Do not assume a lower sticker price is enough: a refurbished or marketplace phone can carry different warranty, return, carrier-compatibility, and activation-lock risks than a new U.S. retail model.
How to calculate the real deal price
Use the full cost you expect to pay, including plan changes. A headline discount or “free phone” label is not a savings calculation.

Effective cost = phone price + required plan premium + activation or upgrade fees − guaranteed trade-in value − immediately usable gift-card or bundle value
Count a gift card only at the amount you are confident you will use. Do not count conditional bill credits as an upfront discount: credits may stop if you cancel service or leave before the financing term ends. Taxes may be charged on the full retail price, and the cheapest advertised configuration may have less storage or require activation.
Example: compare a carrier offer with your existing plan
Suppose a carrier advertises a $1,000 phone discount as monthly bill credits over 36 months, but requires a plan that costs $20 more each month than your existing plan. The plan premium alone is $720 over 36 months. Before taxes, fees, trade-in value, or the risk of leaving early, the offer’s effective savings are at most $280 ($1,000 in credits minus $720 in extra plan cost). If you leave before all credits post, the actual savings can be lower. Substitute the real plan difference, term, fees, and guaranteed credit for your own offer.

Choose storage for the way you use your phone
- 256GB: A practical baseline for many flagship buyers, especially if photos and videos are backed up and large media libraries are not kept entirely on-device.
- 512GB: Consider it if you record a lot of high-resolution video, install large games, or plan to keep extensive files locally for years. Compare the extra cost with cloud storage or regular offloading.
- 1TB: Most useful for professional media work or unusually large local libraries. Do not pay for it simply because it is the biggest option.
Compare the exact price gap between tiers on the model you plan to buy. Storage prices vary, and a discounted phone with less storage can be a worse value than a slightly more expensive configuration.
