There is no best family cell phone plan for every household. For a four-line family, current examples range from US Mobile Unlimited Starter at $100 per month to AT&T Extra 2.0 at $160 per month, but price alone does not show how much high-speed data or hotspot each line gets, what discounts apply, or whether coverage works where your family uses its phones. Compare the full bill and the terms that matter to your household before switching.

What to compare before choosing a family plan

Start with the household’s actual line count and locations, then compare plan terms rather than relying on a per-line headline price. Carrier prices and promotions can change; the figures below were checked on October 4, 2026, and should be confirmed with the carrier before enrollment.

  • Total household cost: Check the current quote for your number of lines, and whether taxes and fees are included. AutoPay requirements, switcher discounts, annual prepayment and internet bundles can change the amount paid.
  • Data rules: “Unlimited” does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed data. Check the premium or high-speed allowance and whether speeds may slow when the network is busy.
  • Hotspot: Compare the data allowance per line, not only whether hotspot is advertised as included.
  • Local coverage: Verify service at home, school, work and regular travel destinations. A national coverage claim cannot tell you how a carrier performs at a particular address.
  • Useful extras: Consider international use, streaming, and smartwatch or tablet discounts only if your family will use them.
  • Payment structure: Annual prepaid plans may reduce the effective monthly cost but require more money up front. A cable-mobile bundle may be worthwhile if you already want that provider’s home internet; compare the combined bill.

For a different number of lines, get a fresh carrier quote rather than multiplying a four-line rate: discounts and eligibility can change with line count.

Four-line plan examples and stated terms

The following figures are four-line examples from carrier pages or the named editorial comparison. Carrier-authored rankings and promotional prices are not independent proof that a plan is best for your family.

Plan Four-line price and conditions Data and hotspot terms stated Important qualification
US Mobile Unlimited Starter $100/month total, or $25 per line, at the regular monthly rate, according to US Mobile’s September 2026 comparison. 20GB hotspot per line, according to the carrier’s comparison table. US Mobile ranks this as its overall recommendation. The ranking is carrier-authored; confirm current terms, network access, taxes and any transfer limits with the carrier.
US Mobile Unlimited Premium $176/month total, or $44 per line, according to US Mobile’s September 2026 comparison. Unlimited hotspot per line, according to the carrier’s comparison table. Carrier-listed price and features; confirm current terms before enrollment.
AT&T Extra 2.0 $160/month total, or $40 per line, for four lines on AT&T’s page. 100GB high-speed data before AT&T may temporarily slow speeds when its network is busy; 50GB hotspot per line each month. The plan description includes use in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. AT&T’s displayed terms; confirm the current quote and applicable taxes and fees.
AT&T Value Plus offer $25/month per line for four lines on the limited-time offer displayed by AT&T. Not stated in the cited offer details. AT&T says the prevailing plan price applies after 36 months and that prices may change during that period. Check offer eligibility and terms before relying on the rate.
Verizon Simplicity $45/month per line with AutoPay; $30/month per line with the stated switch discount and AutoPay. Unlimited premium data and 10GB mobile hotspot, according to Verizon’s comparison. Verizon says Simplicity launched in June 2026. The $30 rate requires the stated new-customer/switch discount; confirm eligibility, duration, fees and current pricing. Verizon’s network-performance claims are carrier-authored.
T-Mobile Experience More Tom’s Guide lists $53.75 per line for a four-line family; US Mobile lists $220/month total, or $55 per line, in its September 2026 comparison. US Mobile’s comparison describes 60GB hotspot per line and streaming credits. The two published prices differ, and the official T-Mobile page’s readable terms were not available for this comparison. Check T-Mobile’s current checkout for price, AutoPay assumptions, taxes and fees, and line promotions rather than treating either figure as definitive.
Total Wireless Total Max 5G Tom’s Guide lists $27.50 per line in its comparison for four lines. Not stated in the cited comparison details. Confirm current total cost and plan terms with the provider.
Verizon Unlimited Plus Tom’s Guide lists $40 per line in its four-line comparison. Not stated in the cited comparison details. Confirm current price and terms with Verizon.
Mint Mobile 6GB Tom’s Guide lists an effective $15 per month per line with annual payment. Its example totals $720 for four lines for a year at that effective rate. 6GB plan allocation; families can mix data allocations by line, according to Tom’s Guide. The $15 figure is an effective monthly rate tied to annual payment, not a month-to-month bill. Tom’s Guide says the annual example maintains that rate after the initial three-month period; check current terms and payment amount.

For carrier figures, see US Mobile’s September 2026 family-plan comparison, AT&T’s wireless plans, Verizon’s plan comparison and T-Mobile’s Experience plans page. The four-line editorial examples are in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison.

How to decide which plan fits your family

Choose a lower-cost option if its limits fit

US Mobile’s $100 four-line Starter example is a useful starting point for a price-conscious household, but its 20GB hotspot allowance per line and the carrier’s network terms should fit your needs. Do not treat the carrier’s “overall recommendation” as a universal verdict.

Pay more for allowances you will use

AT&T Extra 2.0 lists 100GB of high-speed data and 50GB of hotspot per line, with a possible slowdown when its network is busy after the high-speed allowance. Verizon Simplicity lists unlimited premium data and 10GB of hotspot per line, but its pricing depends on AutoPay and, at the lower rate, a switch discount. Compare the specific allowances with each person’s use instead of assuming that a plan described as unlimited will perform identically in every situation.

Treat promotions and prepaid rates as conditional

AT&T’s displayed Value Plus rate is a limited-time offer, with the prevailing plan price applying after 36 months and the possibility of price changes during that period. Verizon’s lower Simplicity rate is tied to its stated switch discount and AutoPay. Mint’s listed $15 monthly equivalent is based on annual payment. In each case, use the rate only if your family qualifies and can meet the payment conditions.

Check family-specific flexibility and bundles

US Mobile says family lines can choose separately among its Warp 5G, Dark Star and Light Speed networks. This can help if different household members have different coverage needs, but verify current access and any transfer limits. US Mobile’s comparison also identifies cable-provider mobile plans at approximately $30 per line for four lines when bundled with related home internet. Compare the combined internet-and-wireless cost, and count the bundle as savings only if you would otherwise subscribe to that internet service.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. List the users and locations. Note each person’s typical data and hotspot use, then identify home, school, work and regular travel locations where coverage matters.
  2. Get a quote for the exact line count. Record the household total, per-line arithmetic, taxes and fees, AutoPay requirements, discounts, and any bundle or annual-payment condition.
  3. Compare data and hotspot line by line. Write down each plan’s high-speed or premium-data allowance, slowdown rule and hotspot amount per line.
  4. Check benefits that affect your family’s spending. Verify international use, streaming credits and device discounts, but do not assign value to extras no one will use.
  5. Confirm coverage and terms with the carrier. Check local coverage and read the current offer conditions before porting numbers or paying in advance.
