A DigiTimes report published October 16, 2024 described rising component activity among Apple suppliers ahead of an expected MacBook Pro refresh. It was a credible but indirect signal—not an Apple confirmation. Apple announced the M4 MacBook Pro family on October 30, 2024, opened preorders that day, and began availability on November 8, 2024. The report got the broad timing and product family right, but it did not establish exact specifications, production volumes, prices or a guaranteed launch date.
What the October 2024 supply-chain report actually said
According to DigiTimes, as summarized by MacRumors, Apple’s component suppliers were preparing for increased MacBook Pro-related shipments. The report pointed to September revenue trends at suppliers including Jarllytec and Shin Zu Shing and suggested that Apple could announce new models during October.
That evidence was indirect. Supplier revenue can reflect orders or deliveries, but it does not identify the exact MacBook Pro model mix, unit volume, regional allocation, inventory level or final customer demand. It also does not prove that finished computers were already shipping or that mass production had begun.
Which M4 MacBook Pro models were expected?
| Model | Chip | Display | Ports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry model | M4 | 14-inch | Three Thunderbolt 4 ports |
| Higher-end models | M4 Pro | 14-inch or 16-inch | Three Thunderbolt 5 ports |
| Highest-end models | M4 Max | 14-inch or 16-inch | Three Thunderbolt 5 ports |
Apple’s support documentation distinguishes the 2024 14-inch M4 model from the 14-inch and 16-inch M4 Pro and M4 Max configurations (Apple Support). The base M4 was associated with the 14-inch entry model; the larger display and more powerful chip options were not interchangeable across every market or configuration.

Why supplier evidence matters—and where it can fail
MacBook Pro launches require coordinated production of displays, hinges, keyboards, batteries, chassis parts and logic boards. A rise in component shipments can indicate a transition from engineering validation toward larger-scale production. But several factors can break the link between supplier revenue and a launch:
Rank #4
- Key Features Apple M4 10-Core Chip 16GB Unified RAM | 512GB SSD
- 14" 3024 x 1964 Liquid Retina XDR Screen 10-Core GPU | 16-Core Neural Engine
- Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) | Bluetooth 5.3 Thunderbolt 4 | HDMI | MagSafe 3
- SDXC Slot | 12MP Center Stage Camera Backlit Magic Keyboard
- Force Touch Trackpad | Touch ID Sensor macOS with Apple Intelligence
- Component shortages, low chip or board yields, or delays involving displays, cameras, batteries or enclosures.
- Apple changing regional allocations or postponing an announcement after shipments begin.
- A supplier serving multiple Apple products, making attribution uncertain.
- Revenue changes caused by shipment timing, currency movements or broader customer demand.
For that reason, supplier activity is corroboration, not a production ledger. Apple’s announcement remains the definitive source for final specifications, prices and dates.

As of August 2026, M4 MacBook Pro models are previous-generation hardware; Apple’s newer lineup uses M5 Pro and M5 Max (Apple Newsroom). The original M4 prices should therefore be used only as historical context.

When a current-generation model makes sense
Choose an M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro when you need the newest performance, the longest expected support runway or a specific high-end configuration. Current pricing and availability should be checked on Apple’s live store because the cited material does not establish a reliable 2026 price.
When an M4 can be good value
Discounted or Apple-certified refurbished M4 stock can suit ordinary productivity, coding, photo editing and moderate video work. One Apple refurbished listing showed a 14-inch M4 configuration with 24GB of memory and a 512GB SSD at $1,359 approximately three months before August 18, 2026; refurbished inventory and prices change and are not guaranteed. Apple says certified refurbished products include a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns (listing).
Which M4 tier to choose
- M4: best for mainstream work and buyers who do not need Thunderbolt 5.
- M4 Pro: better for sustained professional workloads, larger projects and Thunderbolt 5 peripherals.
- M4 Max: aimed at extensive video production, heavy 3D work and demanding local AI workloads.
Apple Trade In can provide credit toward a new Mac (Apple Trade In), although private sale may produce more money. AppleCare+ for Mac adds accidental-damage coverage, battery service coverage and 24/7 technical support; its cost should be weighed against the price of a refurbished or lower-cost machine (AppleCare+ information).
Bottom line
The October 16, 2024 supply-chain story was a credible early warning, not confirmation. Apple’s October 30 announcement validated its broad prediction about an M4 MacBook Pro family arriving that month, while the official release supplied the details that supplier revenue could not: model tiers, ports, features, prices and the November 8 availability date. In 2026, treat M4 as prior-generation hardware and compare current M5 pricing with discounted or certified-refurbished M4 stock based on your workload and budget.
