Automattic acquired Beeper on April 9, 2024. The companies confirmed the deal but did not disclose its price; TechCrunch reported it at $125 million. Beeper is now an Automattic-owned messaging app that combines multiple chat services, with free and paid plans and different privacy designs for on-device and cloud connections.
What Automattic acquired—and what the price was
Beeper was built as a unified inbox for messages from multiple services. Its April 2024 announcement described support for 14 chat networks, along with features such as unified search, folders, archiving, and scheduled messages. The supported roster has since changed; Beeper’s current FAQ describes support for more than 10 networks rather than promising a permanent count. Automattic and Beeper announced the acquisition on April 9, 2024. TechCrunch reported a $125 million deal value, but the companies’ announcements did not disclose the purchase price. The reported figure should not be treated as an officially confirmed price. The announcements also do not establish the transaction’s cash-versus-stock mix or other private terms.
Beeper had also launched Beeper Mini, an Android app that attempted to provide iMessage access. Its existence was part of Beeper’s history, but the acquisition announcement does not identify Beeper Mini as the principal asset Automattic bought.

Why Automattic wanted Beeper
Automattic, best known for WordPress.com and other web products, had acquired Texts.com in 2023. Buying Beeper gave it a second messaging product and a broader base for the unified-inbox idea. Automattic described its interest in terms of open communication, privacy, encryption, and making multiple messaging networks easier to use together. Those are the company’s stated aims, not proof that every integration has the same privacy properties.
The deal also fits a wider portfolio that reaches beyond publishing. Automattic lists products including Tumblr, Pocket Casts, Day One, Simplenote, Texts, and Beeper. Its product list identifies Beeper as an Automattic product.
Beeper’s promise is consolidation: one app can bring several conversations into a shared interface. The trade-off is that it is not the native client for most services. Available features, connection methods, and reliability depend in part on each underlying network.
How Beeper and Texts were combined
Automattic said the Beeper and Texts teams and products would come together in phases, with Beeper becoming the public-facing brand. Texts continued operating initially, so the acquisition did not mean that it shut down on announcement day. The companies described Texts’ local-processing and privacy-focused approach as part of what the combined product would carry forward.

Texts users were later moved into Beeper’s subscription structure. The entitlements depended on which Texts plan they had, so former users should check Beeper’s legacy subscription-transition details rather than assume every account received the same plan.
What changed after the acquisition
On-device connections and paid plans
On July 16, 2025, Beeper announced on-device connections and introduced Beeper Plus and Beeper Plus Plus. Beeper Cloud remained available for older connections while the company worked toward reducing reliance on it. The change made connection type a more important part of the product: supported services could connect directly from a user’s device, while other integrations continued to use Beeper’s servers as a bridge. Beeper explained the product change in its 2025 announcement.
Network and platform availability
As of Beeper’s June 23, 2026 update, Google Voice had been added as an on-device integration and LinkedIn had moved to on-device connections. These are dated product details, not guarantees that the roster will remain unchanged. Beeper describes its app as available across iPhone and iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS; check its official site for current availability.
Some services remain cloud-only according to Beeper’s support documentation: Google Messages, Google Chat, LINE, Discord, and Slack. Connection method matters for account limits as well as privacy. Paid status alone does not make a cloud-only integration an on-device connection.

How Beeper’s privacy models differ
On-device connections
For an on-device connection, Beeper says messages go directly from the device to the messaging network, without messages, contacts, or account credentials being stored on or transmitted through Beeper’s servers for that integration. This can preserve end-to-end encryption when the underlying service supports it. The practical trade-off is that the connection is device-specific; users may need to configure it separately on each device and may not get the same cross-device synchronization as a cloud connection. Cloud connections
With a cloud connection, Beeper’s servers bridge between the user and the chat network. Beeper says chat history is protected using zero-access encryption and that it does not hold the decryption keys for that history. This differs from a direct on-device connection, even though Beeper describes protections for cloud data. Cloud connections can make synchronization across devices more convenient.
It is therefore too broad to say simply that all Beeper chats are end-to-end encrypted or that Beeper collects no user data. The encryption properties depend on the connection and the underlying network. Beeper’s privacy policy also describes collection of operational information such as IP address, device identifiers, operating system, performance data, and crash information.
What Beeper costs as of August 18, 2026
The prices below are those listed on Beeper’s official pages as of August 18, 2026. Subscription prices and plan details can change; billing through an app store may be handled by Apple or Google. Beeper says subscriptions apply to the Beeper account, and paid features generally remain available through the end of the billing period after cancellation.

For many people, Free is enough to try the unified-inbox concept or manage up to five accounts. Plus is aimed at people who need more accounts or premium tools. Plus Plus is a costly power-user tier; its price is difficult to justify for ordinary personal messaging unless unlimited accounts or priority support are important.

New subscribers should not assume they qualify for older Beeper or Texts entitlements. Beeper’s transition documentation lists different arrangements by user group:
- Beeper Early Adopters: users who made the $120 early-access prepayment received Beeper Plus indefinitely, with a stated 12-connection limit.
- Beeper Legacy users: active users before the July 16, 2025 announcement retained free access with up to 12 total accounts and scheduled sends.
- Texts Personal users: moved to Beeper Plus.
- Texts for Student users: received Beeper Plus for the remainder of their existing subscription.
- Texts for Work users: moved to Beeper Plus Plus.
These categories and terms come from Beeper’s subscription transition page. Trials are offered on Android and desktop according to Beeper’s help documentation; the terms may depend on how a subscription is purchased.

Which account limits matter?
Plan limits and connection limits are separate. A higher plan can raise the number of accounts allowed by Beeper, but cannot override a network’s technical restrictions or make a cloud-only integration support multiple accounts. Beeper’s account-limits guide and plan FAQ explain the current rules.
- Free: five accounts total, one per network.
- Plus: ten accounts total and, for supported on-device services, up to three per network.
- Plus Plus: no Beeper account cap, although each network’s own restrictions and the connection type still apply.
- Cloud-only services: generally limited to one account per network; Beeper identifies Slack as an exception in some plan contexts.
Is Beeper a good fit?
It may suit people with several active networks
A shared inbox can be useful if conversations are spread across multiple services and the user values consolidated search, organization, reminders, or scheduling. Beeper’s free tier offers a way to try the approach before paying, while Plus may suit users who need a larger account allowance or premium features.
Native apps may be better for one-network users
If most conversations are on a single service, that service’s official app is usually the more direct choice for native features, platform compatibility, and support. Apple Messages, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and Google Messages are examples of single-network alternatives, not replacements for Beeper’s cross-network inbox.
Privacy-sensitive users should check each connection
People who prioritize privacy should identify whether each service they plan to connect is on-device or cloud-based, then weigh the synchronization trade-off. Beeper’s integrations do not make it affiliated with or endorsed by the networks it connects to; Beeper describes itself as a standalone application on its site.

Protocol control points to a different kind of product
Element, built around Matrix, is a more relevant option for readers interested in federation, open protocols, or control over infrastructure. It is not a drop-in replacement for Beeper’s broad consumer-service aggregation. Its official site is Element.
What the acquisition means now
Automattic’s purchase turned Beeper from an independent universal-inbox project into the focal brand for a larger messaging effort that also absorbed Texts. The product has evolved into a freemium service with paid capacity and productivity features, while its connection architecture gives users a choice—where supported—between direct on-device connections and cloud convenience. The reported $125 million price gives a sense of the deal’s scale, but the public announcements leave the actual transaction terms undisclosed.
