For a personal lookup, a people-search service such as Spokeo, BeenVerified, Intelius, TruthFinder, or Instant Checkmate may help find contact details and public-record leads. For hiring or tenant selection, use a screening provider built for that regulated process—not a consumer people-search subscription—and follow the required disclosure, consent, and notice rules.
These products are not interchangeable. A people-search result can be incomplete or attached to the wrong person, and it is not a definitive criminal-record report. The right choice depends first on what you plan to do with the information.
Best background check sites by use case
| Service | Best suited to | What the available information supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spokeo | Personal contact and public-record discovery; potentially a one-off lookup | July 2026 comparison coverage reported membership at about $29.95 per month and said per-report purchasing may be available. | That reported price is not a guaranteed checkout total. It is not a substitute for employment or tenant screening. |
| BeenVerified | Personal people searches and reverse-lookup research | Comparison coverage has highlighted vehicle-related searches. | Current official pricing and the precise scope of each report were not established here; verify both before paying. |
| Intelius | Personal people-search and public-record discovery | A consumer-search option, rather than a recommendation for regulated screening. | Current official pricing was not established here. Do not use a consumer report to make an employment or housing decision. |
| TruthFinder | Personal people-search research | Selected as a personal-search option in Money’s July 2026 comparison. | The FTC announced a 2023 settlement with TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate involving allegations about report accuracy, deceptive marketing, and FCRA violations. See the FTC announcement. |
| Instant Checkmate | Personal people-search research | Consumer people-search service. | Covered by the same FTC 2023 settlement announcement as TruthFinder; not a choice for regulated screening. |
| Checkr | Employer screening and dedicated tenant-screening workflows | Official pricing listed employment packages and separate tenant packages as of August 18, 2026. | Pass-through court, DMV, and third-party fees may apply. Confirm the exact product, checks, and workflow for your use. |
| GoodHire | Business employment screening | Official pricing listed per-check packages as of August 18, 2026, with custom options based on volume. | Annual volume can affect pricing; verify included searches and any additional fees. |
| Backgrounds Online | Employers seeking package choices that include court searches and verification options | Its products page listed Basic, Standard, and Comprehensive packages as of August 18, 2026. | County-court and third-party verification fees may apply. Confirm the provider’s current workflow and dispute process before relying on it. |
| TransUnion SmartMove | Landlords seeking a tenant-focused screening product | A dedicated tenant-screening alternative to a general people-search subscription. | Check the current package, who pays, and how applicant authorization and adverse-action notices are handled. |
| RentPrep | Landlords seeking rental-focused screening | A tenant-screening-oriented alternative. | Verify current checks, pricing, applicant consent process, and applicable housing-law requirements. |
These are use-case recommendations, not accuracy rankings. The available information does not establish that any listed provider finds more records or produces more accurate results than its competitors. Money’s July 2026 comparison selected TruthFinder for personal searches, Backgrounds Online for employment and tenant screening, BeenVerified for vehicle searches, and Spokeo for budget searches; those are editorial selections, not independent proof of superior accuracy. See Money’s comparison.
People-search sites are not employment or tenant screening
People-search services aggregate information that may help identify a person, locate contact details, or find leads in public records. Depending on the provider and search, these services may surface address history, phone or email details, relatives or associates, or links to public records. They do not necessarily retrieve complete court files, verify a record’s disposition, or confirm that a result belongs to the person you searched.

Employment and tenant screening are different. Reports used to decide eligibility for a job or housing can be subject to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The FTC explains that a company that assembles or evaluates consumer information for employment, housing, credit, insurance, or similar eligibility decisions may have consumer-reporting obligations. A website disclaimer does not by itself make a report suitable for those decisions. Read the FTC’s FCRA guidance for employment screening companies and its employer background-check guidance.
In September 2023, the FTC announced a $5.8 million settlement with TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate over allegations involving inaccurate reports, deceptive marketing, and FCRA violations. The announcement describes allegations and the settlement; it is a reason to weigh their regulatory history, not evidence that every search they return is wrong. See the FTC case record.
Employment screening: compare packages and total cost
For hiring, choose a provider and product intended for employment screening, then use the required compliance workflow. “Background check” can mean very different things: a database index, a county courthouse search, identity matching, or direct employment and education verification. A package name alone does not tell you which records are searched or how they are checked.

The published Basic, Essential, and Complete starting prices on the Checkr and GoodHire pages were identical in the cited comparison. That similarity alone does not establish shared infrastructure, ownership, or equivalent service. Compare the checks included, candidate experience, integrations, dispute process, service terms, and total fees rather than assuming the packages are interchangeable.
Tenant screening: use a rental-focused process
A landlord needs information relevant to a rental decision, such as identity, credit, rental or eviction history, and—in some products—criminal history or income and employment verification. Which checks are available depends on the provider and package. A general people-search report is not a substitute for a tenant-screening report or the landlord’s legal obligations.

Compare dedicated products such as Checkr Tenant, TransUnion SmartMove, or RentPrep by checking what is included, whether the applicant authorizes the report, who pays, and whether the service supports the notices and dispute steps your process requires. The CFPB maintains a list of consumer reporting companies, including providers in employment and tenant screening, and explains how consumers can request reports and dispute information.
If a landlord rejects an applicant—or imposes a higher deposit or rent, requires a co-signer, or takes another unfavorable action based wholly or partly on a consumer report—the applicant generally must receive an adverse-action notice identifying the reporting company. See the FTC’s tenant background-check rights guide. State and local housing rules may add requirements.

- Personal lookup: Compare people-search services for the specific task—such as finding an address, checking a phone number, or locating public-record leads. Treat results as clues, not verified facts.
- Hiring: Use an employment-screening product designed for that purpose. Confirm the provider’s workflow for disclosure, written authorization, disputes, and adverse action, and check state and local rules.
- Tenant selection: Use a tenant-screening product and follow applicable consent, notice, and housing-law requirements. Confirm the report covers the categories you actually need.
- Checking yourself: A people-search site may reveal public-facing listings, but it does not show every report held by consumer reporting companies. Request reports from relevant companies and verify disputed source records with the court or agency.
- One lookup only: Check whether a one-time report is actually available and what it costs. If the purchase requires membership, inspect the renewal date, billing frequency, trial conversion, and cancellation confirmation before submitting payment.

How to evaluate a background-check result
Do not treat a database hit as proof that the person you searched has a particular history. Similar names, stale addresses, aliases, duplicated entries, and incomplete data can all produce misleading results. A national criminal database is generally an index or pointer, not a replacement for searches of the relevant county or court records. Online court coverage and update timing vary by jurisdiction.
- Check identity: Compare full name, age or date of birth, current and former locations, and known aliases. Do not rely on a name match alone.
- Find the source record: When possible, open the underlying court or government record and note the jurisdiction, case number, and filing date.
- Read the disposition: Distinguish an arrest or charge from a dismissal, acquittal, or conviction. A database entry without a current disposition is not enough to establish an outcome.
- Look for duplicates or mismatches: Check whether the same event is listed more than once or appears to belong to someone with a different identity.
- Use the required dispute process: For a report used in a regulated decision, follow the reporting company’s dispute procedure and applicable notice rules before acting.
The FTC identifies wrong-person matches, duplicate offenses, and sealed or expunged records as accuracy concerns for employment screening reports. A “no results” screen is not proof that no record exists: coverage can omit aliases or jurisdictions, and court data may be incomplete or delayed. See the FTC’s FCRA guidance.

When screening an employee
Before obtaining a consumer report for employment, employers generally must provide a clear, standalone disclosure and obtain written authorization. If a report may lead to an adverse decision, the employer must provide the report and a summary of rights before taking final action, allow a reasonable opportunity to dispute inaccuracies, and then send an adverse-action notice if it proceeds. The notice identifies the reporting company and explains the person’s rights. Review the FTC guide to employment background-check rights and applicable state and municipal rules. Requirements can also restrict when criminal or credit information may be considered.

When screening a tenant
Housing decisions based wholly or partly on a consumer report carry adverse-action notice obligations, including when the applicant is offered housing on less favorable terms. Check the reporting company’s dispute process and the rules that apply in the property’s jurisdiction; do not assume a people-search service or a free court lookup satisfies those obligations.
When using a personal people-search service
The legality of a search depends in part on its purpose and use. A personal lookup is not automatically illegal, but consumer people-search reports should not be used to decide eligibility for employment, housing, credit, insurance, or similar purposes. A disclaimer on a site does not override the law or make a report appropriate for a regulated decision.
What background-check sites cost—and what to inspect
Consumer people-search pricing can change and may depend on the path through the purchase flow. July 2026 comparison coverage reported Spokeo membership at approximately $29.95 per month and noted the possibility of paying per report. It did not establish current official pricing for every consumer provider, so treat the figure as a comparison signal, not a guaranteed checkout price. See Money’s July 2026 comparison.
For employment and tenant services, a per-report starting price may not include every court retrieval or verification. Checkr says certain third-party court and database access fees may be passed through at cost; its fee overview explains those charges. For any service, review the checkout screen and terms for:

- Which report and searches are actually included, and which are add-ons.
- County court, DMV, or other third-party pass-through fees, plus applicable taxes.
- Billing frequency, renewal date, and whether cancellation prevents the next renewal or ends access immediately.
- How to cancel and whether the provider issues confirmation; deleting an app or browser history does not cancel a subscription.
- Whether a refund is available and how it is calculated; do not assume a prorated refund.
Opting out of a people-search listing may remove or suppress that site’s public-facing profile, but it does not necessarily correct the underlying court record or remove information held by other companies. If the source record itself is wrong, contact the court or agency responsible for it as well as the reporting company.
How to correct an inaccurate report
- Save a copy of the report and identify the exact entry you believe is wrong.
- Contact the reporting company’s dispute department and explain the mismatch or error; include relevant documentation.
- Ask the company to investigate and correct or remove inaccurate information, then review the revised report.
- If the underlying court or government record is wrong, contact that source directly. Correcting one aggregator listing may not update other databases.
- If the dispute is not resolved, consider submitting a complaint to the CFPB or FTC and seek advice about any rights or deadlines that apply to your situation.
For regulated employment screening, the person being screened should receive the required report and a chance to dispute it before a final adverse decision. The CFPB company list can help identify reporting companies and request-report procedures.
