As Bitcoin Infrastructure Booms, Mining Heads to the Data Center

Bitcoin miners are building power and cooling infrastructure that may also serve AI and HPC. But adapting a mine depends on grid access, cooling, tenant requirements and economics.

Bitcoin miners are increasingly building or repurposing data-center infrastructure because the business depends on much more than mining machines: it needs large, reliable power connections, substations, cooling, land and network access. Those assets can also support high-performance computing (HPC), including some AI workloads—but a mining site is not automatically an AI data center, and the available evidence does not establish that AI is always more profitable than Bitcoin mining.

Why Bitcoin mining is becoming an infrastructure business

Bitcoin mining uses specialized computers, called ASICs, to compete to add blocks to the Bitcoin blockchain. A mining operator earns bitcoin when it successfully mines a block, but it must pay for electricity and the facilities and equipment needed to run those machines. The economics therefore depend heavily on securing power and operating a large, energy-intensive site.

That makes mining operators relevant to the broader data-center buildout. They may already have land, buildings, substations, grid interconnections, fiber connections and cooling systems—the same kinds of assets that data-center developers need. Mining operators can also adjust or curtail their electricity use, which can help them respond to grid conditions. These capabilities make mining infrastructure a potential starting point for other computing uses, rather than proof that every mine can readily change over.

How much electricity does Bitcoin mining use?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated in 2024 that cryptocurrency mining represented 0.6%–2.3% of U.S. electricity use. For global Bitcoin mining in 2023, the EIA cited an estimated range of 67–240 terawatt-hours (TWh), with a point estimate of 120 TWh, drawing on the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index. These are estimates, not directly metered totals, and the global figures refer to Bitcoin mining specifically rather than all cryptocurrency activity.

In a separate 2024 forecast, the EIA projected that large flexible loads in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)—a category that includes large data centers and cryptocurrency mines—would demand 54 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025, almost 60% above 2024. That figure is a forecast for the combined category, not a measure of Bitcoin mining alone.

How mining and data-center electricity demand compare

Bitcoin mining is one part of a much larger data-center and computing-power story. The EIA summarized a 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report as finding that U.S. data-center energy use could double or triple by 2028. Globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that data centers consumed about 415 TWh in 2024, or 1.5% of world electricity; the United States accounted for 45% of that consumption.

The IEA projected that the electricity generation needed for data centers would increase from 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh in 2030, with renewables meeting nearly half of the additional demand. This is a projection of data-center electricity needs, not a Bitcoin-mining forecast. The two sets of figures describe different activities and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.

What mining sites can offer AI and HPC operators

Mining facilities can offer a useful foundation for high-performance computing (HPC), but conversion depends on whether the site can meet a prospective tenant’s technical and commercial requirements. The main comparison points are:

Factor Bitcoin mining AI and other HPC workloads
Power cost and reliability Electricity cost is central to operating economics; access to a large power supply is a core site asset. Needs power capacity and reliability suited to the workload and tenant. A mining connection alone does not establish that a site meets those requirements.
Interconnection and expansion Existing grid connections and substations can support mining capacity and may be valuable to other computing users. Available capacity, interconnection terms and the ability to expand must fit the intended deployment.
Computing equipment Uses specialized ASIC miners, whose efficiency and replacement cycle affect mining operations. Requires computing systems suited to the tenant’s AI or HPC workload; mining ASICs are not a substitute for that equipment.
Cooling and site limits Mining infrastructure may include high-density cooling, including immersion systems. Cooling design must match the density and technical specifications of the equipment. Water and air constraints can affect suitability.
Ability to adjust electricity use Mining can be geographically flexible and can curtail during grid stress. AI workloads generally have tighter latency, uptime and cooling specifications, which can limit flexibility.
Customer and revenue model Revenue is tied to mining operations and their economics. A site needs a suitable AI or HPC tenant and a workable commercial arrangement; higher-value use is not guaranteed.

The practical test is not simply whether a site has abundant electricity. An operator must also assess the power’s cost and reliability, the pace and terms of interconnection and expansion, equipment requirements, cooling capacity, curtailment limits and the ability to secure a tenant. The available evidence supports the infrastructure trend, but it does not establish a universal profitability advantage for AI over Bitcoin mining.

What mining companies have reported

IREN

IREN reported securing 10.5 exahashes per second (EH/s) of Bitmain S21 XP miners in its FY2024 results. In its 2025 investor presentation, the company described a target of 650 megawatts (MW) and 50 EH/s of mining capacity at Childress, along with direct-to-chip liquid cooling intended to support up to 50 MW of HPC load. These are company-reported equipment and development details, not independent forecasts or confirmation that a particular AI tenant will use the capacity.

MARA

MARA’s 2024 Form 10-K described a strategic transformation into a vertically integrated energy and digital-infrastructure company. It also described load-management and immersion-cooling systems for data-center operators and the energy sector. That company-reported strategy illustrates why some miners are presenting themselves as infrastructure operators; it does not by itself demonstrate that every mining facility is suitable for another workload.

What a change from mining to AI would require

Turning a mining site into an AI or HPC facility is a site-specific project, not a simple swap of computers. An operator would need to evaluate whether the existing infrastructure and any planned upgrades can satisfy a tenant’s requirements, and whether the resulting economics justify the work. • Is enough power available on terms that work for the intended use, and can the site provide the reliability the tenant needs?
  • Can the grid interconnection support the required load and future expansion on a viable schedule?
  • Can the facility accommodate the tenant’s computing hardware, cooling approach and operating requirements?
  • How much flexibility to curtail electricity use does the tenant allow, particularly during grid stress?
  • Is there a committed tenant and a commercial arrangement that makes the conversion worthwhile compared with continuing mining?

If a site cannot meet a tenant’s uptime, latency or cooling requirements, its existing power connection and land may still be valuable, but they do not make the building ready for that workload. Conversion can improve asset utilization when the fit and economics work; neither the shift itself nor a better financial outcome is assured.

What this shift means for electricity customers

For household electricity customers, the growth of mining and data centers matters because large facilities add demand to power systems. The scale and effect vary by location: connection capacity, generation, transmission, local grid conditions and the timing of electricity use all matter. The EIA’s ERCOT forecast, for example, combines cryptocurrency mines with large data centers, so it cannot be used to isolate mining’s effect on that market.

Mining’s ability to curtail can help operators respond to grid stress, but that flexibility does not eliminate the underlying demand or establish how costs and benefits are distributed among customers. The figures cited here describe estimated or forecast electricity use; they do not, by themselves, show what a particular household will pay or how much a specific project will change local rates.
