Bloomberg reported on August 23, 2021, that then-Apple CEO Tim Cook and then-Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were expected to meet with President Joe Biden and other business leaders about cybersecurity. The report did not establish that either executive ultimately attended.
What the August 2021 report said
Bloomberg reported that the meeting was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon during the week of August 23, 2021. The expected participants included Cook, Nadella and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Leaders from Google, IBM, Southern Company and JPMorgan Chase were also reported to have been invited.
Attendance was described as planned or expected, based on people familiar with the event and, for Southern Company CEO Tom Fanning, an official. Several companies declined to comment. Those descriptions should not be read as a confirmed guest list.
Why the Biden administration convened the meeting
The reported purpose was to discuss how private companies and government could respond to rising ransomware and other online attacks. Bloomberg said the conversation could cover corporate cybersecurity programs, cooperation with federal agencies and ways to improve security in essential infrastructure.

Critical infrastructure
The sectors mentioned in the report included banking, energy and water. These systems depend on interconnected technology, so a disruption can affect public services and the wider economy.
Software supply-chain security
The executives were also expected to discuss how software could be used to strengthen supply-chain security. This was a prospective agenda item attributed to sources familiar with the event and a senior official, not an official agenda published by the White House.

What is—and is not—confirmed
| Point | What the report establishes |
|---|---|
| Meeting date | Planned for the week of August 23, 2021, with the report published August 23. |
| President involved | President Joe Biden. |
| Cook and Nadella | Reported as planning or expected to attend in their 2021 CEO roles. |
| Agenda | Cybersecurity, government cooperation, critical infrastructure and software supply-chain security were potential discussion topics. |
| Attendance outcome | Not confirmed in the retrieved report. |
| Meeting results | Not reported or confirmed in the retrieved report. |
Consequently, it would be inaccurate to state that Cook or Nadella definitely visited the White House, or that the meeting produced a particular agreement, based solely on this report. A later account or official record would be needed to establish those facts.
How the executives’ titles have changed
The 2021 headline used the titles held at the time. Apple says Tim Cook became the company’s executive chairman and John Ternus became CEO effective September 1, 2026; Apple also said Cook would continue engaging with policymakers in his new role. A September 2025 White House release identified Satya Nadella as Microsoft’s chairman and CEO.

That distinction matters when reading the old headline: it describes a historical plan involving the companies’ leaders in 2021, while their current titles are different for Cook and unchanged for Nadella.

Later White House appearances by technology executives can make this headline look current in search results. The August 2021 date identifies the specific event: a Biden-era policy discussion prompted by ransomware and other cyberattacks. It should not be presented as a 2026 announcement or as evidence of a current meeting.
