AWS says its Middle East (UAE) Region (me-central-1) suffered physical damage after two facilities were directly struck, while a later conflict-related event disrupted the Middle East (Bahrain) Region (me-south-1). AWS advised customers to back up data and move workloads to other Regions. That advice is not an automatic relocation service: recovery depends on each customer’s replication, identity, networking, capacity and regulatory arrangements. AWS has not published a definitive full-restoration timetable in the available notices.
What happened
The incidents should be treated as a sequence, not as one generic claim that “an AWS data center was hit.”
UAE facilities were directly struck
Amazon told the Associated Press that two AWS facilities in the UAE were directly struck during drone activity. AWS said the resulting damage included structural damage, disrupted power delivery, fire-suppression activity and water damage. Because physical repairs were required, recovery was prolonged rather than a routine software failover. AP reporting described the initial impact as localized rather than a failure of AWS’s global network.
Nearby damage was reported in Bahrain
In the same initial account, a Bahrain facility was damaged after a drone landed nearby. That description is different from saying the facility was directly hit.

A later Bahrain Region disruption
AWS subsequently said the Bahrain Region had been disrupted by the continuing conflict and again told customers to move workloads elsewhere. Reporting identified drone activity, but did not establish that the Bahrain facility itself was directly struck. AWS did not confirm the precise physical mechanism when asked. The later event also did not initially appear on the public AWS status page, according to Data Center Dynamics.
CRN reported on March 24, 2026, that AWS was helping customers migrate and that many had already moved applications to other parts of the AWS network. That does not mean every customer workload was relocated automatically. CRN’s report also records AWS’s continuing migration guidance.
Timeline and verified scope

Which AWS Regions were involved?
AWS has three Middle East Regions: the UAE, Bahrain and Israel, according to AP’s description. The incidents described here concern two of them:
Rank #2
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Middle East (UAE),
me-central-1: the Region associated with the two directly struck facilities. - Middle East (Bahrain),
me-south-1: the Region later described by AWS as disrupted. - Middle East (Israel): a separate Region. It should not be called affected by these physical incidents unless AWS publishes a specific notice.
Why “a data center” is an incomplete description
An AWS Region is a geographic deployment made up of multiple physically separated Availability Zones. Each Availability Zone contains one or more data centers, with low-latency connections between zones. AP reported that AWS Regions have at least three Availability Zones.
Recommended Free Tools
The distinction matters because failures can occur at different levels:
- One facility: remaining facilities may absorb the loss.
- Several facilities in one Availability Zone: remaining capacity may be insufficient for normal workloads or failover.
- Regional networking or control-plane impairment: running compute may remain online while APIs, launches, monitoring, identity or managed services fail.
- Regional isolation: recovery requires customer design outside the Region, including data replication, DNS, keys and access controls.
A workload can therefore be “multi-AZ” and still be dependent on one Region’s power, connectivity, APIs, quotas, identity configuration or service capacity.
Rank #3
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Services affected: use dated AWS language
The affected service set changed over time. AWS Health notices described impairment or degradation across broad categories rather than one permanent list.
| Category | Examples reported in AWS status material | Possible customer effect |
|---|---|---|
| Compute and storage | EC2, EBS, S3 | Failed launches, inaccessible volumes, degraded object access or restore operations. |
| Databases and application services | DynamoDB, RDS, Lambda | Unavailable databases, failed function invocations or impaired application transactions. |
| Identity and operations | IAM, sign-in functions, CloudWatch | Difficulty authenticating, changing permissions or observing affected systems. |
| Networking | VPN, load balancing, NAT and related networking services | Broken routes, unreachable backends or inability to establish replacement paths. |
| Migration and recovery | Migration, backup and disaster-recovery services | Recovery workflows may themselves require alternative Regions or remote backups. |
The dated AWS operational notices include recommendations to launch replacement resources in unaffected Availability Zones, replicate data and restore from backups in another Region. See the AWS operational issue notice and the AWS replication and prolonged-disruption notice. Do not turn those changing notices into an undated claim that every listed service was continuously offline.
Are AWS migrating customer workloads automatically?
No. AWS’s public instruction to migrate is guidance and assistance, not a universal automatic relocation of customer applications.
Rank #4
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Whether a move is possible depends on:
- Cross-Region data replication or a usable remote backup.
- Infrastructure-as-code or another way to rebuild the environment.
- Destination-Region service parity, quotas and capacity.
- Availability of IAM, KMS keys, secrets, certificates, DNS, queues and networking outside the damaged Region.
- Latency, data-residency, sovereignty, licensing and regulatory constraints.
- Whether the customer can still access required regional APIs and management resources.
A “Region selector” cannot recreate a VPC, database, encryption policy, identity dependency and application integration by itself.
What an affected customer should do
This is general operational guidance, not individualized incident-response advice.
Immediate triage
- Check the public and account-specific AWS Health Dashboards.
- Inventory resources tied to
me-central-1andme-south-1, including hidden dependencies such as KMS keys, secrets, queues and private networking. - Classify each workload as serving normally, degraded, inaccessible or untested.
- Freeze nonessential changes in the affected Region.
- Verify the newest usable backup and replication point, including key access and restore permissions.
- Open a case through the AWS Management Console or AWS Support Center if the account or resources are affected.
Prioritize recovery
- Public applications and authentication dependencies.
- Databases, payment systems and regulated transactions.
- DNS, certificates and traffic-management layers.
- Queues, event pipelines and backup catalogs.
- Encryption keys, monitoring and incident communications.
Choose a recovery pattern
- Warm standby: fail traffic to a continuously prepared Region.
- Infrastructure rebuild: apply tested templates, then recreate networking, identity, security and compute.
- Database restore: use a cross-Region replica or remote backup, accepting its recovery-point limit.
- Object replication: copy S3 data to another Region with versioning, ownership and encryption correctly configured.
- Alternative provider or colocation: use a second cloud or physical environment when AWS capacity, residency or service availability is unsuitable.
Why multi-AZ architecture did not eliminate the risk
Multi-AZ design reduces exposure to many localized failures; it is not a promise against conflict affecting several facilities or a whole Region. A regional event can also expose shared dependencies: control-plane APIs, capacity, network paths, identity, KMS keys, secrets and operational personnel.

AP’s expert commentary captured the practical limit: AWS generally designs for the loss of one data center to be relatively unimportant, but losing multiple facilities can create serious capacity and continuity problems. Multi-Region recovery is therefore a separate customer obligation.
Latency, residency and cost trade-offs
AWS suggested considering Regions in the United States, Europe or Asia Pacific, depending on latency and data-residency requirements. The nearest available Region is not automatically the right one.
- Traffic may incur higher round-trip latency and inter-Region transfer charges.
- Data may cross a new privacy, sovereignty or government-contract jurisdiction.
- Required instance types, managed services or quotas may differ.
- Private connectivity, VPNs, firewalls and routing may need redesign.
- Standby compute, replicated storage, egress and support add recurring or incident-period costs.
- A destination in another volatile geography may not provide meaningful diversification.
What remains unknown
- The exact number of affected facilities.
- A complete, fixed service-by-service impact list at publication time.
- The precise cause and location of the later Bahrain disruption.
- Repair-completion dates for either regional situation.
- How many customers migrated and how many did so without AWS assistance.
- Whether any customer data was permanently lost.
Satellite imagery and later reporting may add physical detail, but it does not replace AWS’s account-specific service notices. Ars Technica’s follow-up should be read as additional reporting, not a restoration announcement.
What this means for cloud resilience
The episode is not evidence that AWS as a whole failed. It is evidence that cloud abstraction still rests on buildings, power, cooling, fire systems, spare parts, connectivity and people that can be exposed to conflict. It also shows why a business-continuity plan must test more than server replication: identity, encryption, DNS, observability, quotas, legal permissions and an executable runbook all matter.
Products such as AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery, AWS Backup and AWS Application Migration Service can support particular recovery patterns, but none substitutes for tested application failover. Total recovery cost includes storage, transfer, standby capacity, support and engineering time.
The Bottom Line
AWS’s Middle East incidents show the limits of treating multi-AZ deployment as complete disaster recovery. Customers in me-central-1 or me-south-1 should follow the latest AWS Health guidance, verify off-Region backups and keys, and test a recovery destination that satisfies both technical and legal requirements.
