AT&T announced on August 26, 2024 that customers could receive a Google Pixel 9 Pro at no device cost after trading in any Google Pixel smartphone in any condition. The phone was not free upfront or unlocked: AT&T used installment billing and promotional monthly credits. “Any condition” referred to eligible Google Pixel phones, not any brand of phone or any object.
The announcement is historical. AT&T’s currently available public pages do not establish that the exact Pixel 9 Pro offer remains active in August 2026, so verify the live promotion and checkout terms before sending in a device.
What AT&T actually advertised
AT&T’s August 26, 2024 announcement said both new and existing AT&T customers could get the Pixel 9 Pro free with a qualifying Google Pixel trade-in. The announcement also presented the Pixel 9 Pro at $10.99 per month for customers without the special Pixel trade-in qualification. Those figures describe that dated offer, not guaranteed current pricing.

The related promotion summary identified both Pixel 9 Pro models and described qualification through either a minimum trade-in value or any Google Pixel smartphone in any condition: AT&T promotion-summary PDF.
What “any condition” means
For that promotion, “any condition” meant an identifiable Google Pixel smartphone, regardless of age or ordinary physical condition. A cracked, badly worn or nonworking Pixel could therefore fit the wording. It did not mean that AT&T accepted every phone brand, a phone with no identifiable IMEI, or a device that failed ownership and security checks.

Devices that were not automatically covered
- iPhones, Samsung phones, Motorola phones and other non-Pixel devices.
- Previously recycled or donated devices.
- Manufacturer demonstration units.
- AT&T company-owned devices.
- AT&T prepaid devices.
The promotion material also required the trade-in to be accepted through AT&T’s device-identification and submission process. A phone that is lost or stolen, activation-locked, reported with a mismatched IMEI or submitted after the deadline can still create a problem even when the advertisement says “any condition.”
Before shipping a damaged Pixel
- Find and record the IMEI and confirm that AT&T’s trade-in system recognizes the exact model.
- Remove the Google account, screen lock and any factory-reset protection.
- Confirm the phone is yours and is not reported lost or stolen.
- Use the model and IMEI shown in the order, not a replacement device with different identifiers.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking record.
Is the free Pixel 9 Pro deal still available?
As of the available August 16, 2026 information, AT&T’s public free-phone page emphasizes newer promotions, and its trade-in guidance highlights a Pixel 10 Pro XL offer. Those pages do not confirm that the 2024 Pixel 9 Pro promotion is still running. A cached article, search result or retailer page is not proof of current availability.

- Search the live catalog for both “Pixel 9 Pro” and “Pixel 9 Pro XL.”
- Select the exact storage and model offered.
- Enter the trade-in make, model and IMEI.
- Open the promotion details and check the qualifying plan, installment length, credit amount, trade-in deadline and expiration date.
- Save screenshots and the order confirmation before mailing the trade-in.
If checkout does not explicitly show the Pixel 9 Pro promotion and its credit, do not assume the old offer has attached.

Why “free” does not mean no cost
Carrier “free phone” offers normally work by placing the phone on an installment agreement and applying monthly promotional credits against those payments. Contemporary coverage of the 2024 offer commonly described a 36-month credit period, but the applicable term must come from the specific offer you accept. The historical promotion details are summarized in AT&T’s PDF, while secondary reporting described the credit structure at Slickdeals.
You may still pay sales tax, activation or upgrade charges, plan charges and accessories. If you cancel service, pay off the phone early, change to an ineligible plan or otherwise break the promotion’s conditions, future credits can stop and the remaining device balance may become due.

Use this calculation when comparing the offer:
Total cost = required service over the credit period + taxes and fees + activation or upgrade charges + device payments not covered by credits − what the trade-in could earn elsewhere.

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are separate models. AT&T’s announcement and promotion material mentioned them separately, and storage tiers, installment prices and maximum credits can differ. Confirm the model name on the checkout screen; a promotion shown for the XL is not automatically a promotion for the smaller Pro.
Who should consider the offer?
It can make sense when
- You already have an old or severely damaged Pixel with little resale value.
- You already use the required unlimited plan.
- You expect to remain with AT&T for the entire credit period.
- The offer works on an upgrade rather than requiring an unwanted new line.
- You accept carrier financing and do not need an unlocked phone immediately.
It can be a poor deal when
- The qualifying plan costs more than your current service.
- You may switch carriers before all credits are paid.
- Your Pixel could sell privately for substantially more.
- You want to buy the phone outright or keep it unlocked.
- The current promotion has replaced the Pixel 9 Pro with a newer model or is available only for the XL.
How to protect the promotional credits
- Capture the advertised price, trade-in rule, plan requirement, installment term, credit amount and expiration date.
- Save the order confirmation and promotion or offer identifier.
- Photograph the device and record its IMEI before packing it.
- Ship by the stated deadline using tracking and retain proof of delivery.
- Review the first several bills for the expected credit. Credits may not appear on the first bill, so check the current terms for the stated grace period.
- Contact AT&T promptly if the credit is missing, providing the confirmation, screenshots and delivery proof.
Customer discussions on device-condition disputes and missing or delayed credits are anecdotal, not official policy, but they illustrate why documentation matters.
Alternatives to a carrier trade-in
- Sell a working or lightly damaged Pixel privately and compare the net proceeds with the AT&T credits.
- Check Google’s current trade-in program and another carrier’s live promotion.
- Buy an unlocked Pixel outright if flexibility is worth more than carrier credits.
- Wait for a newer-device promotion if the Pixel 9 Pro offer is no longer shown at checkout.
Do not rely on a quoted resale value or an old promotion amount without checking current terms.
Bottom line
AT&T’s “any condition” Pixel 9 Pro deal was legitimate when announced on August 26, 2024. It covered an eligible Google Pixel smartphone—not any phone—and made the device free only after promotional bill credits. In August 2026, treat the offer as historical unless AT&T’s live catalog and checkout screen confirm the exact Pixel 9 Pro promotion, qualifying plan and credit schedule.
