AT&T Reported 324,000 Postpaid Phone Net Adds as Verizon Lost 289,000 Wireless Subscribers in Q1 2025

AT&T’s Q1 2025 wireless gain and Verizon’s reported loss show diverging momentum, but not proven customer migration. Category definitions, promotions, bundling, T-Mobile and cable competition all matter.

AT&T reported 324,000 postpaid phone net additions in the first quarter of 2025, while contemporary coverage reported Verizon’s wireless business losing 289,000 net subscribers. The figures show sharply different momentum, but they do not prove that 289,000 Verizon customers switched to AT&T. They are net changes, measured by different companies and requiring careful category matching.

AT&T released its results on April 23, 2025. These are historical Q1 2025 figures, not a current 2026 subscriber snapshot.

The Q1 2025 figures at a glance

Measure AT&T Verizon and other context
Reported wireless phone movement 324,000 postpaid phone net adds 289,000 net wireless subscriber losses in contemporary comparative coverage; the exact Verizon subscriber category should be confirmed against Verizon’s original Q1 filing before calling it a like-for-like postpaid comparison
Postpaid phone churn 0.83%, versus 0.72% a year earlier Not stated in the cited comparative coverage
Postpaid phone ARPU $56.56, up 1.8% year over year Not stated
Wireless service revenue $16.7 billion, up 4.1% Verizon wireless service revenue was reported up 2.7% in comparative coverage
Broadband additions 261,000 AT&T Fiber net adds Verizon reportedly added 339,000 broadband customers, including 308,000 fixed-wireless customers
National-carrier comparison Exceeded the roughly 258,300 analyst estimate cited by PhoneArena T-Mobile reportedly added 495,000 postpaid phone customers

AT&T’s official release and operating schedules use the term postpaid phone net adds, not “324,000 new subscribers.” Net adds are the result after additions and cancellations.

What AT&T actually added

The 324,000 figure covers AT&T’s postpaid phone base only. It excludes the broader set of wireless connections and should not be confused with gross customer sign-ups.

AT&T’s wider mobility movement

  • 290,000 total postpaid net additions.
  • 34,000 prepaid net losses.
  • 136,000 reseller net losses.
  • 120,000 total mobility net additions after those category movements.
  • Postpaid phone churn of 0.83%.
  • Total mobility revenue of $21.6 billion, up 4.7%.

AT&T also reported $30.6 billion of total revenue, adjusted EBITDA of $11.5 billion and free cash flow of $3.1 billion for the quarter. Those financial results matter because subscriber growth can be purchased with discounts, trade-in credits and device costs.

Why AT&T’s result improved

More gross additions and device promotions

AT&T management said postpaid phone gross additions rose about 13% year over year. PhoneArena reported that AT&T expanded iPhone promotions and accepted trade-ins regardless of device condition. Management also said device upgrades were stronger than expected in early April, raising the possibility that some normal second-half upgrade activity was pulled forward.

Higher gross additions more than offset churn normalization. AT&T said some churn reflected customers reaching the end of equipment-promotion financing periods. That makes the 324,000 net result positive, but it also shows why the durability and cost of the additions matter.

Fiber-and-wireless bundling

AT&T added 261,000 fiber customers and said more than four in ten AT&T Fiber households also selected AT&T wireless. Bundling can reduce the incentive to leave, encourage a household to add a second service, or attract a new household taking both services.

It does not establish that those households previously used Verizon. The effect is also geographically limited to locations where AT&T Fiber or other qualifying connectivity is available.

What Verizon’s 289,000 loss does—and does not—show

Contemporary comparative reporting described Verizon as losing 289,000 net wireless subscribers, while another industry account used the same number in a prepaid context. Because those descriptions conflict, the category should be checked against Verizon’s original Q1 2025 earnings release or filing before presenting the number as an exact postpaid-phone comparison with AT&T.

Even if both figures are confirmed as postpaid phone measures, they would still represent net movements, not identified customer transfers. A Verizon loss can include customers moving to T-Mobile, cable operators, prepaid brands, another service, or no replacement service. AT&T’s gain can include new households, upgrades, bundled customers and customers leaving other providers.

Pricing may have affected Verizon’s retail results

Comparative analysis attributed part of Verizon’s wireless weakness to recent price increases. Verizon’s wireless service revenue nevertheless rose 2.7% in that account, illustrating the trade-off between customer volume and revenue per account. Pricing is a reported explanation, not proof of a single cause.

Verizon grew broadband

Verizon reportedly added 339,000 broadband customers, including 308,000 fixed-wireless customers. Its wireless-phone result therefore should not be treated as a verdict on the entire connectivity business. Verizon may have been gaining home-internet relationships even while its retail wireless count weakened.

Why this was not simply a two-carrier contest

T-Mobile led the national-carrier additions

T-Mobile reportedly added 495,000 postpaid phone customers, more than AT&T’s 324,000. It also added 424,000 high-speed-internet customers and reported 1.3 million total customer additions, according to comparative coverage. That makes “AT&T won the quarter” too broad unless the metric is specified.

Comcast and Charter added cable-led competition

Mobile World Live reported 514,000 Spectrum Mobile additions for Charter and 323,000 Xfinity Mobile additions for Comcast. Both products combine mobile with home broadband, and both use mobile-network arrangements involving Verizon.

  • 50MP** camera system with OIS. Capture sharper low-light photos and smoother videos with an unshakable camera system featuring Optical Image Stabilization.
  • Stylish yet durable design. Enjoy the premium look and feel of vegan leather with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and underwater protection.

That structure complicates market-share interpretation: Verizon can lose a retail wireless relationship while still receiving wholesale revenue or network traffic through cable partners. A retail subscriber loss does not automatically equal an equivalent loss of network economics.

Are the AT&T and Verizon numbers comparable?

Before drawing a direct conclusion, match all of the following:

  • Postpaid versus prepaid service.
  • Phone subscribers versus connected devices.
  • Net additions versus gross additions.
  • Retail customers versus reseller or wholesale connections.
  • Wireless phone accounts versus broadband customers.
  • Quarterly movement versus the quarter-end customer count.

AT&T’s category is clearly identified in its official materials. Verizon’s 289,000 figure should retain the “reported” qualification until Verizon’s primary document confirms the category.

  1. Churn, which indicates how many customers are leaving.
  2. ARPU, which shows revenue per user.
  3. Service revenue and equipment revenue.
  4. Promotion, subsidy and equipment expenses.
  5. EBITDA and margin.
  6. Customer-acquisition costs and the quality of additions.
  7. Broadband growth and household bundling.
  8. Wholesale relationships with cable operators.
  9. Free cash flow and debt.

AT&T’s Q1 figures illustrate the point: phone net adds were strong, but churn was higher than a year earlier. A promotion-heavy addition is not automatically as profitable or as durable as an unsubsidized, multi-product household.

What customers should take from the quarter

Quarterly net adds do not prove which carrier has the best network or value for an individual. Before switching, compare:

  • Coverage at home, work and common travel destinations.
  • The regular price after every promotion expires.
  • Taxes, fees, autopay and multi-line requirements.
  • Trade-in condition rules, device payoff obligations and financing length.
  • International roaming and hotspot allowances.
  • Data-prioritization and network-management policies.
  • Streaming or other included benefits.
  • Whether AT&T Fiber, Verizon fixed wireless, Xfinity or Spectrum broadband is available at your address.
  • Customer-service quality and the cost of leaving a current bundle.

Official plan and offer pages are the appropriate place to verify terms immediately before a switch: AT&T wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile, Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile.

Bottom line

AT&T had a strong Q1 2025 postpaid-phone result: 324,000 net adds, above the cited analyst estimate, alongside higher mobility revenue and fiber growth. Verizon’s reported 289,000 net loss points to weaker wireless momentum, but the available descriptions do not safely establish the exact subscriber category or any customer-for-customer transfer to AT&T. T-Mobile, Comcast and Charter were also reshaping the market, so the quarter is best read as evidence of changing competitive momentum—not proof that the market simply moved from Verizon to AT&T.
