, Starburst, Milky Way, and 3 Musketeers. That is a manufacturer’s promotional guidance, not a neutral ranking of the best brands. Choose based on your budget, local availability, serving format, and the ingredient information on the actual package; the available sources do not establish prices or current stock.
What the 2025 popularity figures do—and don’t—show
Circana reported that U.S. households spent $4.5 billion on candy during the four weeks leading up to Halloween 2025. In its survey, 58% of households planned to take part in trick-or-treat or trunk-or-treat festivities. Among households planning to hand out treats, 75% said they would opt for chocolate candies, 59% for gummy, chewy, or sour candies, and 36% for hard candies. Respondents could choose more than one category, so these percentages are not exclusive shares and should not be added together.

These are survey findings about planned categories, not controlled taste-test results, proof of what children prefer, or a ranking of candy brands. They support offering a choice; they do not establish one objectively “best” candy.
How to choose a mix that works for your household
- Offer different types: Pair chocolate with a fruit-flavored or chewy choice if you want variety.
- Check the serving format: Individually wrapped fun-size or mini portions are easy to distribute. Mars Wrigley recommends keeping candy in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Read the current package: Ingredients, precautionary statements, and product formulations can change. Do not infer that a candy is safe for a particular person based on its brand or category.
- Consider age: Avoid candy and small items that could pose choking hazards for very young children.
- Plan for your block: Quantity, storage, and what is available locally matter more than a purported national brand winner.
Allergies: check the label, not the brand name
Circana reported that one-third of U.S. households said food allergens influence their Halloween plans. The survey says these households are more likely to hand out other candies or gum than chocolate or peanut-butter and nut candy, and some choose non-food items. That is a reason to consider alternatives, not a way to identify a treat as safe for any individual child.

The FDA identifies nine major food allergens in the United States: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Sesame became the ninth major allergen effective January 1, 2023. For Halloween treats, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises reading the ingredient label on each item; common allergens in popular candy can include peanuts and tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, and wheat. Follow an individual child’s allergy care plan rather than relying on a general candy list.
Kids with Food Allergies, a division of AAFA, lists products such as Dum-Dums, Skittles, and YumEarth Organic Pops in its February 2026 guide. It is a product guide, not a guarantee that an item is safe for every allergy or that its formulation has not changed. Check the package every time. When to skip candy or add a non-food option
Non-food treats can give households another choice. The AAP suggests items such as glow sticks, spider rings, pencils, bubbles, bouncy balls, finger puppets, whistles, bookmarks, stickers, and stencils. The FDA also names small toys as a choking hazard for very young children, so select age-appropriate items.
If you do hand out candy, choose commercially wrapped treats. FDA guidance says, “Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home.” It advises discarding commercially wrapped items that look suspicious or show discoloration, pinholes, or tears, and says, “In case of a food allergy, check the label to ensure the allergen isn’t present.” Read the FDA’s Halloween safety tips for the full advice.

What to skip when choosing Halloween candy
- Unsupported “best brand” claims: The 2025 evidence here is a category survey and a manufacturer’s seasonal list, not an independent comparison of candy brands.
- Blanket “allergy-safe” labels: No brand or candy category is automatically safe for every child; use the current package and the family’s care instructions.
- Unwrapped or damaged treats: Skip items without commercial wrapping or with suspicious appearance, discoloration, pinholes, or tears.
- Choking hazards for very young children: FDA specifically lists gum, peanuts, hard candies, and small toys.
- Claims that candy is health food: The ADA notes a relative dental distinction between chocolate and stickier candies, but that is not an endorsement of unlimited candy. Its Halloween candy guide offers dental-health context.
