There is no single best crypto exchange for every Dutch resident. Start by checking the provider’s legal entity and whether its current authorization or notification covers the service you want in the Netherlands. Then compare the total cost of your intended transaction, EUR funding options, supported assets and withdrawal features. A brand name or an old ranking is not enough to establish that a service is currently available on the right terms.
Which crypto exchanges can serve customers in the Netherlands?
Check the AFM crypto-provider register for the provider’s legal entity, not just the name shown in its app or advertising. The register includes providers authorized or notified by the AFM or another EU supervisor. The activities shown for an entity indicate what it may provide in the Netherlands; a listing for one activity should not be treated as approval for every service marketed under the same brand.
MiCAR covers a range of crypto-asset services, including custody and administration, operating a trading platform, exchanging crypto for funds or other crypto, executing or transmitting orders, advice, portfolio management and transfers. The AFM’s MiCAR guidance explains these service categories and the authorization or notification routes. Match the register entry to what you plan to do—for example, buying crypto, using a trading platform or having assets held in custody.
The Dutch transition period for providers relying on the former DNB regime ended on 30 June 2025. The AFM said authorization or notification requirements applied from 30 December 2024, with that transition ending six months later; historical DNB registration is therefore not a substitute for checking a current entry. See the AFM transition announcement and its current register information.

How to compare exchanges for your needs
Once a provider’s status and relevant service scope check out, compare the same transaction across providers. A low advertised trading fee may not mean a low overall cost if the exchange rate includes a spread or funding and withdrawal charges apply.
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Legal status and service scope | Exact contracting entity, regulator or notification route, and activities shown for it in the relevant register. | A brand may use different entities or offer services beyond the activity covered by a particular entry. |
| Total transaction cost | Trading or conversion fee, any disclosed spread or markup, EUR deposit and withdrawal charges, and crypto withdrawal or network fees. | Compare the cost of the transaction you would actually make, including moving the asset off the platform if that is your plan. |
| EUR access | Whether a Netherlands-based account can use SEPA, iDEAL or another funding method; its timing, limits and charges; and EUR withdrawal terms. | Funding options and fees can vary by account, payment method and provider. |
| Assets and products | Coins and EUR pairs available to Dutch accounts; whether the offer is spot trading or also includes derivatives, staking, lending or other products. | Availability and terms can differ by product, and higher-risk features should not be mistaken for ordinary crypto purchases. |
| Custody and transfers | Who holds the assets, withdrawal controls, supported networks, and whether you can send crypto to a wallet you control. | Network choice and withdrawal rules affect both cost and the practical ability to take custody yourself. |
| Usability and support | Interface and language, support access, account restrictions, and any limits that apply to Dutch customers. | A service that is inexpensive on paper may not suit your experience level or how you need to manage the account. |
Use the provider’s current Netherlands-specific terms and fee schedule to fill in this comparison. Fees, payment methods, asset availability and product access can change; do not assume a figure shown in an old comparison applies to your account today.

How to check a provider before opening an account
- Identify the contracting entity. Find the legal company named in the account terms, not only the exchange’s consumer-facing brand.
- Search the AFM register. Match that entity to its entry and read the listed status and activities. If it is not there, check whether the relevant EU register or regulator entry is applicable; do not infer Dutch service permission from an unrelated brand listing.
- Match the activity to your intended use. Confirm that the entry covers the service you need, such as custody, exchange or trading-platform access. The AFM’s service-provider guidance describes the categories.
- Check the provider’s terms for Dutch accounts. Verify current EUR funding and withdrawal methods, fees, assets, supported networks, custody arrangements and any product restrictions.
- Compare the full transaction path. Add the purchase or conversion cost to any funding, withdrawal and network charges relevant to your plan, rather than selecting on a headline fee alone.
What MiCAR status does—and does not—tell you
A provider’s authorization or notification is a regulatory status for specified services. It is not an endorsement of a coin, a recommendation to invest, a guarantee that the provider will remain solvent, or protection against losses when crypto prices fall.
The AFM cautions that crypto-assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are generally not themselves under its ordinary supervision, even as MiCAR brings oversight to some crypto-asset service providers. Its consumer guidance on crypto outside AFM supervision explains why provider oversight should not be confused with safety of an investment or of every product feature.

When to consider holding crypto in your own wallet
If you prefer not to leave longer-term holdings with an exchange, you can consider transferring them to a wallet you control. A hardware wallet is one option, but self-custody shifts responsibility to you: you must set it up correctly, protect and back up its recovery phrase, and check the destination address and network before transferring. A mistaken transfer or lost recovery phrase can create risks that an exchange account’s recovery process might otherwise handle.
