Tanium’s Autonomous IT approach combines endpoint visibility, AI-assisted recommendations and governed actions in one enterprise platform. The goal is to help IT and security teams find out what is happening across a device fleet, decide what should change, and carry out approved remediation without stitching every step together across separate tools. For finance and operations leaders, the promise is simpler control of endpoint risk and work—not a published guarantee of lower costs or a particular return on investment.

What is Tanium Autonomous IT?

Autonomous IT is Tanium’s operating model for managing and securing enterprise endpoints. Tanium presents its platform as bringing together endpoint management, exposure management, security operations, incident response, compliance and digital employee experience around shared endpoint data. Rather than treating device inventory, vulnerability investigation and remediation as disconnected tasks, the model aims to connect them through a common platform.

“Autonomous” does not necessarily mean that software makes every decision and changes every device without human involvement. In Tanium’s description of Autonomous Endpoint Management (AEM), AI and machine learning can recommend changes and automate them. The organization still needs to determine which recommendations require review, who can approve them, and which actions may run automatically under policy.

How the platform connects visibility to action

Tanium describes a flow from endpoint data to decisions and then to operational changes. The components are useful to evaluate separately: having current information is not the same as having reliable recommendations, and neither automatically establishes that an organization has approved an action to run.

Endpoint data and live queries

The platform gathers endpoint telemetry and supports queries against managed devices. Tanium says its Endpoint Management product provides real-time visibility across physical, virtual, hybrid and remote endpoints. That visibility can support hardware and software inventory, configuration checks and investigation; its value depends on the devices actually managed, the quality of collected data and how the organization maintains its asset records.

AI assistance and recommendations

Tanium describes natural-language queries, predictive risk scoring, recommendations and agentic assistance as part of its AI layer. These capabilities are intended to help teams interpret endpoint information and decide what to address. A recommendation should be treated as decision support: teams still need to validate its relevance, scope and potential impact against their own environment and change policies.

Governed changes and remediation

From the platform, Tanium says teams can patch operating systems and applications, configure endpoints, deploy content, isolate devices and remediate vulnerabilities. Governance determines how much autonomy is appropriate. A lower-risk, repeatable task might be automated under an established policy, while a change with a wider operational impact may require an approval or maintenance window. The exact controls available to a customer depend on its products, configuration and deployment.

Fleet-wide distribution

Tanium’s platform description highlights a patented linear-chain architecture that uses peer-to-peer distribution for queries and content. The vendor says this approach is intended to avoid a central hub-and-spoke bottleneck as work reaches large endpoint fleets. Architecture is a design claim, not proof of performance in a particular company’s network; buyers should assess its behavior against their own endpoint count, network design, bandwidth constraints and operating requirements.

What efficiency and security work can it support?

A shared endpoint view can connect routine IT operations with security work. Tanium’s platform materials describe use cases across the following areas:

  • Asset discovery: identify hardware and installed software, then use current endpoint information to maintain asset or CMDB records.
  • Exposure management: find vulnerable or misconfigured endpoints and prioritize exposure using current device state.
  • Patching: deploy operating-system and application updates, with automation subject to the organization’s policy and change controls.
  • Incident response: investigate endpoints, collect evidence and take response actions such as isolating a device.
  • Compliance: check configurations against requirements and support reporting intended to reduce manual audit work.
  • Repeatable workflows: use Tanium Automate and APIs to connect recurring IT and security tasks.
  • Employee experience: include digital employee experience in the platform’s broader operating model.

These are capabilities and intended uses described by Tanium, not evidence that every deployment will produce the same operational result. Tanium’s public claims about real-time operation and scale, including references to millions of endpoints, should be understood as vendor claims rather than independent benchmarks. They do not establish a specific reduction in staffing, outage risk, incident response time or total cost.

How Tanium’s automation releases fit together

Tanium announced general availability of AEM for Tanium Cloud customers on February 10, 2024. The announcement described AEM as using real-time insights from Tanium cloud-managed endpoints to recommend and automate endpoint changes. Tanium announced general availability of Tanium Automate on September 10, 2024, positioning it for automating workflows. At Converge 2024 on November 19, Tanium described AEM in connection with asset discovery, vulnerability management, endpoint management, incident response and digital employee experience.

Date Announcement What it establishes
February 10, 2024 Tanium AEM general availability announcement Availability was announced for Tanium Cloud customers; the announcement described AI- and machine-learning-assisted endpoint recommendations and automation.
September 10, 2024 Tanium Automate general availability announcement Tanium announced general availability of its Automate product for repeatable workflow automation.
November 19, 2024 Tanium’s Converge 2024 AEM announcement Tanium described AEM across asset discovery, vulnerability management, endpoint management, incident response and digital employee experience.

These dates document the announcements, not current entitlement or packaging for every customer. Product bundles, availability and cloud or deployment requirements can change, so organizations should confirm current terms and capabilities with Tanium before planning a purchase or migration.

Can Tanium replace Intune or another endpoint tool?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Tanium’s platform spans endpoint management and security workflows, but a claim that it replaces a specific tool depends on what that tool does in the organization and which Tanium capabilities are licensed, deployed and integrated. Some companies may use Tanium alongside existing endpoint, identity, service-management or security products; others may consolidate selected functions after validating the coverage and operational impact.

Compare alternatives against the work that must continue—not just the number of consoles. A platform that covers inventory and patching, for example, may still need to fit established enrollment processes, identity controls, incident workflows, compliance evidence and service-desk operations.

Evaluation area Questions to resolve
Endpoint and operating-system coverage Does the platform support the organization’s device types, operating systems and remote or hybrid endpoints?
Data freshness and completeness How current is the endpoint view, which devices are absent or stale, and how will asset records be reconciled?
Workflow breadth Which management, vulnerability, incident-response and compliance tasks are available in the proposed configuration?
Automation guardrails Can the organization distinguish recommendations, approval-required actions and policy-authorized automatic execution?
Architecture and network impact How does query and content distribution behave on the organization’s network, including constrained sites?
Integrations and APIs Can the APIs support required connections to the CMDB, SIEM, identity provider and service-management system?
Deployment and operating cost What deployment model, licensing, implementation, integration and ongoing operational work are required?

The cost comparison should account for implementation and integration as well as subscription or licensing expense. Consolidation may reduce duplicated processes or tools in some environments, but the available Tanium materials do not establish a general savings percentage or guarantee that total operating cost will fall.

What should buyers validate before adopting it?

Because Autonomous IT links data collection to changes on endpoints, evaluation should cover controls and fit as carefully as feature breadth. A pilot should use representative devices and workflows, with success criteria agreed before automation is expanded.

  • Helpful in various ways
  1. Define the endpoint population. Identify which physical, virtual, remote and hybrid devices must be visible and managed, and set a measurable target for inventory completeness and freshness.
  2. Map current workflows. Document how patch requests, vulnerability findings, incident response, configuration checks and asset updates move through existing teams and systems.
  3. Set autonomy boundaries. Specify which actions may be recommended, which require human approval and which may execute automatically. Assign ownership for policy changes and exceptions.
  4. Test integrations. Validate the APIs and data flows needed by the CMDB, SIEM, identity and service-management systems, including how records and actions are reconciled when something fails.
  5. Measure operational outcomes. Track locally relevant measures such as inventory accuracy, patch compliance, time spent on repetitive tasks, change failures and incident-handling steps. Compare them with a documented baseline rather than assuming savings from vendor descriptions.
  6. Review deployment and governance costs. Include implementation effort, training, ongoing administration, network considerations and any retained tools when assessing total cost and risk.

Tanium’s developer portal documents APIs for inventory, investigation and response, compliance, vulnerability tracking and reusable automation playbooks. API availability alone does not guarantee a ready-made integration: buyers should verify specific endpoints, permissions, data mappings and support for the workflows their teams depend on.

What Tanium Automate does

Tanium Automate is the platform component Tanium announced as generally available on September 10, 2024. Its role in the Autonomous IT story is to automate repeatable workflows, connecting endpoint information and operational tasks. An organization assessing it should determine which workflows can be automated in its licensed configuration, what approvals and audit records are supported, and how automations interact with its existing change-management processes.

Automation is most useful when the underlying process is stable and its exceptions are understood. Encoding an inconsistent workflow can make mistakes faster and wider-reaching; establish ownership, validation and a recovery path before allowing an automation to make consequential endpoint changes.
