There is no single best American Express card for everyone. The right choice depends on your eligible spending, whether you prefer cash back or points, how often you travel, and whether you will use enough benefits to justify any annual fee. This U.S.-focused guide compares representative Amex cards and explains how to choose; offers and terms can change, so confirm them in the linked live disclosures before applying.

How to choose an American Express card

Start with the card’s ongoing value, not its welcome offer. Compare the annual fee, qualifying spend and time window for any offer, reward categories and caps, redemption options, travel or brand perks, and the APR. American Express’s card comparison guide recommends matching features to your lifestyle and spending preferences. It also notes that APRs vary with market conditions, creditworthiness, and other factors considered when an account opens.

  • Estimate your eligible spending. A headline rate applies only to qualifying purchases, and some categories have annual caps. Check how the issuer defines each category and what happens after the cap.
  • Choose the reward type you will use. Cash back on Amex cards is issued as Reward Dollars redeemable as a statement credit. Membership Rewards points have several possible uses, including travel, gift cards, statement charges, and partner transfers; redemption value depends on how you use them.
  • Count benefits only if you can use them. A statement credit is not the same as cash if it requires a specific eligible booking. Likewise, lounge access has little value if you rarely visit an included airport or lounge.
  • Do not overspend for a bonus. Treat a welcome offer as an extra, not a reason to charge purchases you would not otherwise make. You may not receive the displayed offer, and eligibility can vary.
  • If you might carry a balance, check the APR first. Interest charges can outweigh rewards. Review the product’s current Rates & Fees disclosure for the rate that applies to your application.

Representative Amex cards at a glance

The following examples reflect American Express U.S. product pages accessed October 3, 2026. They are not a complete card ranking, and the issuer can change terms and offers. Confirm each product page and its Rates & Fees disclosure before applying.

Card Annual fee and rewards Offer or benefits shown May suit
American Express Gold Card $325 annual fee. 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide on up to $50,000 in purchases; 4X at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000; and 5X on prepaid hotel stays booked through Amex Travel. Page showed an offer as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards points after $8,000 in purchases in the first six months. Offers vary and may not be available to every applicant. People with substantial qualifying dining or U.S. supermarket spending who value Membership Rewards points and can justify the fee.
The Platinum Card $895 annual fee. 5X points on prepaid flights and hotels booked through Amex Travel, subject to a points cap. Page listed access to 1,550+ airport lounges worldwide through the Global Lounge Collection (terms apply) and up to $600 annually in statement credits on qualifying prepaid hotel bookings through Amex Travel. Frequent travelers who can use the eligible travel benefits and lounge access enough to make the fee worthwhile.
Blue Cash Preferred No annual fee in year one, then $95. 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases and 6% on select U.S. streaming subscriptions; 3% on transit. Cash back is provided as Reward Dollars, redeemable as a statement credit. Category definitions and limits apply. People whose spending fits the listed cash-back categories and who expect the rewards to outweigh the fee after the first year.
Blue Cash Everyday No annual fee. 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retail, and U.S. gas stations, each on up to $6,000 in purchases; a lower rate applies after each cap. Listed on Amex’s no-annual-fee card page. Check the live product terms for reward details and exclusions. Fee-averse shoppers who spend in the listed categories and prefer cash back.

Rates, APRs, exclusions, and full eligibility terms are not summarized here because they depend on the live product disclosure and, for APR, applicant-specific factors. The current disclosures are available from the relevant Amex U.S. card pages. For further detail on the difference between Reward Dollars and Membership Rewards, see Amex’s comparison guide.

Which Amex card may fit your spending?

If you want to avoid an annual fee

Start with no-annual-fee cards such as Blue Cash Everyday, then check whether your purchases fit its U.S. supermarket, U.S. online retail, or U.S. gas station categories. Its 3% rates are limited to $6,000 in purchases per category before a lower rate applies, so spending beyond those caps should be evaluated at the ongoing rate rather than the headline rate. Amex lists no-annual-fee products on its no-annual-fee card page.

If dining and groceries are major expenses

Compare the Gold Card’s Membership Rewards earning on eligible restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases with its $325 annual fee and category caps. It is more compelling when those purchases qualify and the points suit your redemption preferences; the headline multipliers alone do not establish your actual value.

If you prefer cash back

Compare Blue Cash Preferred with Blue Cash Everyday using your annual eligible spending. Preferred has higher listed rates in certain categories but charges $95 annually after its first year; Everyday has no annual fee and lower listed rates in three categories, with its own caps. Because the reward is Reward Dollars for statement credit, include the fee and how you will redeem it in your calculation.

If you travel frequently

The Platinum Card is the premium travel-benefits example among these products. Compare its $895 annual fee with the specific benefits you can actually use, including eligible prepaid hotel credits and lounge access. Do not count a credit at face value if you would not make the qualifying booking anyway. The Gold Card may also be relevant if you value its points on prepaid travel booked through Amex Travel, but its earning categories and fee differ.

If you are loyal to an airline or hotel

Amex lists separate Delta SkyMiles cards and hotel card families. A co-branded card is worth comparing when you can use its brand-specific perks and rewards. Review the current fee, benefits, and reward currency for the particular card rather than assuming all cards in a family have the same terms.

How to compare an offer with the ongoing card value

The Gold Card page showed a welcome offer as high as 100,000 points for $8,000 in purchases during the first six months, but that example is variable, may not be available to every applicant, and is not a guaranteed offer. Before treating any offer as relevant, confirm the terms presented to you, including eligible purchases, the deadline, and your eligibility. Then decide whether the card still fits your spending after the offer period ends. The same principle applies to benefits: verify qualifying transactions and terms, and value only what you realistically expect to use.

Check fees, APR, and terms before applying

Product pages can change, and the exact APR and eligibility terms depend on the current disclosure and your application. American Express says APRs vary with market conditions and are determined partly by creditworthiness and other account-opening factors. Review the Rates & Fees link on the card’s live page, along with category exclusions, caps, benefit enrollment requirements, and reward redemption conditions. If paying the balance in full is uncertain, compare interest costs before placing much weight on rewards.
