The serious issue in a reported 2025 complaint is different: a customer said they declined the feature, found it on the account anyway, struggled to cancel it, and was billed before receiving a credit. That allegation is not independent proof of a companywide practice, but it shows why customers should verify consent, the exact feature name, and the effect on phone promotions.
What the customer said happened
PhoneArena reported a Reddit user’s account of an AT&T store upgrade in February 2025. The customer said they declined Next Up, yet the feature later appeared on the account. When the customer contacted AT&T, representatives allegedly said cancellation could not happen until the phone arrived. After delivery, the customer said they were told to wait about two weeks. The feature was eventually canceled, but a charge still appeared; after another contact, AT&T reportedly issued a $10 credit. These are the customer’s allegations as reported by PhoneArena, not independently verified findings.
The account is also difficult to match precisely to AT&T’s current product names. The report calls the feature “Next Up,” while the $10 charge corresponds to current Next Up Anytime materials. The original account agreement or bill would be needed to determine which feature was added.

Next Up versus Next Up Anytime
| Feature | Price and status | Core rule |
|---|---|---|
| Next Up | $6 per month; no longer offered to new customers under AT&T’s current support information | Legacy customers generally needed at least 50% of the phone’s total sales price paid before an early upgrade |
| Next Up Anytime | $10 per month on eligible devices; current product | Can permit an upgrade after the first installment and Next Up Anytime payments, subject to return, account, service and timing requirements |
AT&T’s current installment plans generally use 36 monthly payments. The add-on fee is separate from the phone balance: it does not pay down the device or count toward the percentage-of-cost threshold. Promotional upgrade offers generally require at least one-third of the device cost to have been paid, with promotion-specific conditions.

What the $10 fee actually buys
Next Up Anytime buys early-upgrade eligibility. It does not make the replacement phone free, erase the old installment balance by itself, or guarantee the best trade-in promotion. An early upgrade normally means returning the enrolled phone under AT&T’s rules and starting a new installment arrangement for the replacement device.
Conditions for a current early upgrade
- The phone must be an eligible smartphone bought on an AT&T Installment Plan.
- The account and qualifying service must remain in good standing.
- Required installment and Next Up Anytime payments must be made.
- The enrolled phone must be returned within 30 days after the replacement arrives.
- The returned device must power on and off and meet AT&T’s physical and functional standards.
- Next Up Anytime permits no more than three upgrades in a rolling 12-month period.
AT&T’s eligibility and return guidance explains those requirements. A failed inspection, late shipment or missing device can leave the customer responsible for the remaining balance or defeat the intended upgrade treatment.
Why “upgrade early” can still cost money
Four separate pieces can appear on a customer’s account:
- the original phone’s installment balance;
- the Next Up or Next Up Anytime fee;
- monthly credits from a trade-in promotion; and
- the replacement phone’s new installment plan.
Taxes, upgrade or activation charges, accessories, insurance and service-plan costs may be separate again. For example, a customer who has made only one payment might qualify to use Next Up Anytime, but not yet qualify for a promotion requiring one-third of the device cost paid. The replacement could therefore be financed at or near its full price even though the early-upgrade feature is available.
Bill credits add another risk. Paying off a device, changing service, canceling a feature or upgrading can affect credits under the specific promotion. AT&T’s device-installment terms warn that changes to the installment arrangement can alter upgrade rights and credits. Check the terms for the particular promotion before making an account change.

Is Next Up a scam?
The written product is an optional, paid service with disclosed eligibility and return rules. The reported allegation is a consent and billing question: if a customer really declined the feature and it was nevertheless added, that would be a sales-practice problem, not proof that the product itself is fraudulent.
PhoneArena also reproduced comments from anonymous Reddit users describing alleged aggressive sales targets or unwanted add-ons. Those comments are anecdotal and unauthenticated. They do not establish that AT&T instructs employees to enroll customers without permission. The store’s identity—AT&T corporate or an authorized dealer—and the customer’s account records would matter in evaluating the incident.

How to check your account
- Open the wireless bill and look for a separate line labeled “Next Up,” “Next Up Anytime” or similar wording.
- Review the installment-plan and device details for the affected line and phone IMEI.
- Compare the bill with the order confirmation, retail receipt and signed agreement.
- Check whether a trade-in promotion is producing monthly credits and note its terms before changing anything.
How to cancel an unwanted feature and seek a refund
- Save screenshots, bills, receipts, order confirmations, chat transcripts and the dates and names associated with calls or store visits.
- Request cancellation through your AT&T account, an AT&T store or designated location, or customer service, including 611 from an AT&T device. Those routes are listed in AT&T’s terms.
- State the requested effective date and ask for reversal of charges from the date you declined the feature or first requested cancellation.
- Obtain a confirmation number or written confirmation showing the effective date.
- Review the next two bills. If the charge remains, dispute the specific line item and attach the prior confirmation.
- If ordinary support does not resolve the matter, use AT&T’s formal complaint or executive-care channels, then consider an FCC or state consumer-protection complaint. These are escalation options, not guaranteed refunds.
Do not pay off the phone or abandon a promotion merely to remove an add-on without first asking how that action affects existing credits.
When Next Up Anytime may—or may not—make sense
| Choice | Potential advantage | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Installment plan without the add-on | Lower recurring cost and straightforward payoff | Less flexibility for an early replacement |
| Installment plan with Next Up Anytime | Early-upgrade option for customers who meet return and service rules | $10 monthly cost even when unused; promotion and return conditions require careful tracking |
| Unlocked phone bought from a manufacturer | Carrier flexibility and direct ownership structure | May require more money upfront or manufacturer financing and may forgo carrier-specific promotions |
The add-on is more likely to fit someone who upgrades frequently, protects devices and can return them on time. It is usually a poor fit for someone who keeps phones for two or three years, wants the lowest monthly bill, or expects the fee to build ownership equity. Buying directly from Apple, Samsung or the Google Store can avoid a carrier early-upgrade add-on, although current prices and financing offers vary.
Bottom line for AT&T customers
Next Up Anytime is a real early-upgrade product, while the older $6 Next Up is a legacy offering. The reported customer experience illustrates how an optional feature can feel deceptive when consent, cancellation timing or billing do not match expectations. Verify the exact feature on your account, document every request, seek a dated retroactive adjustment, and protect separate trade-in credits before changing the installment plan.
