They launched in limited beta for Audible customers in the United States and United Kingdom on October 1, 2026; availability is currently tied to a small selection of titles.
What are Audible’s new features?
Character Guide, Interactive Story and Visual Explorer are optional experiences built around audiobook listening. Audible says it developed them with creators. They do different jobs: one helps identify characters, one lets listeners converse with a character in a separate story experience, and one presents related visuals and context while the audiobook plays.
| Feature | Interaction | Relationship to the audiobook | Initial title examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character Guide | Reference cards with character information and performer details | Supports listening without changing the narration | Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Audible’s production of 1984 |
| Interactive Story | Free-form conversation with a character, powered by generative AI | A bonus role-play experience beyond the audiobook narrative | Renfield in Dracula |
| Visual Explorer | Browse relevant imagery and contextual information | Adds visual context at selected moments while playback continues | The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities |
What does Character Guide do?
Character Guide identifies who is speaking in real time on the player page and provides spoiler-free character cards. The cards include performer headshots and biographies, so listeners can check who a character is and who voices them without being told later plot developments. Audible says it is available with its Dracula and 1984 productions. The forthcoming title Exoplanet is planned to receive the feature.
Audible says listeners will later be able to ask questions about a production as its story unfolds. That capability is described as a future addition, not an established feature of the current beta.

Can you talk to characters in an Audible book?
Yes, through Interactive Story on selected productions. In the initial Dracula example, Renfield addresses the listener, sets out a role, goal and stakes, and responds to the listener’s own words in real time. It is a separate, generative-AI role-play layer—not a change to the audiobook’s original narration and not a conversation with every character in every title.
Audible says the experience combines generative AI, conversational design and sound production. Creators define the opening scenes, turning points and character persona, which Audible describes as a way to keep the interaction faithful to the creator’s vision. That design shapes the experience, but it does not make every listener’s exchange a fixed script.

What is Visual Explorer?
Visual Explorer is designed to show relevant imagery and contextual information at selected points in a title while the narrative continues. Audible’s cited example is The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities, where listeners can explore landmarks, historical figures and places. It is a visual companion to listening rather than a replacement for the audiobook.
Which titles and countries are eligible?
As of Audible’s October 1, 2026 announcement, all three features are in limited beta for Audible customers in the United States and United Kingdom. The examples Audible named are not evidence that the features work with the rest of the catalog. TechCrunch described the initial catalog as small and reported that Audible plans to expand the beta over time. Audible says expansion will depend on the stories selected and feedback from customers and creators.

Audible has not stated in the cited launch announcement whether a paid membership is required, which devices support the features, or whether every eligible customer will see them. The beta description therefore does not establish universal access for all U.S. and UK customers. Check the title and feature availability in your Audible app or account rather than assuming a particular audiobook or device is supported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do the features fit with Audible’s other discovery tools?
These story experiences complement tools intended to help listeners find and follow books. Audible’s broader discovery features include Maven, its conversational search tool; Goodreads Want to Read integration; Page Sync; and in-app video reels. Audible reported that Maven searches were 17 percent more successful than traditional keyword search in 2026, and that users were 40 percent more likely to find a title of interest with video reels in 2026. Those are Audible-reported figures, not independent comparisons.
