AutoDesSys is a real, privately held 3D-design software company based in Dublin, Ohio; it is not Autodesk. Its main product is form·Z, sold as Free, Core, and Pro editions, with optional rendering tools. AutoDesSys lists both subscriptions and perpetual licenses, but independent user-review evidence is limited. Treat the company’s BBB profile as a business record—not a verdict on software quality—and test form·Z against your own files and workflow before paying.

What is AutoDesSys?

AutoDesSys, Inc. develops 3D design software, with form·Z as its principal product family. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) lists the company at 4242 Tuller Road, Dublin, Ohio 43017, and says it was incorporated in 1990. The BBB profile lists an A+ rating but says the company is not BBB accredited. Those are business-profile details, not an independent assessment of form·Z’s performance or value. See the BBB company profile.

AutoDesSys is distinct from Autodesk, the separate company behind products such as AutoCAD, Revit, Maya, and Fusion. Similar names can cause search results and customer complaints to be mixed up; Autodesk reviews do not establish anything about AutoDesSys or form·Z. AutoDesSys’s website identifies its products, while Autodesk’s company page describes the separate business.

What does form·Z do?

form·Z is a 3D modeling and design environment intended for work such as architecture, interiors, product and exhibit design, visualization, and fabrication. Depending on edition, its modeling methods include mesh, ACIS solid, NURBS, and subdivision-surface tools. Pro also includes such capabilities as animation, documentation and layout features, and expanded import and export options. AutoDesSys describes the feature differences in its edition comparison and Pro product information.

The product range also includes V-Ray for form·Z for rendering, RenderZone, and form·Z Viewer. PowerCADD is a separate drawing and documentation product; AutoDesSys currently lists it as unavailable on Windows, with availability expected in 2027. Check the vendor’s current product pages for release and platform status.

Which AutoDesSys product fits your needs?

Product Best suited to Price and license signal Key qualification
form·Z Free Learning the workflow, basic modeling, or budget-conscious projects Free AutoDesSys says it permits personal, academic, and commercial use; it has fewer modeling features and exchange formats than paid editions.
form·Z Core Users needing more than mesh modeling, including ACIS solids, NURBS, subdivision, architectural tools, and Python scripting $219/year subscription or $495 perpetual Some advanced capabilities and broader professional tools are reserved for Pro.
form·Z Pro Professional design, visualization, animation, documentation, and fabrication-oriented workflows $439/year subscription or $995 perpetual Broad feature set may be more than a simple modeling workflow needs.
V-Ray for form·Z Users who need its photorealistic rendering features $395/year or $960 perpetual as a standalone add-on Requires a compatible form·Z edition and version; bundles are priced differently.
RenderZone Users seeking the companion rendering product $170/year or $395 perpetual as a standalone add-on Check the selected bundle and edition before comparing costs.
form·Z Learning Edition Eligible students and educators Free LE + RenderZone option; LE + V-Ray listed at $150/year Eligibility is required and commercial use is prohibited.

Paid prices in the table are those listed on AutoDesSys’s purchase page as observed August 16, 2026. They may change and may vary with geography, taxes, promotions, or product revisions. The page lists additional bundles and upgrade prices; compare the exact configuration you need at AutoDesSys’s purchase page.

There are three different ways to get access without buying a standard paid license: form·Z Free is a limited edition that the vendor says can be used commercially; the Learning Edition is for eligible students and educators and cannot be used commercially; and the 30-day trial provides temporary access to paid software, advertised without a credit card requirement. Verify current trial terms and supported products on the signup page.

What do reviews say about AutoDesSys and form·Z?

Public independent review evidence is limited compared with that available for much larger design-software vendors. The available BBB profile can help identify the business and its listed status, but it does not provide a representative body of form·Z user feedback. An A+ BBB rating is not a software-quality score, and limited review volume does not prove either satisfaction or dissatisfaction.

Be careful not to attribute Autodesk’s BBB reviews or complaints to AutoDesSys. The records concern a different company: Autodesk’s BBB customer reviews and Autodesk’s BBB complaints.

With little representative user-review data, a prospective buyer can more reliably assess the published feature set, exact license terms, system compatibility, and whether representative project files move cleanly through the workflow. AutoDesSys provides contact and support information and a searchable help center; the existence of support channels is useful to know, but does not establish response quality.

How much does form·Z cost, and what does each license include?

The purchase page lists annual subscriptions and perpetual licenses. A perpetual license is for the purchased version; it should not be read as including every future major version or unlimited support. The figures below were observed on August 16, 2026 and are subject to change.

Product or bundle Annual subscription Perpetual license
form·Z Core $219/year $495
form·Z Pro $439/year $995
Core + V-Ray $614/year $1,455
Pro + V-Ray $834/year $1,955
Core + RenderZone $389/year $890
Pro + RenderZone $609/year $1,390
V-Ray for form·Z $395/year $960
RenderZone $170/year $395
V-Ray Render Node $245/year not stated on the purchase page

According to AutoDesSys, subscriptions include updates and major upgrades while active, plus email technical support. A perpetual purchase includes updates for version 10 and four months of technical support by email and phone; later major-version upgrades are optional and may be offered at reduced cost. Perpetual-license holders can purchase a Family Plan for ongoing updates and support. See the purchase page for current details and upgrade prices.

AutoDesSys’s terms and conditions say subscriptions may automatically renew; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and partial-period refunds are not provided. The terms also matter if your organization has strict account or connectivity rules: form·Z 10 introduced cloud-based license management and single sign-on. Review current terms and confirm license activation and transfer requirements before purchase.

What hardware and compatibility should you check?

For form·Z 10 Pro, Core, and Free, AutoDesSys lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit) and macOS 11 or later as recommended; it also lists macOS 10.15 and 11 as supported with some restrictions. The vendor lists 16 GB RAM, recommending 32 GB or more for complex models and large texture maps. On Mac, Apple Silicon is recommended. On Windows, graphics hardware supporting OpenGL 3.2 or later is specified. AutoDesSys also gives approximate benchmark-score recommendations of 3,000, or 5,000 or better for larger files. These are vendor specifications and recommendations, not independent performance guarantees.

V-Ray 7 for form·Z requires form·Z Pro or Core version 10.1.5 or later. AutoDesSys recommends RTX-capable graphics on Windows and Apple Silicon and GPU hardware on macOS. Review the current system requirements and trial page before installing.

Do not assume every edition supports every file format or renderer. AutoDesSys’s comparison chart shows differences among Free, Core, and Pro. Check the precise formats and features required by your collaborators, suppliers, renderer, or fabrication process.

Strengths and trade-offs

Reasons to evaluate form·Z

  • Several modeling approaches—mesh, solid, NURBS, and subdivision—are represented across its paid editions.
  • A free edition is available, and AutoDesSys says form·Z Free permits commercial use.
  • Core and Pro provide an upgrade path, while Pro targets a wider range of professional design and documentation workflows.
  • Both subscription and perpetual purchase options are listed, which lets buyers weigh recurring payments against a version-specific license.
  • V-Ray and RenderZone are available for users who need the corresponding rendering features.

Costs and risks to weigh

  • Independent review volume and the apparent third-party ecosystem are smaller than those of dominant design platforms, making external feedback and community resources harder to evaluate.
  • The breadth of Pro’s features may bring a learning curve; the vendor’s positioning is not a substitute for trying the interface on a real project.
  • Renderer add-ons can materially increase the total license cost.
  • A perpetual license does not itself provide the same ongoing major-version updates and support as an active subscription.
  • Cloud-managed licensing may be a concern for teams with connectivity, account-management, or transfer requirements.

Who is form·Z a good fit for?

  • Architects and interior designers: consider Core or Pro if you need modeling alongside architectural tools, presentation, or documentation features; check whether your practice also requires a separate BIM collaboration system.
  • Product and exhibit designers: compare the edition’s solid, NURBS, and subdivision tools against the geometry and exchange formats your projects require.
  • Visualization artists: assess whether the base workflow is sufficient or whether V-Ray or RenderZone is necessary, then include that add-on in the license comparison.
  • Fabrication and 3D-printing users: verify the exact export formats, dimensions, and geometry behavior using a representative model and downstream software.
  • Students and educators: the Learning Edition can provide Pro functionality to eligible users, but its noncommercial restriction matters for paid work.
  • Small businesses and beginners: Free offers a low-cost way to evaluate the modeling approach, while Core can add capabilities without moving immediately to Pro.
  • Enterprise teams: confirm licensing, account, collaboration, support, and required file-format arrangements before standardizing across users.

How does form·Z compare with alternatives?

These are candidates to test by workflow, not winners from a head-to-head performance review. Compare the functions you actually use, required file exchange, team familiarity, and licensing.

Alternative Why to compare it What to verify
SketchUp Often considered for accessible architectural and conceptual modeling. Current plan features, file and export limits, and whether its tools cover your precision and documentation needs.
Rhino A candidate for advanced NURBS and computational-design workflows. How its modeling, architecture-related tools, rendering, and licensing match your projects.
Blender Free, open-source software with broad 3D content creation, animation, and rendering capabilities. Whether its workflow suits CAD-like precision, documentation, and fabrication handoffs.
Shapr3D A candidate for direct, tablet-oriented modeling and product-design work. Platform support, file exchange, and whether the available professional features cover your workflow.
Traditional CAD or BIM tools Worth comparing when engineering documentation, formal BIM, or enterprise collaboration is central. Required deliverables, model coordination, and integrations; no single alternative is specified here.

How to evaluate it before committing

  1. Start with the workflow, not the feature list. Identify the models, file formats, documentation, rendering, and fabrication handoffs your work requires.
  2. Check edition compatibility. Use the edition comparison to confirm that Free, Core, or Pro includes the necessary tools and exchange formats.
  3. Test on your own hardware. Download the trial and open representative files; test the exports and any renderer or license activation your team expects to use.
  4. Compare full license costs. Include any renderer, renewal, upgrade, support, tax, or other applicable charges, and read the current purchase terms before choosing subscription or perpetual licensing.
