Best Color-Changing Lipsticks: What to Know Before You Buy

Color-changing lip products can leave a pink or red tint, but they do not detect mood or reliably make a unique shade for each wearer. Compare formats and dated listed prices, and check current formulas and stock before buying.

Color-changing lip products can leave a real pink or red tint on your lips, but they do not read your mood or reliably create a different, uniquely personalized shade for each person. The change comes from dyes that respond to moisture; the apparent “custom” effect is largely about how sheerly the color goes on and how much you build it up.

Below is a price-aware comparison of products named in published coverage, with an important limit: those sources do not establish current stock, exact current formulas, or hands-on wear results. Treat the listed prices as dated reference points, not a live shopping quote.

How color-changing lipstick works

A common colorant is Red 27 (CI 45410, also called Phloxine B). Michelle Wong of Lab Muffin Beauty Science explains that it can be colorless in a water-free product but changes to a pink form in a wet environment. On lips, it is almost certainly in that pink form; its sheer payoff can make the result look subtle at first and deepen with additional layers. That is not evidence that it is measuring an individual wearer’s pH or generating a reliably unique shade. Lab Muffin’s explanation of the chemistry also notes that Red 21 (CI 45380) is a less common, warmer-toned dye that turns pink or red when wet.

BBC Science Focus science writer and food-chemistry PhD Dr Emma Davies puts the marketing claim plainly: “Despite the marketing, colour change has absolutely nothing to do with mood and everything to do with acidity (pH).” The more specific practical point is that moisture-activated Red 27 is already expected to be pink on lips, so “mood lipstick” is a marketing phrase, not an emotion detector. BBC Science Focus explains the question; Lab Muffin adds the formulation context.

Color-changing lip products compared

The products below are examples named in Lab Muffin’s discussion or Marie Claire’s April 7, 2026 roundup. The roundup’s listed prices are the publisher’s prices at publication, not verified current prices. Neither source establishes a controlled wear comparison, present-day availability, or the exact current ingredient list for each item.

Product Format / positioning in the cited coverage Price reported by Marie Claire (April 7, 2026) What to verify before buying
Dior Addict Lip Glow Lip Balm Lip balm; named by Lab Muffin and Marie Claire $42 Current shade, ingredient list, price and stock. Some Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil ingredient lists include Red 21 and Red 27 under “may contain”; do not assume every shade or product in the line has the same formula.
Winky Lux Flower Balm Lip balm; Lab Muffin identifies it as a Red 27 product Not stated by Marie Claire Current ingredient list, exact shade, price and availability.
Byoma Liptide PH Lip Balm pH-branded lip balm; included in Marie Claire’s roundup $13 Current formula, shade, price and availability; the name alone does not establish a unique wearer-specific result.
Tom Ford Soleil Lip Blush Balm Luxury balm; included in Marie Claire’s roundup $62 Current formula, shade, price and stock. The price is a roundup-listed figure, not a current offer.
Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm Drugstore balm; included in Marie Claire’s roundup $7 Exact product and shade, since product names and ranges can vary by market; check current formula, price and availability.
Urban Decay Lip Toy Lip-stain format; included in Marie Claire’s roundup $24 Exact shade and current listing, formula, price and stock.

Marie Claire’s descriptions and prices are editorial roundup information, not independent performance measurements. Product photographs are useful only when they show the exact product and shade being discussed; package color alone does not establish the color payoff on lips. How to choose one without overpaying

Compare what matters to your use rather than the “custom” label. A balm, oil, gloss and stain can feel and wear differently, but the cited product coverage does not provide a comparable wear test or verified comfort ranking. Check the retailer’s current listing and the product’s own ingredient label before deciding.

  • Color payoff: Look for clear, shade-specific swatches on lips and note whether the result is sheer, buildable, or opaque. Do not treat a clear, blue, or green package as proof of a distinct final shade.
  • Format and finish: Choose balm for a balm format, oil or gloss for a shinier format, or stain if you want a stain-type product. Confirm the exact finish and comfort claims for the current product; they are not established uniformly by the available comparisons.
  • Formula and colorants: Check the ingredient list for the exact shade and product. Red 27 and Red 21 are examples, not a guarantee that every item marketed as color-changing uses the same dye.
  • Total cost and availability: Compare the live price, size, shipping and stock at the retailer. The dated roundup prices above should not be used as current quotes.
  • Photos: Prefer images that identify the exact shade and show it applied, since a product’s appearance in the tube or pan is not the same as its result on lips.

What U.S. cosmetic rules say

In the United States, lipstick is makeup and a cosmetic. FDA says cosmetics and their ingredients generally do not require premarket FDA approval, but products must be safe when used as directed or customarily used, and color additives must be approved for their intended use. That intended-use rule matters for lip products: an additive allowed only in externally applied cosmetics is not automatically authorized for lipstick. FDA says pigments that change in response to pH, oxygen, or temperature are subject to the same color-additive rules as other cosmetics. FDA’s makeup overview and its color-additives fact sheet explain the requirements.

FDA reports that over 99% of cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics in its data contained lead below 10 parts per million (ppm), and recommends a maximum of 10 ppm lead as an impurity in those cosmetics. These are population-level data and guidance, not test results or a safety certification for any specific product listed above. FDA’s lead-in-cosmetics page provides the details.
